24.01.2022 Have you met Gav? You should, he is a legend. Big Gav or The Gavinator can teach us all a thing or two about consistency, quiet perseverance, and training with the long term in mind. Gav started BJJ as an already active late 40 year old, but has worked consistently to avoid injury by improving his mobility and movement skills, alongside his technical BJJ game, all while giving back to the next gen in our kids classes. I don’t think he knows it, but Gav is a huge inspirat...ion to a lot of us. Name: Gavin Skinstad Rank: Purple Belt Time Training: 5 years (he didn't answer this, so I guessed for him ) Who are you?: I am a 51 year old dad to 2 amazing daughters, a husband to a wonderful wife, and do my best to keep up with the young guys on the mats. Why do you train BJJ?: I train BJJ for the amazing workout, the mental and physical stimulation, the incredible camaraderie, and all round good vibes. Favourite position?: Favorite position is always changing, but my favorite submission at the moment is side control to north south to the far side arm bar....(then why do you keep ankle locking me Gav? ) Pull or pass?: I prefer to pass, but unfortunately does not always come off.

Come along Saturday 8:15-9:30am to @combatroomaus for a fun women’s class that is about good training, genuine relationships, developing ourselves through BJJ, and supporting each other to work hard, train hard, and laugh harder. Get in touch to book your free trial class with us today. Shoot us a DM or follow the link in bio to book your first session.
21.01.2022 What goes up, must go down..so what goes back, must go forward? Revisiting our shoulder rolls this week, but this time looking at safely rolling forward over the shoulder. This movement is an important element in landing when we've been thrown by our partners, so practice slowly and smoothly on both sides. If in doubt, seek guidance from your coach, and start from your knees before moving on up to standing. When your shoulder rolls become comfortable and you can move through them with confidence, it opens up a world of possibilities in regards to movement. Have fun, move slow, and drill your positions.
21.01.2022 Have you met Sho? As one of the quietest killers on the mats, this is a man to know. Sho is both student + teacher here at Combat Room, teaching our No Gi 6am classes every Monday + Thursday, as well as 6:30pm Fundamentals No Gi on Wednesday. We respect + appreciate Sho's wealth of experience across disciplines, but also the good vibes, attitude to learning + training, + generosity in sharing it all. Get to know Sho a little bit more. ---------- "The very first reason I initi...ally started BJJ was as a part of MMA, and I was fascinated by Rickson Gracie with his charismatic appearance and states of mind like a Zen master. This made me dream that through BJJ one day I can be like him. At that time I had just graduated from uni where I studied Education and Language Teaching, and was planning to go to Brazil as a Japanese language teacher for Brazilians of Japanese descendants through the government's program. Things didn't go as I planned and ended up staying in Japan. I couldn't find a natural passion in BJJ so I was training a few months, stopping training for many months repeatedly. I remember one time when I decided to stop BJJ to find something I had natural passion for but then I had dreams of doing arm bars on someone for 5 nights in a row. July 2012, years after my last training, I decided to start training BJJ again from the beginning. At that time of starting BJJ again I was in Hawaii. 10 months later my visa was expiring, and I I had to leave to Japan. When I came to Australia in late 2014, I was always with my gi's that occupied half of my suitcase space and training. In 2019, I saw Combat Room's sign on the way to check a potential new job. Mitsudomoe logo made me curious enough to check out the dojo, now I am fortunate to lead classes to pass on my BJJ knowledge and train myself. The longer I train BJJ it makes me realize that higher belts are just a white belt who trains longer than actual white belts, and Rickson Gracie thing was an illusion. But it doesn't matter. I do BJJ and combat sports to out compete an inner enemy of mine." Follow Sho here @dashowtime
21.01.2022 Have you met Rhonda? If you have ever come to a class at @combatroomaus then you probably have! Rhonda is undoubtedly one of the most diligent and consistent students at the gym, helping out in kids classes, and always quick to lend a hand to new students. We are so grateful to have @rondi168 quiet determination, big heart, and experience on the mats. Let's meet Rhonda. Name: Rhonda Williams Rank: Brown Belt Time Training: 8 yrs all up ... Why do you train BJJ?: For the love of a phenomenal martial art! For the life skills, emotional and mental balance its brought me also. For the good vibes always! Favourite position?: No one favourite, but love a good intricate sweep. Pull or pass?: Both..take what i can get ;) If a genie granted you one wish, what would it be?: Worldwide love peace and good inspiration, to be really honest. Rhonda will be hosting a BJJ based Women's Self Defence Seminar to raise funds for Lifeline over the next couple of weekends. Get in touch with her to learn more, donate, or attend.
