25.01.2022 Something to look forward to this Saturday... #whiteasparagus Cloud Produce... Remember to peel white asparagus and remove all the tough skin before cooking. This should make the cooked spears super tender and even a little melt-in-the-mouth-y.

25.01.2022 A big beautiful week for #CoburgFM this Saturday. See you from 8am-1pm

25.01.2022 #CoburgFM is full to the brim with fresh Victorian produce! See you Saturday

25.01.2022 Have you bottled your passata for the season yet? All around Coburg, garages + kitchens have been filled with the sounds and smells of this time honoured tradition - and you don't need to have a Nonna to get in on it! This weekend we welcome Kennedy Farm Produce back to #CoburgFM, with their famous boxes of saucing tomatoes. You can pre-order via their FB page, or simply come on the day. $20 will get you a 10kg box of their finest. Where to start? We've found these simple step-by-step instructions to get you started: https://www.recipesfromitaly.com/tomato-passata-recipe/ #nonna #italiantraditions #familyrecipes #coburgfm #melbournefarmersmarkets #vfma #mfm #eatseasonal #tomatoes #passatarecipe

23.01.2022 Are you ready to do your weekly shop at #CoburgFM? Here's the stallholders to expect to help write your list! See you Saturday

23.01.2022 This snap is of Fiona after she had baked her first loaf using her own recipe and flour that she had milled herself. Three years on, and she's having her first ever stall at a farmers market. And that lucky market is us! Fiona will have a range of loaves available tomorrow including: country, fruit & nut, seeded, rye and beer porridge, olive, and spelt. She'll be up all night baking so may not be her best self tomorrow but her mum and dad will be on hand to help ... Welcome Fiona. Coffee's on us.

23.01.2022 Looking for something to do with the kids? Supplement your weekly market haul with the free superfoods growing in your backyard. Melbourne locals Adam Grubb and Annie Raser-Rowland's The Weed Forager's Handbook is a great resource for identifying weeds of the edible or medicinal variety. They also have some great recipe ideas including Weedy Frittata, Nettle Gnocchi and Moroccan Mallow Stew...... And to prove we practice what we preach here at MFM, here's evidence of my first attempt at gorse flower cordial. We always say with seasonal cooking, you've got to use what's on hand ... 22.01.2022 Look out for new season mulberries from John Howell and The Orange Lady this Saturday, as well as zucchini flowers from Oz Fresh Herbs and Specialty Produce. Have you tried garlic shoots yet? A perfect combo between onion and garlic, we've been using shoots in pesto, as a base for chilli mussels, and in garlic bread and scrambled eggs. Chat to Paul and his crew from Day's Walk Farm for more recipe ideas.

22.01.2022 MASKS STILL MANDATORY AT FARMERS' MARKETS

21.01.2022 Updated 29 Sep YES! Farmers markets are an essential food service under current restrictions, and Melbourne Farmers Markets (MFM) are operating where we can. Remember, we are an essential food service (not a place to gather or socialise) and all DHHS recommended actions while shopping should be followed including; respecting customer limits, wearing a fitted mask (unless you have a lawful reason for not doing so), shopping within 5kms of home, and not attending if you're awai...ting COVID test results. Make sure you're across our safety precautions below and rest assured we’re experienced in the management of these, having continually traded throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. We have limits on the number of customers allowed on site at any one time, have implemented strict precautions, increased staff, and altered market layouts and flow. We are confident that the open-air environment of our farmers markets, together with the below precautions and operational adjustments, means our markets provide some of the safest shopping options to you. If you’re feeling sick, stay at home. Practice good hand hygiene. Hand sanitiser is available at the front gate Come to shop, not brunch. Hot food is available for take-away only and must be consumed off-site. Limit your time at market. Make a list of things you need so you can shop quickly and minimise your time out of the house. Leave the team at home: Where possible, only one person per household please. Bring your card: MFM gate donations are by tap and go and there are no ATMs on site. Some stallholders will accept cash, but card transactions are preferred. Go to the toilet before leaving home: Toilets will only be made available to the public in emergency situations (yes, a desperate child does count as an emergency but we ask, where possible, to leave the kids at home). Do not touch the produce. Adhere to social distancing. We also have a contactless pick-up available from Alphington every Sunday. For more information, join our Melbourne Farmers Marketplace group. 20.01.2022 Be like Miranda, listen to Dan! The rules around masks just got tighter (see what I did there..), so make sure you’ve got a fitted mask if you’re coming to #CoburgFM tomorrow. While the one shopper per household rule has been lifted, we still want to encourage shoppers to leave the team at home as the limits on how many people are permitted on-site still apply. From this weekend, stallholders are again permitted to accept cash however card transactions are still preferred, MF...M's gate donations will remain tap and go, and ATMs will not be provided. MFM Founder Miranda modelling a very appropriate mask given to her by our friends at CERES Environment Park last weekend, in front of lots of beautiful Oz Fresh Herbs and Specialty Produce blooms.

