25.01.2022 How to give a slide presentation (or not). - COLIN PEARCE Good data slides and a few clips lifted from Facebook or YouTube wont turn you into a great presenter. Theres an art to using slides.

25.01.2022 Why you should be a good speaker. Fun, money and influence. But it doesn't come naturally nor does it happen if you wing it. COLIN PEARCE

25.01.2022 You wouldn't believe how important room lay out is for a successful meeting. I have one abiding rule: NEVER, NEVER NEVER trust the room layout to the venue staff. Seriously, what would part-time teenagers know about conference-room layout? They come from a world of school desks. 99% of hotel housemen have never sat in a conference, have never spoken to a conference audience and have never received a critique on their layout from anyone who knows more than they do.... For starters, you have to supervise chair spacing. The venue staff will jam the chairs together to look neat. Your guests need elbow room to feel comfortable. Theyre at a conference, not in cattle class on a plane. They need wiggle and elbow room. The next is so simple, I fail to understand how intelligent people miss it. Dont face your audience toward a window even a curtained window. They will either be distracted by the view or blinded by the light. Put the stage opposite the window. Pull the curtains over and open them at breaks then close them again. In weeks to come: Screens, projection, red beam pointers, slide style, lectern positioning, stairs, dance floors, tea and coffee style, tea and coffee service, food service, name tags, session length, working with the AV operator, microphones, stage lights, wandering speakers, MC role we could be here for months.

24.01.2022 Storytelling for business has come of age at last. - Unfortunately a lot of organisations have no idea how important this is and might miss the trend to their own undoing.https://mailchi.mp//did-they-really-live-happily-ever-afte

24.01.2022 Misjudging your buyer is so easy, anyone can do it. A young fellow I know was giving a Holden HSV the once-over in a posh dealership in a posh suburb. He was dressed in sagging jeans, a check shirt and a hoodie with scruffy hair. He didnt look suitably posh to the salesperson who stepped up and said with a sneer, Youre not in a position to get finance for this one, mate! My young friend replied ... FINISH THE STORY.

21.01.2022 There are all kinds of microphones: A mic aint a mic. They range from the small lapel job worth $10,000 to the blurry, beaten up, banged on, blown in version that was bought in 1968 for the footy club. The microphones that singers hold right on their lips are designed to pick up the singers voice only, so as to cut out all the racket the drums, guitars and bagpipes behind them are making. You are not in that situation when you speak so you dont have to eat the mic. Beside...s its not designed to work like that and all your audience will get is fuzz and distortion. Theres a rule that covers the use of most mics. Get it about 20 to 30 down from your mouth, (pointing up at your mouth) and anything from 6 inches (150 mm) to 9 inches (230mm) away and speak up. Speaking up is the main clue. A mic is a tool. Its like a hammer. It wont hit the nail until you swing it. A mic. cant improve the sound and timbre of your voice unless you put effort into it. All it does is make you sound louder, not better. That bit is up to you.

19.01.2022 MELBOURNE TOO: No more PowerPoint Workshop - https://mailchi.mp/77b7/no-more-powerpoint-workshop-2268309 Stop worrying about how you will come across when you give a presentation. Stop yielding your thought leadership to a box with a globe in it, hoping it will light up the audience for you. They only want to see the light in your eyes, the real you and you show them that with your story, your many stories, your wonderful stories, even those youve buried inside you. I know theyre there. Let me help you dig em out, tell them and shine.

18.01.2022 Sad to say, every day I still see and hear piles of evidence that managers and owners are not putting effort into training their reception and first contact personnel. Your Manager of First Impressions could be your weakest link.

17.01.2022 If you want to seek or tell stories or preach, it would be wise to count the cost as well as the outcomes. Rev. Russell Conwell wrote the booklet, Acres of Diamonds and delivered it as a speech all across the US for years in order to raise funds for the Theological college he founded. He commented, The experiences of all our successful lecturers are probably nearly alike. The way is not always smooth. But the hard roads, the poor hotels, the late trains, the cold halls, the... hot church auditoriums, the overkindness of hospitable committees, and the broken hours of sleep are annoyances one soon forgets; and the hosts of intelligent faces, the messages of thanks, and the effects of the earnings on the lives of young college men can never cease to be a daily joy. God bless them all. Excerpt From: Russell Herman Conwell. Acres of Diamonds: our every-day opportunities. iBooks. pp315 If you want a treat, listen to the scratchy Edison recording of him speaking at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qQ2vTZeGqU

16.01.2022 How do you motivate a salesperon? Big question. A more important question is how do you demotivate one to the point where they become perpetually disinterested?

15.01.2022 In early 2016 my GP told me he had evidence that my PROSTATE GLAND had been unfaithful and wanted to leave me. It was a little unsettling waiting 6 months to get it attended to, mostly because of the proddings and probings of various medical stickybeaks who seemed to enjoy ogling at my nether regions with thing on sticks with lights. In September I donated the stupid cancerous thing to science. I took half a year to get over it all and now I am back on all fours wagging my... tail like a new puppy. NOTE: Men over 40! Get someone to inspect your blood and flip you the bird. I thank God every day for the biologists who came up with the PSA blood test, the Davinci person who invented the robotic-potato-harvesting-stump-jump-prostate-plough: And when the hospital gave me a free add-on: viz: PNEUMONIA, I thanked God for his friend and mine Lord Howard Florey, Baron of Adelaide for coming up with penicillin. 04.01.2022 Whats really wrong with pacing when you speak? Ill be brief: 1. You make the audience restless while they change positions in their seats to follow you because the people in front of them are changing positions in their seats to follow you because the people in front of them are changing 2. Theres an old standard in theatre which says, Dont move unless your character has motivation to move or STAND STILL unless theres a good reason to move. Moving about on the stag...e is as silly as the child in the school nativity play who takes a step forward so her Mum can see its her speaking under her shepherds beard. 3. Its mentally and theatrically lazy to bob and weave like a ping pong player. 4. You lose the impact of voice and tone by dissipating your energy with pacing. 5. You send a message that you are a genuine try-hard and not a trained professional. See more

03.01.2022 Timeless advice: from a parent to a child about 2,700 years ago: My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight,... keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to ones whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil. See more

03.01.2022 Dont touch the $10,000 microphone! I had been in broadcasting for 15 years and knew about dainty technical objects. I also knew that it was important to speak into a microphone set 30 down for my lips and about 9 inches away from my chin. So in a pre-conference voice-check at the Adelaide Convention Centres main theatre I went to move the double lectern mics to suit. Suddenly through the ether came a stentorian order from the control desk, Dont touch the $10,000 micropho...ne! I was amused at us both because Id never come across an operator who cared for his equipment like that, and at myself for finally meeting such a one. Ive passed that advice on to as many mic users as I can. Leave the microphone to the PA operator. Dont tap it to see if its on. And never ever ever ever blow in it. There are sensitive membranes and gizmos within that dont like spit and whooshing bad breath. When you are about to take the stage, ask the PA operator or the MC to adjust the mic for you. Dont be caught fighting with the boom section of a typical singers mic yourself. If you do have to handle it on your own, say this to the PA operator from the stage, Bob, Im going to adjust the mic to my height so lets drop the volume a sec so I dont deafen everyone. And dont take it out of its mount on the stand. It likes it where it is. Coming up: You probably dont need to demand a lavallire mic?
