23.01.2022 On 25 December 1817, the patriarch of the Everingham family, Matthew James, died in 1817. Matthew, a "settler and district constable at Portland Head, fell over...board from a Hawkesbury boat, and was unfortunately drowned." Aged 48 years, his death was reported in the Sydney Gazette http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article2177671 He was buried at Wilberforce Cemetery and his headstone is pictured. Matthew was a convict who arrived on the 'Scarborough' with the First Fleet in 1788. He had been convicted in London in 1784 and was sentenced to transportation to the colonies for 7 years. He established a dynasty with many Everingham descendants still living in the Hawkesbury. More information see the Australian Dictionary of Biography http://adb.anu.edu.au/biograp/everingham-matthew-james-2030 or in the various books published by the late Val Ross or the Cornstalk’s series.
