06.01.2022 STOP THE PRESSES! On Tuesday 4th September the Shire forwarded to NRA a letter from the Minister to Mayor Bryan Payne clearly stating that the Department has been instructed to proceed no further with a rock revetment wall, to take the steps required to repair the sandbag wall, and to undertake investigation of appropriate steps to reinstate the beach. This is what we have all been trying to achieve for over a year. Congratulations are due to Colin Watson and to Cr Hugh Fraser, and thanks to the recently departed Shire CEO, Carl Cowie, for their work in obtaining the required outcome. Further the work of Kellie Crosthwaite in the Department also needs to be appreciated.

02.01.2022 I have been casually following many recent comments members of the group have been expressing about the environmental disaster that has occurred at Point Nepean, Portsea front beach, Shelley beach and Point King. I think it important to provide you all with some far more factual information as some of the personal views are incorrect and causing unnecessary confusion amongst our community. The department ( DELWP ) in 2017 commissioned Advisian to model six options that may a...ssist in the remediation of the Portsea beach, however only two of the options could have succeeded in diverting the wave energy which is fundamental for the restoration of the beach. I was involved with Advisian right through this process as a member of the key stakeholder group and whilst Advisian were not asked to nominate their preferred option it was very obvious that they preferred the option named Reconfiguration of the Seabed. The key stakeholder group were asked to nominate their preferred option which was tabled with DELWP, that information was then forwarded to the Minister for the Environment ( Ms L D' Ambrosio) for her consideration. Shortly after I was invited to meet the Minsters Chief Adviser as they had made their decision about the Portsea beach. At this meeting the key stakeholder group were advised that the current sand bag wall was going to be replaced by a permanent rock wall at a cost of $3M as the Government could not afford to spend the $20M cost of reconfiguring the seabed which would have deflected the wave energy and resulted in the beach coming back. Since then DELWP appears to be pushing ahead with this option in spite of us expressing very strongly how disappointed we are. As a result the NRA in conjunction with the Portsea Foreshore Advisory Group have raised a fighting fund and have appointed a publicity company that will develop a media campaign to pressure the government to reverse their decision. In addition the Victorian Coastal Council in conjunction with the Victorian Science Panel have written to the Minister expressing their disappointment with her decision and have also outlined in detail what they believe needs doing to fix the problem properly. With the knowledge that DELWP were going to meet with the Shire and brief them about their decision I encouraged the Shire to seek an independent report to peer review the Advisian report that the government is relying on. The Shire took my advise and engaged Water Technology and recently that report was tabled at council. I will add a link to this report for you all to read and I trust this may answer many of the ill informed comments that have been circulating from arm chair commentators within our community.
