24.01.2022 Second swarm of the season. Didnt look very big at first sight but once they started moving its size surprised me.
22.01.2022 It's a bumper season for clover and especially the large blooms of red clover. The paddocks are buzzing with activity with the girls out early to late filling their buckets The honey produced is quite light and delicate. Can't wait to extract the new batch and savour.
22.01.2022 A very full hive needing its frames replaced. Once the frames are full of honey they start putting comb on the lid of their boxes. This is not an ideal situation and requires quite a bit of work to fix. However, this can happen to high producing hives when there is a good honey flow. Working hard they can manage to refill the frames in a couple of weeks. So, if I'm slow to check, they can start to fill every available space with extra comb and fill it with honey.
22.01.2022 The hot liquid bee's wax is filtered into 'takeaway' containers where it solidifies and remains ready for... your project
21.01.2022 In full bloom the lavender is very popular with the bees. Hoping to get the unique lavender scents and flavours to come through in the next batch. Not long now
21.01.2022 Sunshine in a block. Autumn wax after first melt and preliminary cleaning. Nearly ready for candles or wraps.
18.01.2022 Just a few of the flowers the bees are collecting nectar from here at Coila: lavender, orange jasmine, various varieties of gum trees and clover
17.01.2022 Boxes are full! Harvesting will be in full swing very soon #coilashoresapiary
17.01.2022 Blue Banded bee in competition with a couple of my girls. Don't often get an oportunity to record these unique little guys because they are so quick and generally shy away from close inspection. So nice to see this one foraging around the garden.
17.01.2022 Today I introduced my girls to some new food. It's a specially designed science diet for suplimentary feeding bees. Has all the essential ingredients and nutrition to help maintain strong bees and hives during winter. Drought and fires has made foraging difficult with most of their usual resources now scarce or non existent. I first put some of the powder on the lid of a bucket. It wasn't long before they started gathering and returning to their hives....with happy buzzing.
14.01.2022 Dad talking about the success of the new feed he’s giving the girls to get through the winter months Thank you #custombeefeed Enjoy! Katherine
12.01.2022 The frames are spun around in the extractor to draw the honey off the comb, it then comes out the tap at the bottom and strained to remove large pieces of wax.
12.01.2022 Dusted with the new feed. So good to see how much is being returned to the hives. I think this bee must have really enjoyed pigging out .... maybe in a food coma
11.01.2022 One of our newest hives needs a new box that means more honey
11.01.2022 The girls have been busy during Spring. Every frame in this honey super is full. Has been a wonderful season so far. They are now back at work refilling them for all you honey addicts

09.01.2022 Essential service
08.01.2022 The metal grate is called a queen excluder. Because the queen is larger than her workers, she can’t squeeze through the bars and this keeps her in the bottom or brood box. This restricts her laying to the one area. This allows us to safely harvest honey from the top boxes without interfering with the queen or her babies. These top boxes are called honey supers where honey supplies are stored.
