25.01.2022 Good morning everyone. I will be unavailable today as I will be in conference with my solicitor to discuss the bullying situation at my sons school. Apologies for any inconvenience

24.01.2022 This video not only announces my return to work, but showcases a defect that has been present in this Asus K53SC model laptop from factory. In this video, you will see the factory solder, still covered in lacquer, for the pin that provides power to the CPU fan, which was not connected to the motherboard, at all. Luckily Intel have always had a decent go at thermal throttling, so this laptop was persistent about running, albeit attrociously slow. Because its fan was not even ...Continue reading

22.01.2022 Good morning followers. Just a quick one this morning, our gaming prodigy is currently streaming from his new rig. If you're into games like Fortnite, check out his live stream below: https://youtu.be/H17K-q4Mmxc

21.01.2022 Repairing a common issue in an Asus laptop. In this situation, time and stress have caused the centre pin for the DC-in socket to disconnect from the socket itself. Preventing power from reaching the computers motherboard, which in turn prevents the machine from charging, or turning on when the battery is depleted. Here is the process for removing the original, defective DC-in socket, followed by replacement with a newer, upgraded socket. You will note the centre pin on the ...new socket has a larger contact area with the socket itself, which will, in theory, help prevent this from happening again. Defects can sometimes take years of use to manifest. This machine is from 2015 and the DC-in socket has only recently broken down. $15 for the replacement socket $50 for an hours labour to disassemble, repair and reassemble Total price for this repair $65 and this 4 year old machine has a new lease on life.

21.01.2022 Attention Microsoft Windows PC Users The May 2019 update for your Microsoft Windows 10 PC rollout has begun! 20.01.2022 Owing to an alarming number of calls and messages, well outside my advertised business hours, I will now be introducing an after-hours rate of $100 per hour for technical support. This is something I've been dealing with for quite some time now. People seem to either completely ignore my advertised business hours, or simply don't care and think that other human beings don't have a life as important as their own and will call me as early as 5am or as late as midnight and this ...has to stop. I am only human, I have a family and I really would like to spend some time with them. I also enjoy sleeping, which is seemingly not on the cards as I am constantly being woken by phone calls, text messages and Facebook messages. Just like any other business, I have well advertised business hours and all I have ever (repeatedly) asked is that these hours are adhered to. Yet my one request has been constantly denied. I work very hard throughout the week, often working 12-16 hours at a time, with no break. I have advertised business hours which are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. I have 5 children whom I don't get to see much throughout the week due to work and have not been able to have a single weekend to myself in quite a few years. Most businesses do not answer their phones or instant messengers before 9am, nor do they do so after 5pm. But for some reason, I am inundated with calls, messages, etc well outside my business hours and it is starting to have an impact on my personal life. This is entirely regardless of the fact that outside business hours, I employ an answering service which explains my business hours, that it's not a typical answering machine and recorded messages will not be heard. Despite the plain, written word, despite voice prompts, despite me personally explaining what my business hours are, people have been ignoring these warnings and proceeding to attempt to contact me and disrupt my private life, as if my private life doesn't exist, or isn't as important as their own. As of today, Saturday 30th March, 2019, anyone who requires technical support outside of my advertised business hours, will be charged at $100 per hour, with no cap. If I am working on your device throughout the week and you insist I work on it throughout my weekend, I will do so, but any work performed over the weekend will incur the new hourly rate, there and above what would have been incurred throughout the week.

20.01.2022 Just wanted to say thanks to all those who donated last week. On Sunday, we delivered and installed a whole computer, meaning a mum can now study, the kids have some access to streaming media and no one's waiting half an hour for an ageing laptop to boot up. Special thanks to:... The Minto's, for the case with built-in wireless networking The Gladmans, for the power supply Danny at Megatronics/Jaycar Nambour, for sponsoring a keyboard, mouse, USB hub and USB extension lead I have another whole PC just about ready to go for another donation, now we just have to work out who needs it the most. So if anyone would like to nominate someone who's facing financial hardship and needs a desktop PC, monitor, etc, please send a message and we can have a chat.

19.01.2022 If you're in or around any of the storms that are hitting at the moment, you might want to shut down and unplug your computers and devices. That includes TV aerials and phone lines.

