11.01.2022 Discussion Point Hard hats as opposed to helmets In Australia we have AS 1801 Occupational protective helmets, which in itself is a bit confusing, as this Standard specifies requirements for occupational protective helmets to protect wearer’s heads from falling objects in building and construction , quarrying, shipbuilding, forestry and other occupations with similar hazards. These requirements include the construction and materials of the helmet shell and head harness, me...chanical strength of the shell and finish of the helmet. As we can see from the scope above, this is falling object protection, but does not provide for any side impact or back of the head protection in worker falling, These hard hats have no chin straps or a loose fitting chin straps which will not hold the hard hat in place. You would never dream of using a hard hat as head protection while riding a push bike, why do we use falling object protection when we can fall and hit our head? As a Paramedic in the early 80s we gathered statistics for the legislators on push bike riders knocked off push bikes, those statistics revealed that the vast majorities of push bike riders die from head injuries. These statistics brought forward legislation for the mandatory use of helmets for push bike riders. In the first 2 years after the new law we had a 48% decrease in death from push bike accidents. In heights falls 57% die from less than 3 metres falls, up to 90% of people die from head injuries, primarily from temporal lobe injuries from side impact to the head. It is therefore obvious that the risk falls from a low level would be dramatically reduced by the use of a side and back impact protection helmet. There are many climbing helmets on the market produced to EN 397 Industrial helmets and EN 12492 helmets for mountaineers these provide good head protection in falls and falling object protection, but are not certified to AS1801 and are therefore are not allowed on most worksite even though they have equivalent EN standard and by far safer where the risk is head injury from the worker falling. There now are helmets that are AS 1801 as well as EN 397 and EN 12492 i.e Kask ( who make push bike helmets), Skylotec and soon Petzl. WE need to risk assess the work to be completed and where the appropriate head protection which would make the As Low As Reasonably Practicable. See more
