25.01.2022 Today the Brigade visited TFS Air Operations at Cambridge Aerodrome, it was awesome to see the firefighting aircraft that are on standby to assist with bushfires around the State. A big thanks to Ace, the pilots and crew at Air Ops for their sharing their knowledge of Aerial Firefighting with us.
24.01.2022 Always keep anything flammable at least two metres away from heaters or fireplaces to avoid them catching on fire.
23.01.2022 Delivering the news that someone's loved one has died in a crash is one of the hardest things we have to do. Speed limits exist for a reason. Obey the limit an...d help us keep everyone safe on our roads. Road safety is everyone's responsibility. #TrafficTuesday For further details see: https://www.police.tas.gov.au/emergency-services-road-safe/

22.01.2022 Collinsvale motorists are advised that a section of Collinsvale Road is currently closed at the Glenlusk end, while the Tasmania Fire Service remove a dangerous tree from across the roadway. Motorists are asked to avoid the area until the scene is cleared.
22.01.2022 Please be careful on the roads over the next few days. If the forecast is correct we may see snow and ice on the roads and the possibility of road closures.
22.01.2022 Tasmania Fire Service requests that landholders avoid lighting fires on their properties for at least the next 24 hours due to forecast severe weather condition...s. Fires in these windy conditions will be difficult to control. Fires that have been lit in the past fortnight should be patrolled as the wind increases, even if they are believed to be extinguished.

15.01.2022 What's your plan if you need to evacuate in an emergency? As the threat of COVID will be with us for some time, we all need to prepare a little differently to s...tay COVID-safe in the event of other emergencies that may impact us and our communities. Coordinating an evacuation during the pandemic carries extra risks of close physical contact and person-to-person transmission of the virus, not only to those evacuating but also to emergency services personnel and evacuation centre volunteers. Now's the time to review your personal bushfire or emergency plans and identify somewhere safe to go if you need to leave your home and evacuate to a safe place. Ask friends or relatives outside your area if you're able to stay with them. Think about when to leave and have a plan for when you’ll go and what you’ll take with you, and remember to encourage your neighbours, friends and family to do the same. And don’t forget to pack some masks or face coverings and hand sanitiser in your emergency kit, just in case. Keep safe, keep COVID-safe.
15.01.2022 Hazard icons across the country have a new consistent look. The new Australian Warning System introduces several changes to the way the community will be notifi...ed about hazards. We're rolling out the first stage of the changes to the Australian Warning System for bushfire in Tassie today. The changes will include the way bushfire warnings are displayed on the TFS website. From today, consistent colours will be used for: Advice (yellow), Watch and Act (orange); and Emergency Warning (red) The icon shapes will also change on maps from diamonds to triangles. While the colours and icons change, the meanings of the levels do not change. The changes are designed to bring consistency to the way warnings are displayed across Australia. Over time more states will use the new colours and icons and they will be used for other hazards like floods and storms. Further changes will occur in Tasmania in 2021, including enhancements to our warning messages. The Australian Warnings System is based on community research and good practice, in terms of what communities recognise and what gets people to take action during an emergency.

12.01.2022 This bushfire season we've added another tool to our armoury. This aerial observation platform is equipped with Special Intelligence Gathering technology that c...aptures video in true colour and infrared which is sent back to operations centres in near real-time, providing valuable intelligence to bushfire analysts and planners. It's a critical part of our lightning strategy, putting us hours ahead of the game in identifying new fires. It was also deployed last weekend in the north and north-west to assist Tasmania SES with their flood strategy.
11.01.2022 Tasmanian landholders will be better able to manage bushfire risk on their property with the launch of the expanded Red Hot Tips program - an initiative of the ...State Fire Management Council. The Program will create a greater understanding of bushfire risk and provide landholders of large properties with more access to advice which will increase their capability to manage longer term risk. Regional Facilitators can visit landholders to provide practical information on identifying bushfire risk, bushfire behaviour, fire management planning, burn plans, legal requirements for burns, mitigation strategies and ecological guidelines. The Program will also facilitate field days, workshops and look for opportunities for private and public landholders to work together on training and mentoring. 10.01.2022 The Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook has been released today. Tasmania is currently experiencing significant grassland growth while we are in an unusual ...rainfall pattern. These grasslands will dry out during January when we should expect fast moving grass fires to occur on days of fire danger. Even later into the season, heavy fuels and peat will be available to burn. We have seen a recent increase in escaped burns on private property which are burning into the night, which is an indication the fuels are drying out and the bushfire season is at our doorstep. The most important thing that Tasmanians can do now to prepare themselves for the upcoming season is to develop a 5-minute bushfire plan. We've launched a new online tool that can be accessed via www.fire.tas.gov.au and the Bushfire Why Risk It? campaign. The ‘5-minute bushfire plan’ in an easy to use online tool that allows people to run through a simple questionnaire to plan what they will do to keep themselves and everyone in their household safe in the event of a bushfire. 5 minutes is all it takes to give yourself the best chance of surviving a bushfire. The outlook is available here: https://www.bnhcrc.com.au/hazardnotes/85
09.01.2022 Tasmania’s newest remote area firefighters are being put through their paces learning how to work safely in and around aircraft. The first cohort of 30 volunte...ers that were selected through a recent Expressions of Interest process are now training to enhance the State’s specialist remote area firefighting capability. The training will be completed during the spring months, with the volunteers adding to the existing personnel in the TFS, PWS and Sustainable Timber Tasmania before the summer season. Remote area firefighters access difficult terrain by helicopter or on foot, and use special light weight pumps or hand tools to protect our iconic natural assets or to fight bushfires before they spread and impact our cities, towns and critical infrastructure.
08.01.2022 A winter fire safety tip from Firefighter Watene: Get your chimney or flue cleaned once a year by a professional. Having it cleaned will clear out the soot and other residue which can catch fire if it's left to build up over time.

04.01.2022 Fuel Reduction Burn - Glenorchy If you're in the Greater Hobart area, you'll see smoke coming from Goat Hills at the back of Glenorchy this weekend. We'll... have lots of resources on the ground from the Fuel Reduction Program to ensure the burn is appropriately managed. The Goat Hills burn will be around 155 hectares in total and will burn for the whole weekend. During burning operations public access to this area will be restricted. The public is asked to remain well out of the burn site while the burn is taking place and for the following days until safety checks have been made along tracks and trails. Please comply with directions from staff or any signs if you are in the area. This objective of this burn is to minimise the bushfire risk to life and property, particularly areas south of Glenorchy, including Hobart. It will serve to slow the spread of any fire from the Collinsvale Road area where fires have started in the past. The Goat Hills area also has significant infrastructure assets including a major communication tower and critical electricity transmission lines which will be protected by this burn. People with medical conditions are advised to have a personal plan for the smoke. Advice is available from the Department of Health and Asthma Australia websites: http://www.dhhs.tas.gov.au/publichealth//air/bushfire_smoke and https://asthma.org.au/about-asthma/triggers/bushfire-smoke.
