22.01.2022 SAFE SLEEPING WEEK 2018: SLEEP BABY ON BACK: Welcome to the first day of Red Nose’s Safe Sleeping Week, a week dedicated to spreading our messages to parents an...d carers about how to sleep baby safely. Today’s Safe Sleeping topic is Sleep Baby on Back, which is one of six recommendations for sleeping baby safely Always place a baby on their back to sleep from birth on a firm, flat surface. Babies protect their airway through arousal and swallowing. These protective airway mechanisms are influenced by sleep position, and work best when baby is placed to sleep on their back. Although many parents and carers report that infants appear to sleep more deeply and for longer when they are on their tummy, this is due to reduced arousal responses which also results in the baby being less able to protect their airway and increases the risk of SUDI. Sleeping an infant on their tummy may also increase the risk of overheating. Infants are more vulnerable to heat stress and this is associated with an increased risk of SUDI. As baby grows beyond 5-6 months they will move around the cot and roll over; settle baby to sleep on their back but let them find the sleep position they feel most comfortable in.
