20.01.2022 DRC: CLEAR COMMUNICATION AND IMPACTS ON SERVICE PROVISION FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY - 20/08/20 The Centre of Research Excellence in Disability and Health (see link below) is quickly building a body of work on the impacts of COVID-19 on people with disability and on the workers that support them, and making recommendations on what governments and others need to do in response. Professor Anne Kavanagh was questioned on this work and the Centres recommendations. She outlined r...isk factors for both people with disability and disability support workers and noted her concerns about the relatively slow responses by governments to implement measures to safeguard these people from the impacts of COVID. Prof Kavanagh indicated the NDIS Commission should have given stronger directives on what services should or should not have continued to be provided during the COVID crisis. She also expressed concern that the 10 per cent loading on some prices for NDIS services during the early days of the pandemic was a perverse incentive for providers to continue providing services that should have ceased. Inadequate communication for people with disability was a common concern raised during the course of the day, whether the information should have been in easy English, and/or in community languages or translated for First Nation peoples. The speed at which information was needed to flow was at times prioritised over accessibility and was noted as an area where improvements where needed. Across the last three days of the hearing, the challenge of keeping abreast of multiple information sources was raised by many speakers. These included access to PPE and the availability of training in its use, workforce, including the use of casual staff and staff working across more than one site or with more than one organisation, emergency response plans and the need to customise them for a pandemic, and movement restrictions and the impact on people with disability. http://ow.ly/7vMm50B54Ps See more

19.01.2022 121 Care 30 Years Strong It seems remarkable to think that almost 30 years ago it took two young men directly impacted by spinal injuries to create their own support services on the Sunshine Coast, so they could live independently with their families. In a sense not unlike some of the tech startups to follow, the idea started at home and was developed in the spare room and the garage. While it seems unfathomable in 2020 that once upon a time support services would need to be ...Continue reading

14.01.2022 LET’S (NOT) TALK ABOUT SEX! An interesting article from the guys at DSC on the subject of NDIS funding for Sex workers. The Federal Court decision found it reasonable and necessary for a woman with MS to use NDIS funds for sex therapy. The ruling should have paved the way for more NDIS participants to receive funding for sexual services. In reality, this is still next to impossible.
