24.01.2022 The nearby River Red Gums continued to be in full bloom although. Some trees had very few buds that were yet to open. Today, the main task was to ensure that there was sufficient space in honey supers for the bees to store additional honey. To achieve this 12 frames of 95% capped honey across the apiary was removed and replaced with empty frames. The removed frames were placed in plastic bags and frozen for two days to kill any wax moth and small hive beetle eggs. Honey will be extracted from them in the apiarys main honey harvest at the end of February.

22.01.2022 As part of the Collingwood Childrens Farms 40th anniversary celebrations, the apiary team delivered a "Bees and Beekeeping" presentation.

21.01.2022 The apiary is jointly managed by the VAA Melbourne Section beekeeping group and Collingwood Childrens Farm. Because of the corona virus pandemic and until further notice, the scheduled public openings of the apiary on the second and fourth Sundays of each month have been cancelled. email enquiries to [email protected]

17.01.2022 As part of the Collingwood Childrens Farm Apiarys annual honey harvest, excess honey was extracted from the apiarys two Flow hives.

16.01.2022 Visitors enjoy their first beekeeping experience while we - inspected hives that had recently been re-queened to determine whether or not the new marked queen is present and laying well. - assessed the size and health of the nucleus hives to determine when they will be ready to be collected. - assessed which hives are collecting nectar and accumulating honey and which need the addition of more frames to do so.

16.01.2022 For an upcoming Radio National program, two sound recordists from the ABC use a number of different microphones to capture the sounds of buzzing bees.

15.01.2022 As well as re-queening seven hives and checking for honey production, we also celebrated the Australian Pollinators Week.

13.01.2022 The following procedures were undertaken today: - Requeening of hives, including nucleus hives, that have been previously identified as requiring replacement of queens with those with quiet genetics. - Assessment of which full-size hives require requeening in the future.... - Assessment of which hives are collecting nectar and accumulating honey.

10.01.2022 The exceptionally prolific flowering of the River Red Gums is starting to bear fruit. Honey supers are quite heavy and most have a number of fully capped frames.

10.01.2022 Today we had even more fully capped honey frames than two weeks ago. Some hives had very little space left to store honey. To provide more space a total of nine frames were removed, stored in plastic bags and frozen for two days to kill any wax moth or small hive beetle eggs. (Six frames were collected the previous fortnight.)

09.01.2022 The following tasks were undertaken today: - Inspection of the hives that were Demareed 7 weeks and 5 weeks ago to make sure that there is sufficient laying space in their brood boxes. - (Two weeks ago the horizontal hive was split without finding the queen.) Today we inspected this hive and the nucleus that was created from it to find out which one received the original queen. It turned out to be the nucleus hive.... Assess which full size hives and which nucleus hives require requeening. If required, feed 2:1 sugar solution to the nucleus hives through entrance feeders.

09.01.2022 The Collingwood Childrens Farms registered kitchen was used to extract the honey from the apiarys honey frames.

08.01.2022 The wiring jig braces a wooden frame so that when wire is threaded onto the frame, the wire is tight when the brace is released. Tight wires on a wooden frame are essential to ensure that a sheet of wax foundation is properly attached to them. This popular workshop will be held again in Winter 2019.

07.01.2022 The following procedures were undertaken at the apiary today. - Inspection of hives that have recently been re-queened to determine whether or not the new marked queen is present and laying well. - Assessment of the size and health of the nucleus hives to determine when they will be ready to be collected. - Assessment of which hives are collecting nectar and accumulating honey and which need the addition of more frames to do so. - Two tourists from France filmed the bees and the beekeepers with the aim of making informative videos about bees and beekeeping.

04.01.2022 With most swarm prevention procedures already completed, todays hive activities focussed on assessing how much honey hives contained, particularly in supers that had previous been been brood boxes. The large amount of budding in nearby Red River Gums indicated that the apiary might produce a good amount of honey this season.

02.01.2022 While visiting the apiary to undertake swarm prevention procedures, we noticed a very large swarm on the ground at one end gf the apiary.

01.01.2022 Like the previous fortnight, todays inspections were focussed on inspecting the supers, including those to which a box from hive 2A had been added a fortnight ago.
