20.01.2022 Academy for Enterprising Girls Workshop inspires students to reach for the skies Some young entrepreneurs with big ideas enhanced their collaborative and critical thinking skills last Wednesday, through employing the design thinking method to tackle some of the world’s biggest issues. Facilitated by the Academy For Enterprising Girls the entire workshop was delivered online due to COVID restrictions. The students enthusiastically navigated the empathise define ideate pr...ototype pitch pathway of design thinking to envision what their ideas would look and feel like as products. Some of the feedback from the students in attendance; I loved that we could create our own pitch, and that we got to brainstorm some global issues that we though ere important. Overall, I think this was very useful and helpful workshop. :) The collaboration with my peers on identifying world issues and how we could potentially solve them with technology. Coming up with ideas of how to improve the world. It will be exciting to see how these 21st century skills the students have developed will be utilised in the future. https://www.facebook.com/enterprisinggirls/ @enterprisinggirls See more

20.01.2022 A great day in the Leading Edge STEM Centre at Mountain Creek High today with Create Noosa running their Jam Hack day follow up to the recent Immerse Conference. Creatives of all ages sharing ideas on how they can use AR and VR as part of their creative projects.

19.01.2022 Great leadership by Saara S (STEM Captain) and her STEM team of Jenna R and Sophie G as they host the inaugural Startup mInI day for year 5 students from across our feeder primary schools. An excellent initiative with concept development, planning and now delivery by the STEM team, with as-needed support from Ms Emma Hodkinson

18.01.2022 STEM Ambassadors creating a legacy at MCSHS Recently year 10 STEM ambassador Saara S participated in the 2019 STEM Girl Power Camp Alumni Event as a wrap up to this initiative supported by the Queensland Department of Education and University of Queensland. Saara has made many strong connections through this program with like-minded students interested in the STEM disciplines to underpin their future careers. More information about the program can be found at the departments ...twitter page. https://twitter.com/QLDStateSchools Furthermore Saara has collaborated with previous STEM girl power camp participant and current STEM captain of MCSHS Lauren VD to launch the ‘Academy for Enterprising girls’ at MCSHS. https://enterprisinggirls.com.au/ This initiative is Funded by Government at a Federal level and hopes to tap into interested students to develop the skills they need for the future. The online program is free and is based on design thinking. Young women participating in the program will be encouraged to cultivate their skills in design thinking, coding, business skills and STEM via self-paced online learning, or as part of an in-person workshop program. Lauren and Saara have adopted this program as part of the STEM team at MCSHS and aim on supporting participants and perhaps enhancing the program with supporting workshops through collaboration with Renee Coman at USC’s innovation centre. https://innovationcentre.com.au/ Just recently, Sophie G has been successful in attaining a place at the STEM girl power camp for 2020. Sophie submitted an excellent application highlighting her STEM credentials and strong leadership skills both within MCSHS and within the wider Sunshine Coast community. Huge congratulations to Sophie, we wish her all the best in her endeavours next year. This is the third consecutive year Mountain Creek has nominated a successful applicant for this prestigious event, building a strong legacy of STEM innovation at the school.

17.01.2022 Invitation to become an Industry Partner (IP) and help school students learn how the ICT industry operates. To find out more, visit the Industry Partner registration page - https://qldictgisp.acs.org.au/partners.html MORE DETAIL: During the second half of 2020, the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and Department of Education, Small Business and Investment (DESBT) partnered to create the Gateway to Industry in Schools Program (GiSP) to roll out across all regions in QLD. The ...idea is for a wide range of schools to be admitted and a range of industry partners to join with the benefits to students of: - ensuring industry standards and culture is passed onto students before they leave school - receiving valuable insight into what a tech career can offer - access to unique advice and experiences that will help to validate and trial where a career in gaming, software development, cyber security, artificial intelligence, etc could take them in the future The benefit to industry is: - school-leaver employees are aware of what each type of job entails - ideally a managed process through which schools can access industry advice for their students, ensuring the load is spread as evenly as possible Current industry partners who have already, or are in the process of signing up, are: - The Creative Collective - Sunshine Coast Council - Silicon Coast To give an idea of the levels of commitment involved as an industry partner, recently Yvette Adams from The Creative Collective agreed to come to Mountain Creek High and talk to the year 11 Certificate III in Information Technology students. Topics covered in the 1 hour talk were both operational and technical aspects, for example, the process of confirming the brief on a given job prior to commencement, and some discussions around Wordpress usage. Yvette then invited the students to come and visit her premises and chat with her staff about various aspects. The foundation school on the Sunshine Coast in 2020 is Mountain Creek State High School but more schools (public and private) will be added every year If you would be interested in becoming an Industry Partner with the ACS GiSP program, please visit the Industry Partner registration page - https://qldictgisp.acs.org.au/partners.html and an ACS project officer will be in contact. #ACS #ICT #industry #sunshinecoast

12.01.2022 Coding and Innovation STEM Academy The focus this year in the STEM Academy has been in improving Arduino electronics programming skills and practising pitching of solutions. The UN Sustainability Goals are embedded throughout the course and so final pitches to the Shark Tank-style judging panel covered all key areas of interest to industry groups including confirmed problem, tested solution using technology and based on science facts, and addressing one or more of the UN Su...stainability Goals. A highlight included two year 8 students (Saul N-R and Eva L) being invited to the Innovation Centre based at University of the Sunshine Coast to pitch to the members and guests. The feedback was exceptional! Also impressive was the Arduino-based solution developed by year 8 student Ethan T. The feedback from the judges was admiration for such a sophisticated solution. Well done Ethan! See more
