25.01.2022 Spotlight 8: Doncaster (2020) - Constructed over three-storeys, our Doncaster centre underwent two major design overhauls in order to meet new requirements set by the Department of Education and Training (DET). Co-lab assisted in the establishment of these regulations in conjunction with the DET as part of the Early Childhood Design Guide. The revised centre will provide an abundance of natural light to childcare rooms and outdoor play areas while utilising cantilevered balco...nies to provide generous outdoor spaces. Balcony cantilevers and mature native trees provide shading to outdoor spaces on the lower floors while adjustable shading pergolas protect the rooftop areas. Double doors and double hung windows bridging all playrooms and outdoor spaces provide provisions for cross ventilation. #childcarearchitecture

24.01.2022 Spotlight 5: Merrifield (2017) - Situated along a growth corridor in Melbournes outer north, Merrifield was intended to provide amenity for residents in the rapidly growing suburb of Mickleham. The childcare centre now acts as a hub for those in the area, accomodating 130 children and assisting the development of stronger family-neighbourhood connections. A series of steel cables across the building facade and a screen fence surrounding the outdoor play area allow for climbi...ng plants to cover sections of the building and enhance the connection between the building and the natural environment while also providing privacy to the outdoor play area. Endemic tree species such as White Gum, Yellow Gum and Correa have been planted around the perimeter of the site to contribute to the amenity of the area and providing shelter and food for native wildlife and pollinators. 21.01.2022 Spotlight 6: Grey Goose (2015) - Named after our clients particular affinity for a vodka brand, Grey Goose apartment converted bare concrete walls and floors into a warm, yet spacious two-bedroom apartment. Instead of using walls to break up the space, a more unorthodox approach was taken where a series of perceived levels were introduced into the space. The variation in floor and ceiling level is accompanied by a subtle change in timber grain to demarcate changes in space w...hich alleviates the need for walls in most spaces. This opened up internal spaces for mixed program use, allowing our client to practice yoga, entertain guests and find a quiet corner to read. The master bedroom is accessible through a secrete door disguised amongst a bookcase, with a translucent backing to fill the bedroom with ambient light while also maintaining complete privacy.

09.01.2022 Spotlight 7: Docklands (2012) - As the very first childcare project in the Co-lab catalogue, our Docklands centre was, in every sense, a trial by fire. The brief involved converting the southern wing of the Docklands Goods Shed into an 130 place childcare centre. Along with some expected teething problems as Co-labs first childcare project, the building was also heritage listed and situated on a major intersection on the fringes of Melbournes CBD. The heritage requirements... stipulated that all wrought iron columns and roof trusses must be preserved while all external facades of the Goods Shed were to be maintained with no perforations to existing walls permitted. Navigating these conditions, Co-lab designed the centre with the intention of maintaining as much of the existing building as possible while providing the shed with a contemporary facelift that would cater to its use as an education facility. The result is a distinctive childcare centre that both maintains the character of the Goods Shed and gives it a new life as a space that fosters learning and development in young kids.
