25.01.2022 There's something special about Lake Coogee - it's salty! This naturally saline lake was skirted by a sweet bunch in yesterday morning's #GetWildAboutWetlands walk and talk program. We discovered its natural beauty, learnt about its unique features, its flora and fauna and made a wonderful morning of it! Here are some glimpses.

24.01.2022 How do you reckon that's looking??!! We're getting closer to the finish! The New Wetlands Precinct is truly very promising for our community... and it's exciting too. Thanks for the update, City of Cockburn!

23.01.2022 In the wake of devastating bushfires on Kangaroo Island, we've teamed up to help some of the affected little creatures - Our microbats. This morning a team of volunteers lead by Joe Tonga of Go Batty (gobatty.com.au) is assembling 56 Bat Boxes that will be shipped to the island and will hopefully shelter our little homeless survivors.

22.01.2022 Down at the Bibra Lake Turtle site planting lots of Baumeas today. Message us if your interested in joining our Volunteer team today #wildaboutwetlands

22.01.2022 It's action time for turtle conservation! With the nesting season about to begin, our endangered native southwestern snake-necked turtles once again need your crucial support. We're starting this year's "TURTLE TRACKERS" volunteer program with the City of Cockburn and in partnership with Murdoch University, DBCA and Parks and Wildlife Service, Western Australia From this September up to January 2021, you can walk the fringes of Bibra Lake providing much-needed observation, su...pport, nest-protection, and research activities which will hopefully save scores of our mumma and baby turtles. If you would like to be a part of these conservation efforts, please register your interest by contacting 9411 3444 or email [email protected]. Training will take place from 6pm until 7pm on Thursday 27th August at The Wetlands Centre Cockburn. And please, do keep an eye out for these precious creatures while driving around our lakes.

22.01.2022 Today is #WorldEnvironmentDay. Due to the recent crisis and ongoing restrictions, our planting day had to be cancelled this year. But let's not forget nature! Everything we're experiencing seems to reiterate one thing - we need to step up and take action across the world to combat the fast accelerating loss of species and the natural world: We may be apart, but our voices will join as one. Its time to appreciate the benefits that nature provides. Its time to take action t...o protect & restore our natural world. Its time #ForNature See more

21.01.2022 Things are starting to look upbeat, even more so for our New Wetlands Precinct. We're beginning to see the dream we envisioned come together as a big maze of trusses and frames. A shout-out to those who've been instrumental in crafting this vision - City of Cockburn and Site Architecture Studio with whom we've spent untiring hours poring over the big and minute designs and details. And now it's all taking shape! Have a glimpse!

20.01.2022 This beautiful morning we're at the "Wetlands Weekender" organised by Peel-Harvey Catchment Council! Want to find out what lives inside our seemingly placid lakes? Come on in, our macros are waiting https://fb.me/e/214BcD1eS

20.01.2022 A big shout out to the City of Cockburn Crew who helped out today !!! This bunch of legends helped us relocate over 10,000 plants and 32 nursery tables. With a heavy heart, we now bid adieu to our existing nursery, soon to be demolished. But all's great, as this now makes way for our brand new nursery which is being established under the direction of Greenlife Industry Australia - GIA. Watch this space!!

20.01.2022 Would you notice a black 50-cent coin on a busy road? That's what these little turtle babies look like, and crossing the road to get to their freshwater home is one of the biggest risks they might face right after hatching! So, slow down and stay alert when you're driving around our lakes, and do lend a hand ferrying these babies across and towards the water when you can safely do so!

19.01.2022 This morning, on the banks of the beautiful Lake Monger, the 2020 WA Wetlands Management Conference has begun. Being held at the magnificent Bendat Parent & Community Centre for the first time, this 16th annual conference is one of our biggest yet, with over 200 attendees. Every World Wetlands Day since 2005, The Wetlands Centre has brought together the country's biggest and brightest minds in Wetlands Management and Conservation under one roof, to learn & share our experiences, meet old friends & new, exchange ideas & insights and celebrate our successes. We're beginning by acknowledging country, with Nyungar elder Marie Taylor leading us.

18.01.2022 A lot of people consider climate change the most important crisis that the world is facing today. But what is it? And why are so many scientists, campaigners and politicians concerned about its effects? This is a free public talk to help the community understand a complicated issue - but a very important one. Members of Extinction Rebellion WA will share the latest climate science and offer solutions based on the study of social movements.

17.01.2022 Our Aussie fauna make some beautiful Easter icons too! Here's wishing you and your family a happy and safe Easter. May this day bring along health, positivity and joy.

09.01.2022 Today is World Environmental Education Day! For 25 years, The Wetlands Centre used to be known as "The Cockburn Wetlands Education Centre" and one of our primary objectives has always been to educate the community about our precious wetlands, an endeavour we will continue to deliver on. 08.01.2022 Amid the coronavirus global lockdown, some unbelievable scenes have emerged: from swans and dolphins gliding through the now-clear waterways of Italy to clear blue skies over India and China where the air is usually choked with smog. Nature has emerged from under the heavy burden of human activity and bloomed. And we are thankful for nature and for the respite we were able to offer it. We're sure that our Wetlands too, here in Perth, are worthy of some gratitude, having worked untiringly to uphold the health of the environment. If you want to rekindle and nurture your love for the Wetlands while you have a little time on your hands, we have the perfect excuses! Do read our latest blog!

08.01.2022 The Get Wild About Wetlands School Holiday Program for April 2020 has been cancelled by the City of Cockburn and The Wetlands Centre Cockburn following government recommendations in view of the coronavirus outbreak. Our top priority is the health and safety of our staff, guests, volunteers, and, of course, our dear little children. Let's all do what we can to help reduce the risk of contacting COVID-19.

07.01.2022 Great news! The North Lake Reserve in the Beeliar Wetlands is now classified as an A-class nature reserve which greatly increases its protection and means building a road through it much more difficult! We want to take a moment to remember everybody- from those who've lent their voices and time to those who have give a big part of their lives towards working to defend and conserve these precious wetlands. We're grateful to the McGowan Government for this crucial and decisive step in recognising and protecting these fragile ecosystems. A win for nature is a win for everyone!

Heartfelt congratulations to all the recipients and nominees.

04.01.2022 WATCH OUT FOR TURTLES!

03.01.2022 COVID-19 has brought us unprecedented challenges. Crises have a way of unveiling truths, flaws and misconceptions in any society. And one unique truth that this event is revealing is our relationship with the other species that share our planet. Under lockdowns around the world, animals emerged from the cover of their natural habitats and entered cities and streets. While society adapted to a new normal, nature proved that it is unfailing, continuing to provide us with critical services. Especially our wetlands - not a day's break, working to keep our environment healthy and improving! It's time we commit to nurturing our love for nature again! Our next blog will tell you how!