20.01.2022 Goodbye 2020! We're taking a bit of a break over summer, and we hope you are going to get a little rest and relaxation too. We’ll be back on deck on the 9th of January. 20.01.2022 Curiously Cauli's origin story lies in founder Bianca becoming a type 1 diabetic at a very young age. Forced to find healthier alternatives to highly processed foods, she found the cauliflower to be excellent for diabetes control, as well as exceptionally rich in immune-boosting antioxidants. Fast forward a few years and she has a dip & cracker range with the humble cauli at its centre. (They're whole roast caulis got both thumbs up from the #CarltonFM team too). Find Bianca at #CoburgFM tomorrow.

14.01.2022 Did you spot these cute baby caulis from Oz Fresh on Sat? My Coburg veggie patch just offered up 5 large heads of cauli so I've got my work cut out finding different ways to eat them. Lunch today was this simple cauli soup. I couldn't understand how it had so many excellent reviews considering it's so basic, but it's 5 stars from me too (sorry, I only thought to take a pic when lunch was over- but empty bowls aren't a bad indication of its deliciousness!)... CREAMY ROASTED CAULIFLOWER SOUP https://cookieandkate.com/creamy-roasted-cauliflower-soup-/ 1. Preheat oven to 220. Cut 1 large head of cauliflower into small florets, toss with 2 tablespoons of olive oil until lightly and evenly coated. Arrange in a single layer and sprinkle lightly with salt. Bake until the cauliflower is tender and caramelized on the edges, 25 to 35 minutes, tossing halfway. 2. Once the cauliflower is almost done, in a Dutch oven or soup pot, warm 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat until shimmering. Add 1 red onion and teaspoon salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is softened and turning translucent, 5 to 7 minutes. 3. Add 2 cloves of garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 30 seconds, then add 1L of veg stock. 4. Reserve 4 of the prettiest roasted cauliflower florets for garnish. Then transfer the remaining cauliflower to the pot. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat as necessary to maintain a gentle simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes, to give the flavors time to meld. 5. Once the soup is done cooking, remove the pot from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Blend. 6.Add 2Tbsp butter, 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice and 1/4 tsp nutmeg and blend again. Add additional salt, to taste 7. Top individual bowls with 1 roasted cauliflower floret and a sprinkle of chopped parsley, green onion and/or chives. If you're not growing your own, Oz Fresh Herbs and Specialty Produce, Day's Walk Farm, Peninsula-Fresh Organics and Thriving Foods Farm will all have plenty of caulis available this Sat.

We use it on scrambled eggs, mixed through rice noodles, served with crackers.... #vegan #pesto #coriander #cilantro #melbournefarmersmarkets #coburgfm #coburgfarmersmarkets #obsessed

12.01.2022 IMPORTANT MARKET UPDATE We’re trialing a change to the layout this Saturday at #CoburgFM to assist with market flow and make it easy to grab your coffee as you leave. 11.01.2022 A REFLECTION ON THE YEAR THAT WAS From Melbourne Farmers Markets Managing Director, Miranda Sharp We are hauling ourselves to the finishing line of 2020 after an extremely challenging year of work, achievement, exhaustion, grief and reward. We recognise it’s been a mix of all this for so many of us and that, in fact, our team has been fortunate in many ways. I keep repeating that we have much to be thankful for.... Since the first lockdown in March to the end of November we have run over 100 markets days, with an average of 35 stallholders trading and managed almost 50,000 people to safely attend and comply with our COVID safety requirements. Our estimate generated for the local food economy in this time is almost $4million. Our figures are around a third of a ‘normal’ year but we are very proud of this achievement, the resilience to cope with the dynamic environment week in week out, and the determination to persist even in the face of closure by the government. The dedication, strength and goodwill shown by MFM Staff has been extraordinary, and we all owe them a round of thanks for hanging in and making it work. It could have been so different, as was experienced by so many of our hospitality mates and so many Victorian producers told us so because so many other outlets for their produce, at the height of their season disappeared overnight. Yet again today, one of our stallholders delivered us gifts with a note Thank you for keeping on, keeping on. It’s been their gratitude and the feedback that we have been a value to communities doing their weekly shop with new-found appreciation and the bonus of real, live human connection that’s made it all worthwhile. We hope that what we’ve all learnt this year about ourselves, and what’s important, carries forward into the new year. Now is the time to embrace some changes for the better. I hope that our layers of Government have seen the community strength and value and, as individuals, that we have realised that the simple things can give enormous pleasure. For all our sophistication in a technological online world, really, all we want to do is to be together. I wish you a delicious, relaxing, uneventful summer and a healthy 2021. Thanks to all for your support of Melbourne Farmers Markets. (2020 has been a year of working with what we’ve got and Miranda’s Christmas tree reflects that this festive season )

