07.01.2022 Staying a little closer to home this weekend? How about a virtual tour to get you ready for the 2024 Cobb & Co Festival? The final Cobb & Co coach completed its run from Yuleba to Surat on this day (14 August) back in 1924 and to mark the occasion, we’ve launched our very first app! You can find the Cobb & Co Way app in both the Apple and Android stores (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details). We can’t whisk you back to 1924, but you can still explore the Cobb & Co Way between Yuleba and Surat any time you like. 06.01.2022 *450 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED* Seeking tried and noted riders from stations near and far... The Man from Snowy River Bush Festival 2020 is seeking volunteers of all ag...es and community groups to join us in the Upper Murray this April. Many of our locals are busy with the recovery effort so we are specifically seeking folks from outside the region to join us in the High Country and help support the community by joining our festival crew. Whether you’re an individual or part of a group or a club, if you can lend a hand at this year’s festival, come to gather to the fray and be a part of the strong-knit group that will allow this year’s celebration to happen. All are welcome. Individual volunteers can register at www.bushfestival.com.au/2020-volunteering While willing groups and clubs should contact Faith directly on 02 6076 1992. 100% of festival profits will be going straight back into the Upper Murray community and supporting the bushfire recovery. The MFSR festival is part of the lifeblood of the High Country, and it needs the support 450 volunteers each year, so please join with us in the spirit of regeneration to make this year’s festival the best yet. Let’s muster at the homestead... #victoriaisburning #australiaisburning #emptyesky #volunteer #MSFR2020 #bushfirefestival #manfromsnowyriverbushfestival #banjopaterson #rileyride #horses #corryongfires #corryongvictoria #uppermurray
06.01.2022 SURAT AQUARIUM UPGRADE COMPLETE! Celebrations were held at the Surat Cobb & Co Changing Station on Monday as Maranoa Regional Council officially opened the ref...urbished Surat Aquarium. The Aquarium received upgrades to the filtration, pumps and lighting, complete re-fibreglassing of both tanks and replacement of the front viewing windows. New structures were also introduced to the tanks to provide a number of different habitats and hiding places for the fish. The works were completed by Malcolm Shelley from oZsea and have provided an efficient and enhanced aquaculture environment, and decreased labour intensive maintenance requirements. Councillor Puddy Chandler said the upgrades will provide benefits for years to come. The filtration system has been integrated into the bottom of the aquarium tanks, which will only require maintenance every 10 years. The Surat Aquarium is managed by volunteers from the Surat Fishing & Restocking Club, so it is fantastic to be able to help reduce their workload, Cr Chandler said. Council would like to thank the Surat Fishing & Restocking Club and the Fishing volunteers for their time, support and input into the refurbishment of the aquarium. This is the first of a number of projects currently planned for the Cobb & Co Changing Station facility this financial year. Other projects include provision & installation of an aquarium generator, external painting of the facility and design of a foyer upgrade. 05.01.2022 COVID-19 - A MESSAGE TO OUR COMMUNITY FROM MARANOA REGIONAL COUNCIL Over the last days and weeks, our region, like others across the globe, has heard much abo...ut the spread of COVID-19 (or coronavirus). The COVID-19 outbreak in Australia is being managed as a health emergency, with both the Australian and Queensland Governments implementing measures as part of the pandemic response. It is clear that daily life will change in the coming weeks and months. Most certainly we need to be paying close attention to the advice and updates that are being provided by the lead health agencies. As our region’s local government, we also want to be doing our part at a local level to support our community during this time. All Councillors and our management team have worked together to identify ways that we can support our community, with a particular focus on those areas that Council can influence. Our ten point action plan recognises that we are a major provider of services, many of which our residents rely solely on us to provide. As a major employer within the region, we also need to look after the health and wellbeing of our workers, volunteers and business partners. The steps that Council will take in this first COVID-19 support package include the following: 1. Council events Any Council events that were on the imminent horizon will not proceed as scheduled. Events such as Harmony Week, the Mitchell Tryathlon and Volunteers Week may be held at a later date. In relation to community events, we have been advised that the Easter in the Country festival and Roma and Mitchell Shows have been cancelled. We anticipate receiving an update about the Wallumbilla Show in the near future. 2. Tourism facilities and our volunteers We will temporarily discontinue, until further notice, the rostering of volunteers at all Council facilities, so that they are not at risk of exposure to the virus from the travelling public. We value the contribution our volunteers make to our region, so we hope that it won’t be too long before we can return to normal operations and welcome them back safely. There will, as a result, be changes to the hours of operation of our tourism facilities, with the Surat Visitor Information Centre closing on Sunday, and Injune Visitor Information Centre closing on Saturday and Sunday. The Roma Saleyards tours and Big Rig miniature train will be temporarily discontinued and the Interpretive Centre will close until further notice. We will continue to monitor tourism services in terms of the current use and potentially review other operating times. Additional signage and precautions will be taken at all tourism facilities. 3. Cleaning of Council facilities Cleaning arrangements for Council-owned facilities will be reviewed in accordance with the recommendations and guidelines released from the Australian and Queensland Governments. This will include customer service and public access areas. 4. Taking care of our workforce Mindful that Council is a provider of essential services, we are committed to business continuity. Our key message to our team members is to be alert to the risks but not alarmed. As much as possible we want to provide services as normal, while doing our part to reduce the risk of transmission of the virus within the Maranoa community. We are ensuring that the appropriate support is in place for our employees. This includes mandatory isolation periods for any team members returning from international travel, health and safety information and leave arrangements if unwell including for casual workers. In our own workforce, we are cancelling any visiting professionals and non-urgent meetings with those from outside the region. Similarly, there will be a temporary suspension of employee work related travel outside the region. 5. Saleyards visitations reduced We are encouraging non-essential visitors to not attend the Saleyards. 6. Rates discount extended To assist the community, the rates discount period has been extended from Friday, 3 April 2020 to Tuesday, 5 May 2020. This is in recognition that the original rates payment and discount period has coincided with this time of uncertainty. 7. Debt recovery on hold We will pause debt recovery for all outstanding Council rates and charges (including gas) through to 5 May 2020. Council continues to offer payment arrangements and encourages contact with us if these need to be varied. 8. Hire fee refunds for Council facility bookings Any fees and charges already paid for the forward booking of Council facilities during the months of March, April and May will be refunded where the organisers elect to cancel events to avoid the risk of mass gatherings. 9. Payment terms reduced until May To assist businesses with cashflow during this period, we will make approved payments to suppliers of goods and services on a fortnightly basis, where possible, until the end of May. 10. Continued involvement in the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) We will continue to participate in the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG), which includes briefings from Queensland Health on the COVID-19 outbreak in Australia and the local coordinated response. In closing, given that this is an unprecedented situation worldwide and more information is becoming available daily, we will continue to monitor the latest advice and adapt our operations as needed. We recognise that we are not experts in the field of health. Therefore we will follow the advice provided by our local Queensland Health professionals who are coordinating the information and resources our communities need to manage the risk appropriately. If we receive information on COVID-19 which is of importance to our community we will also share that through our communication networks (including Council’s website).
