08.01.2022 By Neil Evans Coffs Harbour gallopers are set to apply the blowtorch at Friday's feature Krambach Cup meeting at Taree. In fact, not only does an early Quinella loom in race two, the hot favourite may well well get a stern test from one of his neighbours in a Class 2 Plate (1250m) for country-based horses only.... After four progressive runs back from a spell, smart four-year-old gelding Pace Stick is likely to jump a short-priced fancy for the Coffs stable of Brett Dodson. A fleet-footed son of Jetspur who has only missed a place twice in seven starts, Pace Stick is the clear one to beat after being run down in the last few strides in a much stronger Highway at Randwick before missing by a nose in a Class 2 at Port Macquarie. But the other Brett from the 'Big Banana' yards - Bellamy - will throw down a challenge with his improving four-year-old gelding Venusian who has gone to a new level in the last two runs. An off-speed son of former Group 2 winner Cluster, Venusian bolted in a Class 1 at Grafton two runs back before charging home late in a BM 58 at Lismore, and while this is a little tougher, he's never raced better. While fellow Coffs trainer Donna Grisedale might have her hands full with seven-year-old Fabricator in the feature Krambach Cup (1600m), and nine-year-old Waltzing Willie in the Krambach Sprint (1250m), Paul Smith's consistent four-year-old Moonhawk can finally break through this prep after being run down in the last hop at Armidale. Drawn to either lead or sit right behind in a BM 58 Hcp (1000m), Moonhawk looks supremely in at the weights after the rider's 3kg claim. He can break a run of outs that stretches back virtually a year, although the challenge will come from promising Newcastle filly Foxy Xenia who was a dominant winner on debut at Port Macquarie.

04.01.2022 LAST Race Bart struck at Coffs Harbour today. At least that’s what Coffs Harbour trainer Brett Bellamy reckoned after he won the final race of Coffs Harbour Cup day with third emergency Secrets No More. The seven-year-old daughter of Sequalo held off a bunch of fast finishing rivals to snare the $30,000 Grant Bastian Memorial Class 3 Showcase Handicap (1200m). It was her third win in 55 starts. Last race Bart, that’s what they call me, Brett Bellamy joked.... Won with a 100-1 pop. She’s an honest little horse. Tries her heart out every time she races. Tegan (Harrison) rode her before and got beaten a wart. She went a bit better today. This is her home track too, he said of Secrets No More. Always good to get up on Cup day as well. We bred her as well and own her. Raced her mum (Secret Cavern). She was also third emergency. We weren’t going to run her, as well LRB said. He’s delighted he did. See more

02.01.2022 By Neil Evans They may call the Big Banana home, but it's up the road where the fruits of success can taste even better for a string of Coffs Harbour stables. In fact, Coffs trainers are riding their strongest ever calendar year, and Tuesday's feature Grafton meeting is next on the menu.... And it might just be one of their more under-rated trainers that strikes first with a frustrating mare who often threatens without delivering. Sally Taylor saddles up six-year-old Rival Mo in a modest BM 58 Hcp (2230m) looking to break a run of outs that stretches back to January. Mind you, Rival Mo has never been a smooth conveyance since debuting nearly three years ago. Even before that first run she had two stable changes, and five in all when Sally took charge of her only a few months ago. Meanwhile, fellow Coffs trainer Warren Gavenlock shoots for two straight with his improving four-year-old Furphy in a Class 1 Hcp (1420m) after an impressive maiden win fourth-up at home. But the highlight race - a Class 3 Hcp (1215m) to close the meeting - is where the "Coffs connection" can shake the life out of more fancied home track rivals. Few runners around the region have more natural ability than six-year-old mare Alternative Facts, but she's as inconsistent as she is talented, and Gavenlock has been very sparing in his approach this prep. It's easy to forget Alternative Facts finished close-up in a Highway and strong BM 66 back in summer before tackling a Country C'ship qualifier. But since then it's been a slow grind, and after returning with a flat run at Wyong, she has since won a trial and may just be ready to recapture her best at Grafton, ironically where she won her first race nearly two years ago. Drawn just a few barriers further out, fellow Coffs galloper Northern Knight resumes for the Brett Bellamy yard, with the blinkers coming off. He also took on much stronger company last prep, including a fast-finishing effort in a Highway on the Kensington track in late autumn. Both, though, will need to be at their best. Smart Far North Coast four-year-old Vivendo Il Sogno drops back from a stronger Class 3 at Doomben; while talented and in-form local gelding Bozeman looks hard to beat from a good draw.
