22.01.2022 Establishing a good, trusting, relationship with your horse and teaching them to be calm, confident, and sensible isn't just for and about when you're riding them: it helps them cope with unexpected situations without panic and fear and, let's face it, horses are masters of getting themselves into places they shouldn't be. This really struck me when I woke one morning, back in 2015, to find that Ava had got herself into this predicament. Ava had come to me a couple of years e...arlier as an abused horse - she would take off if you so much as raised a hand (to do anything) and would spook at everything. I have no idea how long she had been like this, though she had been fed the evening before so it happened overnight sometime, but what was evident was that she had not panicked when she discovered she was wedged in there and had no way of backing out. She stood calmly as I removed the gate, made my way in past her, and asked her to back out. Rewind a couple of years and the outcome would have undoubtedly been very different. See more
