25.01.2022 Now that Melbournians are finally easing our way out of lockdown, Ethyl has had the opportunity to get herself a colourful new outfit and flamboyant hairdo and is ready to start celebrating! Ethyl's unusual plant corset is made of tough living Echeveria elegans ‘Mexican Snowball’ and her tutu has been decorated using Mexican Tillandsias. 22.01.2022 If you haven’t been able to visit recently, the lockdown has allowed us add many new specimens, remove walls and upgrade our displays and collections.

17.01.2022 Amongst the many goodies that have been arriving over the past months we received some beautiful tumbled stones that are not only lovely to look at, but very relaxing and soothing to hold. Many different types of patterns and colours available :-)

16.01.2022 If anyone is wondering why we no longer sell variegated Neoregelia or Vriesias and our Stanhopeas are no longer on display the reason may have to do with a fire at one of our growing sites. Last Sunday night a fire which started on the road burned down 80 meters of our fence and took out one of my propagation houses. The most likely cause was from a cigarette butt thrown from a car, the high northerly winds that night would have fanned the embers and pushed the fire into the... nursery. We have lost all our stock Neoregelia variegates and our Vriesea variegate collection. All my large Vandas. My Stanhopea collection is seriously damaged but will recover in 2 to 3 years. Most of my propagation material and a lot of Peperomia stock plants were lost, maybe 50,000 plants. Being late in the evening in a rural area the fire was not noticed by anyone for maybe an hour, we are lucky it did not jump the internal wall into the larger area next door. The smoke fumes from all the burning plastic pots stored outside the house permeated the growing areas and our Tillandsia collections so we may expect a huge bromeliad flowering early next year. Fortunately this fire will have very little impact on Collectors Corner supply. Cant wait for 2020 to be over.

15.01.2022 I have been growing cacti commercially for over 40 years and the one plant we have grown more of than any single cactus is the Arizona Snowcap. We named it this as we received our original plants from Arizona Cactus Nursery in NSW in 1981. I have grown well over two million Snowcaps over this period and not seen a single mutation until last week when this little cutie turned up. We will watch this plant over the next year or so to see if the variegation remains stable, so ...far 4 offsets show the variegation, two are pure yellow and wont survive long, the other two show strong variegation and will survive on their own. Maybe in a couple of years we will have a few to sell.

14.01.2022 Our 2020 Gem Clearance is now open. Huge selections of Gems, Minerals and Fossils are heavily reduced up to 50%, we have brought in huge amounts of stock from storage and filled the shop with a huge selection of material. We have held this event for almost 25 years and this is probably the best selection ever offered. In addition to the heavily discounted items most stock on the floor stock will be discounted by 20% and some cabinet stock by 10%.... This year to avoid crowds and keep everyone Covid-Safe we are holding the clearance over 10 days instead of the usual 3 days. Lots of stock is being held back for release during the week so great items will be available thought the 10 days. To keep everyone safe we will be maintaining Covid-safe protocols including limiting the number of customers in the store at one time. 13.01.2022 Every year I grow hundreds of thousands of cacti seedlings so chances are some pretty cool mutations appear every now and then. This one was put aside by one of my staff when it was very small without a name and I just assumed it was a Mammillaria form but started to form this bud from the apical growing point which is very unusual for any cactus, the size and shape of the bud is also very unusual and it has a second bud appearing from the side. Hopefully today it will be open and I will have a better idea of what it may be. The flower looked very much like a Rebutia and I have now been informed by one of my staff it was a Rebutia kranziana. The flower has opened today and just like the plant the stamen are only partially formed and no stigma appears present.

12.01.2022 Amongst our ongoing changes over the past year or two you will find we have revamped our 'dry goods' section and increased our range of pots to include quite a few that have been designed and produced especially for us and are not sold elsewhere. :-) We also carry a wide assortment of glassware for making your own terrariums and of course we still carry loads of other useful things for the garden including fertilisers and potting media etc. If you need help, please ask our friendly staff who are always ready to assist with any questions you may have to get your plants at their best. 08.01.2022 Stolen from a secured location, most likely by an ex staff member from one of our wholesale gemstones businesses possibly 3 months ago. Me and my brother Tom operate a number of sites where we display our unique collections of plants, gemstones, fossils and other collectables, this piece was very special and unique, it was in storage at a secured location so its loss has only just been discovered. Pieces like this are exhibited by Tom at overseas gem shows and events and ...not at any of our retail locations Collectors Corner or Crystal World. $5000 reward offered for information and return of the specimen. 07.01.2022 A couple of additions to the collection. These are seedlings selected a few years ago that are starting to look stunning. The first is a Mammillaria Pico with three albino offsets.... The second is a Euphorbia enopla missing most of its green pigment as well as having a tight compact growth habit.

The Society Meets Bi monthly on the 4th Wednesday of every 2nd Month commencing Feb. each year. Meetings are held at Phoenix Park Community Centre, Rob Roy Rd, Malvern East.
