03.01.2022 Visited Everard Oldfield (90 yo) this morning in George Forbes House Qbn. He’s in good health and bright as a button with photos of memories around the wall. Sense of humour alive and well telling me he had a couple of clean shirts left in him yet . Yearns for the mountains . What a wonderful old Mate.
02.01.2022 A few words from Andy Irvine who rode with us last weekend... Desi The making of a cowboy Before I start this story, there’s something I need to confess.... My past experience of horses has never been the best Moments from my childhood had given me a fear Something to be overcome as my new love holds horses dear Phone calls to Bec and Peter at Cochrans, deposits and confirmation We set off from Northern NSW, hiding my growing trepidation The check in at the Snow Goose to meet fellow riders and the legend we now know as Pete Out to base camp for planning and safety briefings and our first Michelle gourmet treat Morning brought more safety, saddles, bridles and loading the gear It was time to meet our horses and for me to face my fear What was I doing, why did I agree to this crazy 50th birthday presy Then there he was, my new Palomino mate, who went by the name of Desi As I fumbled, bumbled, bounced and tested the patience of our guides Desi, ever calm and rock steady, never missing a step, up and down steep mountain sides Dad jokes, riding tips and help from young Jamie, Kev and Pete I couldn’t believe how my riding was improving to Desi’s steady beat The country was incredible, lush and green with mountain streams contrasting the devastation of the fires First night at Old Snowy Camp, hot shower and comfy swags, bad jokes, great food and sitting around the fire New friendships forged, pasts shared as the laughs and stories got taller and taller The deepest sleep in a long time, fear a distant memory kept getting smaller and smaller Bridle upside down, halter ropes, stirrups, blankets, girths and saddles Desi nudging for a forehead scratch and checking my pockets for apples Day 2, seat belts on and we canter across the plain Mobs of brumbies, mountain flowers, seat belts on, Desi’s off, making me look good again!! Kev’s jokes, Jamie’s knobbly knees and hot showers wash away the dirt Round the fire another Michelle gourmet feast and laughing til it hurt Peter’s love of this mountain country, his knowledge and care for horses is something I admire A great team well led, endlessly kind and patient is something to inspire 3 days in I’m trotting, cantering and riding like I would never have believed Sharing apples and carrots with my new best mate, my fear of horses forever relieved We have loved every minute of this and a new love much stronger We will be back, we will bring our kids and friends and wishing the trip was longer.
