21.01.2022 This week's book recommendation is 'Trinity Without Hierarchy: Reclaiming Nicene Orthodoxy in Evangelical Theology'. Michael Bird and Scott Harrower collaborated as editors of this book which is dedicated to, and includes a chapter by, former Ridley Principal, Graham Cole. In this collection of trinitarian studies sixteen contributors present a defence of the full and equal authority and majesty of all three members of the Trinity.

21.01.2022 Donald Baker was the third principal of Ridley, and the only one who had previously been consecrated as a bishop. His tenure between 1937 and 1952 coincided with the Second World War and the difficult years of recovery in the 1940s and 1950s. Though born in England, he grew up in New Zealand, was educated in Cambridge, and served as a priest in parishes in Sydney and Hobart. He was elected as the Bishop of Bendigo in 1920, reinforcing a longstanding relationship between the college and the Bendigo diocese. His piety was exemplary and encouraging, so his reputation as a pastor and mentor eclipsed his reputation as an academic. He also served as Warden of the Deaconess Order from 1942 to 1953. In retirement, he continued to be active in ministry.

20.01.2022 If you've visited Ridley, you'll no doubt have been greeted by a friendly face in our Reception area in Wade Lodge. This building is named after Eustace Wade. Eustace Wade holds the record as Ridley’s longest-serving principal and is the first principal born in Australia. He led the College from 1917 to 1937 during the First World War, the Great Depression, and the rise of liberal evangelicalism in the Church of England. He was a minister in several churches in suburban Melb...ourne and rural Victoria before taking up the position at Ridley, where he faced significant challenges including securing the College’s finances, building an accommodation block, and defending Ridley's evangelical identity. Exhausted after nineteen years, he retired early but lived another thirty years before his death in1967. Eustace Wade was a faithful servant of Christ. See more

17.01.2022 Charles Perry was the first bishop of Melbourne (18471876). He arrived on The Stag just twelve years after European settlement bean in Melbourne. A Cambridge evangelical, he oversaw the organisation of Anglican ministry in the turbulent period of the gold rush, giving significant priority to the difficult task of recruiting clergy from Sydney and Britain for an expanding and increasingly prosperous colony. He helped to establish Trinity College at the University of Melbourne, and when he returned to England was involved in setting up Wycliffe Hall in Oxford, and Ridley Hall in Cambridge after which our Ridley College is named.

14.01.2022 This week's book recommendation: Is Jesus History? written by John Dickson. In this timely book, John unpacks how the field of history works, giving readers tools to evaluate for themselves what we can confidently say about such figures like Emperor Tiberius, Alexander the Great, Pontius Pilate, and, of course, Jesus of Nazareth.

11.01.2022 This is William Sadlier. When Ridley was founded in 1910, no principal could be found. So William Sadlier, a member of the College Council, was asked to serve as acting principal. An Irishman, he was ordained in Melbourne, then served in the Diocese of Bendigo where he was intentional about leadership training at Perry Hall. He became a canon at St Paul’s Cathedral when he was just thirty-four, and he led the nascent college while undertaking pastoral ministry at Christ Church St Kilda. In 1912, he was elected Bishop of Nelson in New Zealand.

11.01.2022 Stuart Barton Babbage was the first Ridley principal with a doctorate! He served for ten years from 1953 to 1963 and contributed to Ridley’s growing academic reputation with his historical and philosophical learning. He was appointed as Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral at the same time as he was appointed principal. During his tenure, he chaired the committee that formally invited Billy Graham to Australia for the famed 1959 Crusade. After Ridley he moved to Georgia to teach at Columbia Seminary where he aided Martin Luther King Jr in the civil rights movement. He then moved to Boston, where he took responsibility for merging Gordon and Conwell Colleges to form a new seminary. He was later the dean of the Australian College of Theology and received the honour of Member of the Order of Australia in 1995.
