19.01.2022 On Friday 28 August the Coffs Harbour Music Society presented a piano masterclass for pianists in the region with visiting concert pianist, Kenny Broberg (USA).... Kenny’s instruction on musical interpretation was inspiring and instructive for all the students who attended. Helen Neville (alumni BDC) opened the masterclass playing Chopin’s D flat nocturne. Kenny offered suggestions on pedalling and phrasing to this very difficult and mature work. Joshua Walraven played his first movement of the Haydn sonata and Kenny was very impressed at his ability at such a young age. April Nyugen played one of the Beethoven Bagatelle’s and Kenny was inspiring April to listen to the strangeness and bizarre phrasing of Beethoven’s. Marisol Taylor played her first movement of the Mozart sonata, which Kenny knew very well and inspired her by his beautiful rendition of the work. Tilly Howard played Debussy’s Arabesque no.1 and Kenny was very encouraged by her playing, helping her with some of the more technical difficulties of the piece and bringing out the sonorities of the French composers. This was an amazing opportunity for the BDC students.
