19.01.2022 There is some positive research around the use of Sauna's and post exercise recovery, now it seems we can add heart health and lowering blood pressure to the list. A Finland study has found that using a sauna regularly can reduce these health conditions along with reducing your risk of dementia and respiratory diseases. When the body is exposed to the heat, blood vessels in the skin dilate (become wider) to bring blood from the inside of the body to the skin surface where heat can be exchanged with the environment. This in turn has a positive effect on health. Here is the link to the study- https://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org//S0025-6196/fulltext

16.01.2022 Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed beverages around the world. While it can have some benefits, it’s important to not overdo it. Caffeine triggers your ‘fight or flight’ response.. I’m sure we all know what it feels like to have a few too many cups of coffee on a busy day. With exams, the holiday season approaching and feeling generally exhausted from the year it might be time to have a break from coffee and let your body rest. There are plenty of great alternatives,... like herbal tea or kombucha. Roasted dandelion has a great coffee-like flavour without the jitters, and also supports liver function! If you can’t quit, try and reduce how much you’re having either by getting a half-strength or reducing how many cups your having gradually. And don’t forget to drink water, especially to avoid the withdrawal headaches. Give it a go for a week or two and see how you feel.
15.01.2022 Do you experience stomach upset, headaches, mood disturbances or feel unusually tired or run down? Salicylates, amines, oxalates and fermentable carbohydrates commonly cause food sensitivities, leading to a wide range of symptoms from depression to chronic health problems. Adults aren’t the only ones who can experience food sensitivities, children can experience irritability, sleep problems or wild mood swings. It is not uncommon for food intolerances to be misdiagnosed as ADHD, and food sensitivities can aggravate Autism Spectrum behaviours. 14.01.2022 Did you know the Orange Roughy or Deep Sea Perch, a species commonly eaten in Australia and America, can live for up to 250 years?! This makes it one of the longest lived marine animals on record. The oldest Orange Roughy was caught off the coast of Tasmania - researchers use parts of the inner ear (otoliths) to calculate its age. In my opinion, this is not a good fish to eat not only because it is a long-lived fish and therefore has a high mercury content (mean level of 0.48mg/kg), or because it is mainly caught with deep water trawling (a destructive practice), but because it could be more than twice the age of your grandparents!
12.01.2022 What a great quote from a great interviewer. Be inquisitive with your questioning, you never know what you may learn!
11.01.2022 Being positive or happy has a direct impact on how those around you feel.
09.01.2022 Calendula is the beautiful golden flower used both externally and internally. It is used topically to treat skin wounds such as burns, eczema and inflammatory skin conditions, bruises, sunburn and nappy rash. Internally calendula has been used in the treatment of the cardiovascular system, respiratory tract, gastro-intestinal tract and reproductive system. It has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial (antiviral, antibacterial, anti fungal), topical antiseptic, astringent, spasmolytic, emmenagogue (stimulates or increases menstrual flow) and vulnerary (wound healing) properties.
06.01.2022 It’s a busy time of year, so it’s understandable to be a little tired and time poor. But it is still important to take care of yourself! Your health and wellbeing should still be a priority in the holiday season. Here are some of my top tips to feeling great this summer - -Prioritise exercise - pick something you enjoy and get moving! Exercise is so much more enjoyable when you’re doing something you enjoy. Whether that’s going for a walk in nature, finding a workout video o...n YouTube or going to the gym. Schedule in some time in your week to keep you accountable. Exercise boosts your mood and can reduce feelings of stress by releasing feel good endorphins! -Eat regular, well balanced meals - It’s easy to caught up running around.. and next minute you’ve somehow missed lunch! Eating regular balanced meals is beneficial for your health and hormones. Not to mention gives you the energy to get everything done (and avoid that late night binge!) -Work on your sleep hygiene - sleep is so important for your health and wellbeing! All too often if can be neglected, so do your best to set up a good night time routine to ensure you’re getting quality sleep. Try and avoid using electronics at least 30 minutes before bed, or invest in some blue light glasses or a blue light blocker as blue light can inhibit melatonin production. Dimming the lights can also help in the production of melatonin which is that all important sleep hormone. -Schedule in some ‘me time’! Take some time, whether its 5 minutes or one hour and do something that makes you happy! Need I say more? Take it slow! You don’t have to implement everything at once, try focusing on one thing and go from there. What are you going to focus on this week?
05.01.2022 Lemon Balm is a beautiful perennial herb, used for calming stress, anxiety and easing insomnia. It has sedative, antiviral, antispasmodic antimicrobial properties (to name a few). I love adding lemon balm to my tea at the end of the day to wind down, and help have a great night sleep!
05.01.2022 The ideology behind natural medicine revolves around vitalism and self-healing. Natural medicine systems aim to include gentle therapeutic techniques involving the body, mind and emotions to assist in the healing process. It is believed that muscles, bones and nerves are interconnected, therefore when structures of the body system are aligned; the body is able to function at its best and support self-healing. 04.01.2022 There are many reasons to buy organic produce - from health benefits and food safety, to concerns about the environment. Buying organic produce can help reduce exposure to chemicals which has many benefits. Positive outcomes from numerous studies have shown lower rates of infertility, allergic sensitivities and metabolic syndrome. Studies have even shown lower urinary pesticide levels from eating an organic diet, so if you’re trying to reduce your chemical and toxic load eat...ing organic can be beneficial! I’m sure you’ve all heard of the Dirty Dozen? These are the foods that have the highest pesticide residue when farmed. Buying organic foods may not always possible, or if you’re just not sure where to start here are some fruits and vegetables you can prioritise at the store or the markets - 1. Strawberries 2. Spinach 3. Kale 4. Nectarines 5. Apples 6. Grapes 7. Peaches 8. Cherries 9. Pears 10. Tomatoes 11. Celery 12. Potatoes https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/12/1/7/htm
04.01.2022 Do you have Crohns Disease? There is some interesting research around emulsifiers used in foods and how it may contribute to Crohns. One study highlights that our increase in processed foods means we are consuming more emulsifiers which may be contributing to an increase in people with Crohns. In another study they found that polysorbate 80 (ice cream, frozen custard, whipped toppings and other frozen desserts) gave bacteria such as e.coli an opportunity to move through the gut lining. They also found that this can be reduced by eating more plant based fibres. (ref https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20813719/ and (ref. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23360575/)
