20.01.2022 DOG WALKERS & ANIMAL MINDERS WANTED. * Do you love dogs and mostly all other animals? * Do you enjoy low impact exercise whilst enjoying the Canberran landscape ... and fresh air (when it isn't contaminated by fire/smoke/dust)? * Do you have experience working with animals and have formal qualifications? * Do you have free time during the workday and on weekends? * Can you provide a clear record police check? If you answered "YES" to these questions then Cody's Companions needs you. 12.01.2022 We've all got to find our own place in the world
09.01.2022 Pets, Vets and Covid 19 I’m a registered veterinary nurse and I manage the emergency nursing department at a busy specialist/emergency vet hospital in Sydne...y. (Apologies for the length of the post) Many people think vet nurses just look after dogs and cats and give them cuddles in hospital. For clarity - just yesterday alone I triaged many unwell animals, one who was in cardiac arrest, placed numerous IV catheters, performed CPR compressions (unfortunately resuscitation was unsuccessful), took many animals vitals (blood pressures on an animal trying to bite you can be tricky!) Gave a dog a bottom bath as she’d pooped all over herself. The list goes on! Yesterday I was only supposed to be training a new nurse. The actual critical care nurse in my team got triple the amount of work I did. (Legend!) I want to share this with the public as Covid 19 has changed the way we do things, and there have been some trends that pet owners should be aware of. We no longer allow owners in the hospital at all (most vet clinics are doing this now). This is super hard for clients - we get it! It’s hard for us too. We’re trying to protect our staff, as one case of Covid 19 hits us, and it’s practically business shut. Yesterday this broke my heart - I FaceTimed with a client and their little dog just before she was heading in to an emergency surgery. They were crying and dying to hug her, I was tearing up because I could hear how broken they were. We get it. The day prior, one of my nurses was verbally abused because she couldn’t let an owner in the hospital. This kind of abuse happens daily. Our staff are on 12 hour shifts and have been split in to teams. Perks of emergency is that we can’t just all switch off at a certain hour because our shift said so. We’re still thinking about work hours later! (Hello, no sleep!) It also means that we have to have a hospital cross over, one team leave - another enter. If you arrive at this hour with your itchy dog, and get cranky that there is a delay, I can assure you it’s because we’re focusing on getting updated on the patients who are actively trying to die. I’ve seen 3 major trends in our ER since Covid 19: People are at home. They’re noticing things with their animals and getting them sorted. (Not walking right, lumps, rashes, sore eye etc...) The ER are seeing things that have been going on for days, weeks and possibly months. We are TOTALLY happy seeing your animals, but please understand the logistics. You need to wait in your car, your pet waits in the hospital with a nurse, we are always busy and emergency’s always take priority. We just ask for your patience and kindness while you wait, because it may be a number of hours. Self isolation and working from home has got people thinking about getting a new puppy or kitten. We have been inundated with people who have adopted or bought a new animal, and their new baby animal is unwell. (Puppies and kittens can be quite fragile) The major problem here is that people haven’t always considered the costs associated with a sick baby animal. Many people are out of work, or their income is stretched at the moment - a new commitment added to the mix can really make things tough. I’ve seen many people making some really hard decisions; because financially they cannot keep committed to this animal. My point being, just make sure you’re financially able to commit - not just able to love and care. Vet care is expensive because there is no Medicare, no PBS scheme, no government funding. (Better yet, get pet insurance!) Lastly, people are out walking their dogs! Which is fantastic - however, yesterday we saw 4 traumatic injuries from dog fights alone. These injuries were all life threatening. Walking your dog who doesn’t normally get walked; and who isn’t properly socialised can be a disaster. Two of the owners of these dogs were also needing medical treatment (at the people doctors, of course). Please ensure your dog is correctly restrained when you’re on a walk, and if they get aggressive with other dogs, don’t walk in the park or in areas with heavy foot traffic. Veterinarians, Veterinary Nurses, Veterinary Receptionists, Hospital Managers, Animal Attendants & our Hospital Cleaners are ALL essential workers. Please be kind to them, because they may be the one helping your furry friend get better when their unwell. Also - just a note for our human counterparts (Doctors/Nurses & all other human healthcare workers & support staff). You’re all bloody legends!! See you all on the other side of Covid 19! (Thank you for reading if you gotten this far!)
