24.01.2022 We are pleased to present to you our newest mentor, Surya Setiyaputra. Surya is a full-stack software developer with more than three-year professional experience with a previous life as a research scientist in Biophysics. He is a self-described ‘generalist’ with practical experience in setting up small businesses, personal finance, design, community building and tech startup in both Australia and Indonesia. Since mid-2019, Surya has been an active contributor to Free Code Cam...p Sydney meetups. As a self-taught developer, he is particularly interested in helping new coders who are interested in landing their entry role as a Junior Developer after going through the FreeCodeCamp full-stack curriculum. His current favourite web development stacks are Kotlin/Spring Boot, Ruby on Rails, Node, ReactJS and VueJS. In the near future, he aims to learn more SQL and functional programming. When he is not coding, Surya likes to read books about economics, anthropology, history and politics. #freecodecamp #sydneyvolunteerprogrammers

24.01.2022 Basic technological penetration can be as effective as applying cutting-edge technology, particularly when applied to social enterprises. Ling-Pei Lin reached out to Code.Sydney to share her observation from a couple of non-profits in Sydney who are helping those who are on the brink of homelessness. Apparently, back-office staff manually copy search results that satisfy the criteria for temporary accommodation from domain.com.au. Everyone knows that there is a better way. One of our mentors, Kevin Foong consumed domain.com.au APIs and delivered a realtime rental properties search app with export capability. We are hoping that this will free up those back-office staff of their manual work and focus their time on more important matters instead. Thank you Ling-Pei and Kevin for this great work. http://www.propertyextractor.com.au/

15.01.2022 As we celebrate our 4th-year anniversary post-lockdown, we discussed recalibrating our approach to get higher chances of success in getting into coding just in time when the economy reopens. Many thanks to our ever-supportive and capable Code.Sydney mentors namely Tony Johnson, Qj Stout-Spykers, Surya Setiyaputra, Kevin Foong, Engramar Bollas, and not in the photo are Promie Yutasane, Bin Liu and June Kongyang. Code.Sydney’s purpose and intention remain the same since the time of inception. We are here to serve people and help get their foot in the door of the IT industry.

14.01.2022 We are pleased to welcome our newest mentor, Qj Stout-Spykers. Qj will be heading our Data Structures and Algorithms Centre of Excellence. Qj is a computer science graduate and achieved high distinctions in microprocessor systems, systems and database design, discrete mathematics and programming principles. His primary software development experience is in embedded systems, deep-learning and back-end engineering. Currently, he is constraining his focus to mastering full-stack... web development, after which, he has his eye on studying project management. As a Code.Sydney volunteer, Qj has acted as a technical team lead and principal back-end engineer on the Code.Sydney website rework and internal 'Strataly’ project respectively. Qj can usually be found deep in some obscure documentation or sharing his knowledge on the Code.Sydney Slack. In his past life, Qj was a professional musician and guitar tutor.

12.01.2022 Meetup.com has been instrumental in the growth of our coding community. Sydney’s meetup.com ecosystem is vibrant and full of activities Pre-COVID. We are looking forward to the time when we can all sip coffee together and do some coding on Sunday mornings again. Meanwhile, we just realised that we are already at 2nd spot in terms of the number of members among all volunteering groups in Australia. It also appears that we are now on top of the leaderboard in tech volunteering. Congratulations to the entire Code.Sydney community! Your intention to assist those who need some guidance around the art and science of coding is highly appreciated. Cheers! https://www.meetup.com/topics/volunteering/au/

02.01.2022 Over the weekend, our team from Code.Sydney had our very first online hackathon experience. Thanks, Blair Hudson of 'Stay Home Hack' for organising a totally remote hackathon to tackle recent issues we are all experiencing right now. Our team built a working prototype called ZONED, an app that can potentially provide more granular data insights to the local neighbourhood. Special thanks to the following people who gave up their weekend for this good cause:... - Gabriel Tan Wui Djan for working on the design - Aleix Cubel for researching relevant datasets online - Leslie Parwada and Girard Andrew Tabañag for working on the presentation - Engramar Bollas for developing the prototype Check out our live presentation using this link https://www.twitch.tv/videos/583758152?t=02h29m16s Here is the link to the initial prototype https://zoned.pythonanywhere.com/