If anyone has any old keyboards, mice, or reasonable graphics cards handy, they'd be greatly appreciated. If you can help, please feel free to send a message. 15.01.2022 Good morning all. It would appear flu season is definitely upon us and I have been no exception. Needless to say, I'm not feeling 100%. As such, I will be operating this week at a very limited capacity. I will not be doing on-site work and will only be in the workshop, actively working when I feel up to it.... Pickup/Dropoff will still be available, but please bare with me while I sweat out this darn bug. Cheers, Alistair

11.01.2022 Two things Lenovo have always done right. 1. Durability 2. Reliability But then again, subjecting your line of devices to Military spec testing before release will usually yield a durable, reliable product.... This T520 from 2011 came in with little more than a blank screen at power on. Following an internal clean, new RAM (memory) was installed which repaired the system. 4Gb DDR3 RAM by Kingston, brand new with 12 month warranty: $45 Plus an hours labour at $50 Total cost to the customer to restore this old, yet reliable and powerful i7 powered Lenovo T520 to its fully functional glory: $95 at CoDex I.T

11.01.2022 How could I possibly let this brand new Gigabyte Aorus RTX 2060 Extreme gaming graphics card go for less than $650, with a four year warranty, including installation? Maybe you should send a message and ask how ;)

10.01.2022 It's all about the dimensions baby.... Now THERE's a reference almost no one will get haha With the correct dimensions, a little engineering and maybe some thread cutting, you can create almost anything on a 3D printer. Including, parts for your own 3D printer! This here is a temporary stand-in for a flexible coupler, which joins the 5mm output shaft of a stepper motor, with one of the 8mm lead screws on my printers Z-Axis. The finished product includes two embedded nuts to r...etain the two bolts, which have been shortened and are being used as grub screws. This is a prototype, a test-piece, which will allow me to see if introducing rigidity and removing some tolerance, can yield higher quality prints, or if that tolerance is required for a little "slop". Sometimes, something isn't perfect, unless there's a little something wrong with it ;)

10.01.2022 After the customer connected power with reverse polarity, both the voltage regulator and a small fuse were completely destroyed. CoDex I.T replaced both damaged components and brought the monitor back to life. Labour $75 Parts $5.37 Total price for this repair $80.37... Solder, desoldring wick, soldering irons, all from Megatronics / Jaycar in Nambour (Thanks Danny). Voltage Regulator and replacement fuse overnight from RS-Online

10.01.2022 This desktop PC came in presenting S.M.A.R.T errors on startup and warning its internal storage drive was failing. CoDex I.T found the faulty drive was a disused, non-essential, conventional hard drive. The hard drive was removed which resolved the warning messages on boot. The customers main internal storage was full and close to failure as well, so we cloned that onto a brand new Kingston 240Gb SSD, in less than 2 hours.... Kingston 240Gb SSD upgrade deal $150 Total price to the customer for this same day service - $150

10.01.2022 Good afternoon everyone I'm working with CAYAC this week to get four, donated laptops ready for school students. All we need to do at this stage is upgrade them all to 5GHz WiFi. It will cost $34 each to install replacement WiFi cards and have them ready for the schools requirements.... If anyone would like to make a donation to help cover the cost of one or more of these upgrades, please send a message and we'll get them sorted. Cheers, Alistair

07.01.2022 Well that didn't last long, problem resolved :D

07.01.2022 This Dell gaming laptop came in with an overheating issue. I wonder what could cause that?

06.01.2022 This genuine HP X360 Touchscreen laptop was, shall we say, "impacted" during school usage. The power switch was genuinely pushed inside the casing, destroying the genuinely small printed circuit board (PCB) containing the actual switch itself. $80.71 for the replacement, genuine, HP part $50 for an hours labour to disassemble the device, remove the genuine original PCB assembly and install the genuine, new, PCB assembly.... Total price to the customer for this genuine repair using genuine HP parts? $130.71 With a full 12 month warranty on both parts and labour. That's around about one fifth of the cost of replacing the device! Genuine parts keep your HP genuinely happy