14.01.2022 Summer is in full swing, and that means SWEATY training. To make that a bit nicer for everyone, here is a reminder of our basic tips for better hygiene. *Before training: Take a shower before coming to training, and if not possible at a minimum wear deodorant. If coming from the beach, you will be sandier than you know, and if coming from a day of work, you will be stinkier than you know ;)... Hands and feet must be clean. Wash your hands with soap before and after training. Wear footwear on your way to training to ensure clean feet. Tie your hair back, cut your nails, remove all jewellery, and brush your teeth. Make sure your uniform is clean and dry, well fitted and doesn't have any loose patches, rips, or attachments that could injure your partner or damage the mats (zips, buttons, buckles etc). *At Training: Bring and use a towel at class. Avoid bringing food or chewing gum in the dojo, and keep it off the mats. Keep your gear in the cubby holes, just have what you need on the side of the mats - footwear, water bottle, towels. Wear your footwear when walking outside of matted areas. If using the bathroom, footwear is a must. *After Training: Clean the mats or any area within the dojo you have used - even if you are the only person to use them, it is your responsibility to clean them. Before leaving make sure you have everything you came with. Don’t leave behind used uniforms or sweaty towels, I promise there is no washing fairy that will take care of it. Promptly wash your uniform after every training session. Promptly shower after every training session. Don’t forget as well team, if you have any signs or symptoms of being sick, then stay home, rest up, and train better sooner. Same goes for any open cuts, skin conditions, or infections - some things are better not shared. We can all enjoy training together more by following these simple hygiene tips, while also encouraging healthier habits on and off the mats, and showing respect for ourselves, our training partners and our dojo.
14.01.2022 Last weekend we had the pleasure of grading some long time and some newer members of the @combatroomaus team. Big congratulations to those who graded, and many thanks to those who supported. Gradings provide a wonderful chance to reflect on and be grateful for all of our members past and present, for the support in this wild year, but also over the many years of training and teaching. We spend so much time looking and moving forward, that it is easy to forget the journey th...at has been, and the many people who have been a part of it. Today we send our gratitude out to all those who have been a part of the journey, and we make space for those yet to be a part of it. Sending love and recognition to our whanau back home as well @combatroombjj @combatroombjj_miramar @two_tides_bjj @combat_room_palmerston_north
11.01.2022 Injury prevention in BJJ comes about through a number of ways, body preparation is one of them. Here at Combat Room we try to build that into our training schedule each week with our JHAM class on Thursday at 5:30pm with Coach Claudia Borsini Why do our JHAM - Joint Health and Mobility - Class? JHAM training results in joints that have more options available to execute a movement. The strength & control you develop in these previously inaccessible joint ranges will signific...antly improve your performance. This type of training is demanding & quickly highlights your areas of weakness. The body can’t express movement patterns that the brain doesn’t know about. It’s the magic of neuroplasticity folks. JHAM trains the brain to allow the body to have more options, and be better equipped to deal with forces or load at end joint ranges. With training repetition & consistency these new ranges become integrated & intuitive. Let’s be honest, we are not all natural pretzels with Arnie like strength, so we could probably all benefit from a little focus on our joint health. We’ll be seeing those of you who are keen to train for a long time, a good time, and those keen to accelerate your movement and BJJ prowess on the mats each Thursday at 5:30pm.
11.01.2022 Shout out to @sarahthesmartarse from @traininggroundsdrummoyne for bringing her Womens Crew to the mats this last Sunday for some rolls and sharing of good vibes. With a new appreciation for air conditioning due to over 40 degree temps in Sydney, thanks @traininggrounds for hosting our sweaty selves. With all the restrictions this year, getting together was such an awesome reminder of the importance of community and fostering connections between us. Looking beyond being from different teams, we are all on the mats, we are all practicing BJJ, we are all there to train, learn, and improve ourselves. Doing this together, on a 40 degree Sunday, in amongst the wildness of 2020, was just rad. Thanks @franbavaro for rolling along too!
09.01.2022 Continuing the series on our club values, we talked about RESPECT and COMPASSION a while back, and today we look at; --------COURAGE-------- Courage is a positive relationship to fear. We all have two potential sides to ourselves, light and dark, love and fear, good and evil...every action we take feeds one side or the other. ... Courage is feeling the fear and taking the action you know is needed. Cowardice is feeling the fear and NOT taking the action. By hoping to avoid the problem rather than face it will most likely lead to mental and physical distress and degeneration. By practicing courage we grow stronger, more resilient and allow ourselves the opportunity to overcome any obstacle or problem that comes our way in life. When we embody courage in our daily life and it becomes a part of our character we will make the right choices even if they are difficult because we know they will benefit us or our loved ones and community in a positive way.

06.01.2022 Let us introduce the idea of self care Christmas. This year has been a wild ride, and no doubt we are all feeling the effects. With the final push until summer holidays, work deadlines, things to organise, parties to attend, obligations to meet, December can seem like a month in hyper drive. It may feel like there is no time to be tired, but now is the time to stop, check in with yourself, check in with others, and reflect on the truly important things in life to you. To tur...n up for others over this time, you need to be healthy and happy within yourself. Taking time for yourself and giving yourself what you need, so that you can support others, is ok. Be aware of what you are consuming; your diet is not just what you eat and drink, but what you watch, listen to, read, how you spend your time, the people around you, and how you breathe. This may be the time for training and rolling or this may be the time to sit in the sunshine, sit with a loved one, close your eyes, and breathe slowly. Today, you’ll find us doing both, and we encourage you to do that which will serve you most. We would love to hear your strategies for dealing with stress and self care practices; what are your methods for chilling out and filling your cup over this or any season?
