12.01.2022 TIP OF THE DAY - ALWAYS apply a minimum of 2 coats of good quality gesso to your canvas even though the canvas manufacturer may say "pre primed". Prior prepared-canvas manufacturers use the minimum amount of acrylic gesso required to provide a workable ground. Of course for them its cost effective to keep the gesso at a minimum. A wise artist will use at least a couple of additional coats of gesso to be sure that the canvas is fully primed. I ALWAYS apply a minimum of 2 coat...s of good quality gesso to my canvases even though the canvas manufacturer may say "pre primed". I was once told by a Distributor that the warehouse where the canvases are made often apply a thin coat of wax to the canvas surface so that it will not stick together when it is rolled. Oil painters should pay particular attention to priming as oil paints dry thru a process of oxidisation which can leave in-primed canvas prone to discintergration I dont like any NASTY surprises so I make sure I have my preparation covered.

09.01.2022 TIP OF THE DAY - A couple of drops of Retarder Medium in your water container will assist your painting on those very hot days slowing the drying time of your paint ever so slightly.

08.01.2022 TIP OF THE DAY - A lot of artists are choosing to paint onto specialist artist papers and recently I was asked why Titanium White paint appeared cream on their paper. The paper in question had been treated with an Optical Brightening Agent (OBA) which is usually based on bleach or chlorine which gives the paper a Blueish colour. Whilst this is a perfect choice for photocopies etc. it is not generally ideal for Artists. OBA treated papers can pose a serious threat to the integ...rity and longevity of a fine art by causing metamerism, which leads to colour shifts and by accelerating yellowing over time. Papers which have not been treated with an OBA are known as "optically dead" . The natural white colour, or optically dead papers, will remain consistent under different lighting conditions. So back to the Titanium White paint. When Titanium White is used on the natural white or "optically dead" papers it is completely or almost undetectable as it is the identical colour of the papers which have no OBA treatment. The choice is yours, but I know which one I would choose. See more

08.01.2022 TIP OF THE DAY - Aerial Perspective. Creating the illusion of depth on a flat surface the artists uses Warm colours in the foreground to bring subjects forward and Cool colours to recede subjects in the distance.