06.01.2022 Merry Christmas everyone

05.01.2022 Does your "modern" Dell or HP laptop fail to charge its battery? Does the charger plug no longer fit as well as it used to? Is your laptop warning you about being unable to detect the charger, or the characteristics of the charger when you turn it on? Is your charger becoming increasingly warm when plugged in and charging, perhaps to the point of melting? Chances are you're looking at a broken charger port. This type of repair is one of the most common repairs I am asked to p...erform on the modern Dell and HP equipment. In simpler times, your charger provided two connections to your laptop. DC positive voltage and DC negative voltage. These "modern" machines contain a very easily damaged charger port which uses a third electrical contact. The third contact can be used in one of two ways, either: a) sending a particular voltage to the laptop or b) sending/receiving data between itself and the laptop. I consider the point of this third electrical contact to be up for debate. * Some will tell you it's there to tell the computer it has a genuine power supply connected and to charge the computer properly (most likely, this is why not every aftermarket charger will work with your laptop) * Some will tell you it's to monitor the battery as it charges and disable charging when full (made redundant by both the battery and computer itself monitoring and controlling the charging of the lithium cells in the battery) * Some will tell you it exists purely to tell the computer it's plugged into "a" charger (made redundant by the computer being able to sense input voltage and power) Regardless of its purpose, if your charger port is damaged, your laptop won't see this third contact and will more than likely not charge. Some HP's will charge up to a certain percentage and then refuse to charge any further, although I've only seen one machine that exhibited this behaviour. In some cases, the damaged charger port can send high power back through this third pin and destroy the charger itself. These ports are proof that the older technologies are often the better technologies. They're also quick and cost effective to replace at CoDex I.T. So before you replace that laptop that doesn't charge anymore, book it in for a completely fee and obligation free diagnostic check and if I can identify the charger port as an issue, you could be looking at a very cost-effective method of keeping that old laptop in service longer and save you a packet on buying a new machine. The port in the picture is from a Dell Inspiron 5559. The charge socket itself: $24 Plus installation: $50 Total price for this repair $74 at CoDex I.T

05.01.2022 This desktop PC came in with wireless networking issues. The customer explained their NBN runs through satellite. Their satellite was installed facing directly into a tree though, so their internet experience is never going to be the best. But their laptop works just fine, so what could be the issue? CoDex I.T installed an internal PCI-E wireless network adaptor by Asus as the customers original USB-Wireless adaptor has become too old and unreliable. Wireless networking speed... tests were then completed and the customer took home their device. Asus PCI-E Wireless network adapter: $23.75 Installation: $30.00 Total price for this less-than-an-hour upgrade: $53.75 at CoDex I.T

05.01.2022 CoDex I.T will be closed until further notice. Thankyou all for your continued support.I have had the flu for the last three weeks, only just getting over it now. However, during those three weeks, I have not been allowed any downtime, or even to slow down a little. The life of a computer tech. I had to force myself to persevere through some rather intense repairs over the last few weeks so as to continue to service my customers.... Saturday morning, still with the flu, I was trying to sleep in, but a knock on my front door at 9am and a subsequent "urgent" laptop repair made any down time take a back seat. Sunday was also wiped out due to another job that had to be done by Monday. Since my advertised illness yielded no reprieve, I have had no choice but to officially close the business temporarily. I don't care if I lose page likes, I don't care if I lose work. I am going to be taking at LEAST a week off, something I haven't been allowed to do in over a year. When I come back, I will be instigating some changes to how business is done here. Specifically: * Business hours will be reduced to Monday-Friday, 9am-2.30pm - Any / all calls outside these new hours will be ignored * The hourly rate will be increased. * Weekend work will be strictly prohibited * New intake forms will be drafted from scratch and strictly adhered to * Filling out the intake form and anything omitted from the intake form will be your (the customers) responsibility * Accessories that bare no impact on repair, such as USB mouse dongles, bags, booklets, power supplies (unless required) will no longer be my responsibility and will be handed back to you * All "is it ready yet" phone calls will be ignored as they extend repair time * Jobs will be logged in by appointment ONLY, all jobs will still be subject to triage and executed at my discretion. * ALL jobs will be "no rush" jobs, unless you specifically require the repair be done in a specific time frame AND if it is possible to do so * I'll be dropping the ex-government, refurbished laptop products due to the supplier failing to abide by warranties See you all in a week or so.

02.01.2022 Hi everyone, I haven't posted in a while, thanks to covid I've been working pretty much non stop. I won't be taking any new jobs on for the rest of the week. I'm taking some time off to catch up on the queue and just take it easy for a few days. Plus, if I'm honest, my workshop could really do with a tidy up . Back to business as usual next week. ... Cheers, Alistair

01.01.2022 I'll be closed for the rest of the week. I'm currently sitting beside my son's hospital bed while we await the doctors visit after his THIRD head/neck injury at no other than Nambour State College this year. Granted this time it was an "accident" where Alex was Pushed down a slide without being prepared, his bag and laptop in tow. Thanks Nambour State College, for providing a "safe" place for students to learn.
