24.01.2022 Bit of history....... The Colac Turf Club has had a long and proud tradition of turf racing, education and training of horses that spans more than 150 years. From humble beginnings in 1862 when Colac itself was only 15 years old, The Colac Turf Club was formed. The first meeting was conducted at Pound Reserve. Racing then moved to a site west of Lake Colac as the town grew. It was then decided to move to a permanent home on the high ground overlooking Colac. The current site ...of the Colac Racecourse was reserved for racing and other purposes on December 14th 1863 and gazetted on December 24th 1863. The first public meeting at the current site was in November 1868. The Grandstand was built in 1890. By the early 1900s there were numerous racing clubs throughout the Colac District ranging from Beech Forest to the South, Beeac and Cressy to the North, Pirron Yallock and South Purrumbete to the West and Birregurra to the East. Most of these clubs conducted their meetings on the private properties of the wealthy landholders of the area with a lot of the horses arriving by train. Up until 1912, the main race at the Colac Turf Clubs Annual Meeting was the Colac Handicap. The race changed to the Colac Cup from 1913 onwards and carried a purse of 100 sovs. The running of the first Cup saw a Dead Heat between Prince Kirk and McCulloch. In order to determine the winner, there was a run-off between them over the same distance. the pair remained in company until reaching the home turn, where Prince Kirk left McCulloch, and won easing off by four lengths. The 1919 Annual Meeting was abandoned due to the outbreak of the Spanish Flu Pandemic. The club suspended racing during the Second World War. The clubs first post War Cup meeting in 1947 saw record gate takings of 1,200 pounds with 133 bookmakers operating on-course. The clubs Centenary Cup Day meeting in 1962 carried a days total prizemoney of 1,000 pounds. Flemington trainer (formally of Colac) Theo Lewis holds the record of training the winners of 6 Colac Cups. His first was Neutron in 1947 ridden by Arthur Scobie Breasley. Wayne Hokai holds the riding record of 4 wins. His first in 1989 on Hills of Carome (NZ). Bold John (1950) and Welkin Prince (1963) went on to win their respective VRC Australia Cups after saluting in the Colac Cup. Disappointingly only 2 horses accepted for the 1953 Colac Cup, Bold John 6/1 on and Alvie Queen 5/1. Alvie Queen downed the raging favourite to thunderous applause, it was like a Melbourne Cup reception. From being one of the leading A race clubs in Victoria from the 1930s to the 1960s the club was under sever financial stress by 1981 and was set to merge with the Geelong Racing Club. However this was defeated by the members vote and the club has fought its way back into the sound position it is in today.

20.01.2022 JERICHO CUP | Michael Shanahan Maiden Plate 1200m Michael Shanahan was 44 years old when he enlisted. An age when he should have been at home, enjoying the frui...ts of his labour, not going off to war. But off he did go, and into a unique place in Australia’s Heritage. A carpenter from Roma, Queensland, he was a fine horseman as well. He additionally possessed the patient and perseverance to, slowly and methodically, win over a cantankerous rogue horse, appropriately named Bill the Bastard. He was a man hater. He would concede to pack horse duties, but woe betide the man who tried to ride him. To the disbelief of all around him, Shanahan finally won him over. What a fearless combination they became. In the battle of Romani in 1916, the Allies were desperately defending the Suez. Four Tasmanian Light Horsemen had their mounts shot out from under them. Under heavy enemy fire, the horse that would only let one man ride him, suddenly let four more pile on him, and took them out of harm’s way. Later in the same battle Shanahan was shot in the leg. Fighting on, continually losing blood, he eventually passed out in the saddle. Bill, sensing a lack of direction from above, slowly walked him back to the lines, and took him to the Vet! Shanahan lost the leg and the war was over for him. Back to Australia and long term employment as a lift driver in a Brisbane department store. Not a just and fitting ending for a war hero, but there weren’t too many jobs for one legged men, and sadly plenty qualified for the job. MICHAEL SHANAHAN WE SALUTE YOU BETTER LATE THAN NEVER #JerichoCup | #RoadToJericho

19.01.2022 The Colac Turf Club is a training venue in which horses work every morning from 6.00am- 11.00am. The lady that had her dog off leash this morning who was following the horses was putting our trainers and their horses at risk of injury or even death. The lady was extremely rude to the riders when asked to put the dog on the leash. We need our trainers, track work riders and horses to be safe.
