19.01.2022 In a long career teaching and learning I have come to the conclusion that solutions are simple but not necessarily easy. People talk about the basics. There are basics like ride position, horse development and the training process. Then there are other basics. Ability, attitude, application. Ability can be an over rated commodity. Attitude will allow the journey to be faster or slower. Application makes it all possible. Some times I have pupils who I have taught for years. ...I search for the keys to unlocking progress. In the end I ask the question how long have I been telling you to do this in a certain way? When are you going to do that? It does not make sense to pay some one to try and help you and not actually apply yourself to achieving the result. As pupils there can be many break through moments. However, it is totally necessary to be able to replicate those moments. The coach’s role is to try and make sure you understand what you did to get the outcome. It is equally important that we make notes so that we also can remember the process to be able to repeat it again. There are certain basics that are not negotiable. A correct independent position for the rider. A balanced straight horse that is able to move with confidence in its own body. I have yet to find an issue that does not come back to one or other of these two requirements. I have often seen riders get it in a lesson or ride but it is essential that they do the hard yards and establish it other wise the moments disappear into oblivion. Riding, improving and progressing involves unrelenting hard work and concentration. It is totally necessary to be able to give the impression that you are just sitting on a horse and it does every fancy thing you want without anyone knowing what you did. This is across all disciplines and fields of endeavor. To achieve that out come will require blood, sweat and tears and a coach who does not let you off the hook. When you turn into an overnight success you will know how you created that result. Correct position is the best asset of any rider. They will be safe and able to make sure they do not get in the horse’s way. Until your seat bones stay relaxed on the seat of the saddle in all sitting work, your dreams will remain just that- dreams. Obviously, you need a horse who is suitable for you to learn that too. Make decisions about your lessons and decide to achieve the outcomes. One decision each day will turn into a lot of progress over time. I give thanks that I was lucky enough to spend 6 years working for Malcolm Barns at Oakwood. In that time, I achieved tears, blisters and frustration but I learnt things that are still a constant in my daily riding, training and teaching. These days I am just more adamant that it is the right way or the highway. It is a great and unending journey. See more

15.01.2022 Sometimes I get an itch to say something and even manage to write it down. Here follows today's effusion :-) PRODUCING YOUNG HORSES Horses need to grow up to be horses. This means that as youngsters they need to be able to run with other young horses, preferably on a variety of terrain. They need feeding, worming and farriery as needed. It is important to not wrap them in cotton wool because of their value. Handling needs to be appropriate and age related. The earlier they c...Continue reading

13.01.2022 Remembering Malcolm Barns, share his philosophy in this tribute: It seems that dressage has been for at least the last couple of hundred years, a battle ground..., between the forces of darkness, the users - and abusers - of our friend the horse, and the forces of light, the horse people who work with the horse - delighting in his nature and seeking to unfold his brilliance through methods learnt from the horse himself. http://www.horsemagazine.com///02/malcolm-barns-1931-2019/ See more
