25.01.2022 A great primer into systems thinking in an urban context by David Orr. #SystemsThinking #ResilientCities #RegenerativeCultures #Sustainability

24.01.2022 'Plant species are disappearing faster than we can find and name them', says Akexandre Antonelli the director of science at the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens in the UK. In a recent report that analysed the state of the world's plants and fungi, the stats are looking pretty grim. Around two-fifths of the worlds plants are at risk of extinctionwith 40% of vascular plants at risk, up from 21% in 2016. The impacts of this loss of biodiversity aren't just purely aesthetic. Wild pla...nts are a living treasure trove for humanity. Many potential foods, fuel and medicines will be lost in the coming decades if we do not collectively get our act together. Now, more than ever, we need to explore the solutions that plants and fungi could provide to help us solve the global challenges we face. Luckily, the report is rather optimistic about our future. Whether it's building urban resilience with trees and bees, or feeding the world with new foods, working together towards a sustainable future will be vital to our success. We highly recommend sinking your teeth into the 100 page report, it's packed full of enlightening information, especially the chapter covering the case for the commercialisation of nature-based productsbring on the bio-economy! 22.01.2022 Got a spare hour and a half this long weekend? Of course you do! If you're new to systems thinking, or curious about it's applications to every day life, then we couldn't recommend this video enough. Nicky Case's seminar for The Long Now Foundation is an absolute cracker. #SystemsThinking #LongNowFoundation #Science #Knowledge #Complexity #FeedbackLoops #Chaos ... https://youtu.be/PCwtsK_FhUw

20.01.2022 Of the 4 billion-plus pairs of jeans that are made each year, most are dyed with petroleum-based dyes that use chemicals such as benzene and formaldehyde. At some factories, the toxic wastewater from the process is dumped into local rivers. But at a Bay Area lab, a startup called Huue is experimenting with a less toxic way to turn denim blue: using bio-based dyes brewed in bioreactors. #BioEconomy #SustainableScience #Dye #NaturalDye #Bacteria #BioTech #WomenInSTEM #STEM #FemaleFounders #StartUp #Science

19.01.2022 A plant which had previously been dismissed as not being medically useful could prove to be a hero in disguise, after scientists discovered it not only stops the growth of breast cancer cells but does not affect normal cells a potential first for future cancer chemotherapy treatment. #Plants #ThaleCress #Science #Medicine #Botany #Chemotherapy #Biology #Medicinal #Phytochemicals #Phytology #PlantScience #MedicinalPlants

17.01.2022 Electronic devices and biological cells usually communicate through very different mechanisms. Until now, that is. Scientists report progress on tiny communication networks that overcome this language barrier, allowing two way communication between cells and electronics. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2020//200817104319.htm #Biology #BioTech #Electronics #Technology #MedTech #ComputerScience

16.01.2022 There are a diverse range of startups working to improve our health or innovate the way the health sector operates. Over 500 of these ‘healthtech’ and ‘biotech’ businesses, have popped up in recent years. 11.01.2022 The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, a 20 year old piece of legislation, has no reference at all to climate change. It's probably time for an update. An interim report from the review, chaired by the former competition watchdog chairman Graeme Samuel, was published in July and found governments had failed to protect Australia’s unique native species. #BioDiversity #Nature #EnvironmentalProtection #Conservation #Australia #EnvironmentalPolicy #EnvironmentalPolitics

11.01.2022 Whilst a lot of the focus during the pandemic is on the adversity it induces, there is definitely a silver lining. Some positive points of the pandemic, among other things, is the way in which it causes us to transition from 'me' thinking, to 'we' thinking. #Science #Sociology #Psychology #Community #Connection #Interbeing

10.01.2022 As Socrates (apparently) once said: 'The only thing I know is that I know nothing.' Spoken like a true scientist! Why? Because true science is mostly concerned with the unknown and the uncertain. If someone claims they know something to be 100% true, the only thing for certain is they are trying to fool you. 10.01.2022 Scientists may have finally solved the black hole information paradox. In a landmark series of calculations, physicists have proved that black holes can shed information, which seems impossible by definition. The work appears to resolve a paradox that Stephen Hawking first described five decades ago. #QuantumPhysics #QuantumEntanglement #Science #Physics #StephenHawking #Information #AstroPhysics #BlackHole #TheoreticalPhysics

04.01.2022 Did you know Australia is home to some of the oldest living things in the world? Well neither did we, that is, until we discovered artist and lover of science @_sussman_. Since 2004 she's been travelling the world and working with biologists to photograph the oldest continuously living organisms. Her work on deep time led her to pose an interesting question: ... 'What does it mean to capture a multi-millennial lifespan in 1/60th of a second? Or for that matter, to be an organism in my 30s bearing witness to organisms that precede human history and will hopefully survive us well into future generations?' #STEM #Biology #DeepTime #Science #Art #Education #Nature #CoLabs

03.01.2022 Vascular plants have come a long way since first bursting onto the geological scene some 425 million years ago in the Early Silurian. 'Umwelt' a video by Katayama Yoshiyuki, captures plant movement, in time-lapse, and composites it with real-time insect imagery. The result? An unbelievably enthralling video. #Plants #Insects #Botany #Umwelt #Cinematography