07.01.2022 Hey Coburg, see you Saturday!

06.01.2022 Have you been wondering where your gate donations go? It's no exaggeration to say that your donation at our market gate is keeping Melbourne Farmers Markets (MFM) afloat through COVID19. Our market day costs have doubled and with only four of our seven market sites still open for trading, it's hardly been an easy time for our community - or anyone’s balance sheet! Beyond MFM, our market hosts and partners also benefit from your donations. Last year we sent almost $26,000 to ...Coburg Primary School. This money was used for important school upgrades including new bike racks, electronic car park gates, air-con in their music room, and an asbestos audit. This is especially vital for the School this year as fundraising opportunities diminish. Donations are voluntary and we know there's a lot of people doing it tough out there who genuinely can't spare the $1 or 2. If you're in this boat, know you're very welcome at the market and we salute you for choosing to spend your money locally. But for those who can, please tap away knowing you're not only keeping us afloat, but the 100 or so small-scale Victorian farmers and producers we connect with their customers each week. The potential threat of being shut down illuminated the vital lifeline we provide for farmers and producers - and how many of them would have been forced to close if we were. Thanks to our community for your ongoing support, we look forward to seeing your friendly faces at the gate this morning.

02.01.2022 Not too long now!

01.01.2022 We would love to see markets return to pre-COVID times as much as the next person, but the reality is we are now operating in a very different world, and rules, and we need to remain vigilant to stay safe, and permitted to trade. Last Saturday, a staff member at #CoburgFM, in enforcing the Victorian Government ruling on takeaways only, had a coffee thrown at them in frustration for being asked to consume their coffee and pastry off-site. We are permitted to trade only becaus...e we are an essential food service. This simply means that we’re a place to do your weekly groceries, not a place to gather and socialise. We all saw how last month a single photo of a handful of customers doing the wrong thing at an unaccredited market almost shut all farmers markets down overnight. We need to stick to the rules; for us, for the 100+ small-scale farmers and producers who rely on us to trade, and for you - lovers of fresh seasonal food. It’s important to note that a few bad eggs are overwhelmingly outweighed by everyone who does do the right thing on the weekend, which we are grateful for. And it's unlikely that anyone reading this would behave in that way but you can help us by role modelling COVID safe shopping behaviour. Although some of the rules have relaxed in the last couple of weeks, we still require the following for safe markets: - Efficient shopping: with strict crowd capacities in place at all our sites, we encourage you to be quick shoppers. This means everyone gets a chance to spend with their favourite Victorian producers. - Grab your coffee as you leave: Please grab your coffee on your way out of the market to avoid wandering the market with your mask down, and to lessen the temptation to tuck into that croissant too (as all food must be consumed off-site). - Leave the team at home (if you can) - Put yourselves in our shoes, and be kind. We are trying as hard as we can! 2020 has been tough on us all.

01.01.2022 Have you tried La Villa Salumi's maple bacon yet? A sweeter Canadian-style bacon, slow cured with maple syrup and brown sugar, then double smoked in-house - it is ridiculously good. Add it to your shopping list this Saturday, and every 3rd Saturday of the month hereafter!

01.01.2022 Last Saturday, we saw the first of the zucchinis from Oz Fresh Herbs and Specialty Produce, plus spring beetroot, walking onions, red mizuna, and a plethora of green garlic and garlic scapes from Day's Walk Farm. Walking onions, you ask?? Yep, these tall onions grow bulbs on the TOP of their stalks too. At the end of the season they fall over and set root to start a new plant. Over several seasons they 'walk' across your garden growing, falling, and re-planting themselves. We also welcomed tasters and samples back to our markets, yum yum!
