23.01.2022 Steps to a good clean out
20.01.2022 The only sure things in life are death, taxes and change. I started my career as a business education teacher and in my first year I was teaching typing on electric typewriters - I remember the ‘invention’ of the internet and going to professional development sessions on how to use this new technology in the classroom. Since then the internet and other technologies have profoundly changed the world we live in. I often wonder what my much-loved grandparents would make of t...he world today if they were still alive. Of course, change has always happened; the difference now is the pace of change is so fast it can make you head spin. If change is constant and it is going to happen with or without our input then we need to look at what we can control - our attitude. When I am overwhelmed a wise friend often tells me to ‘lean in’. Her analogy is when you are swimming in the surf and all is churning around, you can stand still and get pushed around, dumped and get sand in your togs or you can lean in to the wave. Leaning in involves looking at the horizon, seeing the wave (change) and doing what you can to be ready for it. Even if you are leaning in you will sometimes get dumped (change sometimes hurts) but at least you will meet it head on and on your terms. Lean in to life. Look up, see change, prepare for it, embrace it if you can. Don’t let the wave catch you unawares as then you may get pushed around and lose your footing and there is nothing worse than getting sand in your togs.
19.01.2022 Modern life is a series of paradoxes: we are often told that we’ll be happier if we get out and do more, but we’re also told to take time to relax. We’re told we’ll find love when we least expect it, but also told that we won’t find it is we don’t put ourselves out there. Paradoxes exists everywhere in our society: There are big movements to tackle climate change; however, we consume and buy more than ever and manufacturing adds to the greenhouse problem We have made... vast steps forward to recognise people’s right to be who they are and to love whoever they love yet with the anonymity of social media people post the most vitriolic things about others and their choices We are so very image conscious yet, as a society, we are unhealthier than ever We post photos of ‘perfect’ lives yet don’t take the time to work on our relationships or organise our existence. We have more ‘friends’ yet less connection. Anyone else confused? W: comemonday.net.au M: 0414 576 230 E: [email protected]
19.01.2022 Try not to resent things hurting or not being able to see. Getting older can be frustrating but you are still so lucky to be here!

17.01.2022 Hardwork illustrates people's character...which one are you?
16.01.2022 I learnt something watching Instinct (it is a great show give it a watch if you get a chance). Instinct referenced the work of Harvard Professor Svetlana Boyn who has determined that there are two types of nostalgia reflective and restorative. Reflective nostalgia is looking back fondly (and sometimes longingly) at the good old days. This is the sort of nostalgia that sees us pulling out the old photo albums and reminiscing about past holidays, family gatherings or mile...stone events. This reflective nostalgia is good for us - we can enjoy our memories, however bittersweet, and the move on with our lives. In contrast, restorative nostalgia makes people want to cling to these times and keep everything as it was -essentially it makes us want to stay in the past. This is when we take down the photo albums and resent the passing of time. Restorative nostalgia makes us dissatisfied with our present, regretful of our decisions and depressed about our future. Looking back to past times is a useful process: who we are is the culmination of our past decisions, relationships and experiences. But we need to make sure we are looking back with appreciation for what has gone before rather than a desire to return to the past. All the nostalgia and backward glancing in the world is not going to stop the world changing. Look at change as an opportunity, a challenge and a chance to grow. Keep your head up, look to the future, and the joy will find you. W: comemonday.net.au M: 0414 5769 230 E: [email protected]
15.01.2022 Nothing like a clean up to start the new year...
09.01.2022 Is it just me or is most advertising involving older people just awful? My business is about helping people who are making big life changes. As a result, I see a lot of marketing material aimed at older Australians. I’ve noticed that a lot of the photos used to advertise retirement communities and residential aged care facilities are just horrendous. They are all of people getting a cup of tea and a pat on the shoulder from what I assume is meant to be a care-giver. I ac...knowledge it is hard to capture in a photo the excellent work that a lot of places are doing but why do all photos of older people have to be so vaguely pitying and naff? Some people need care absolutely and my hat goes off to all those men and women who provide this care. What you do makes a massive difference to a lot of people every day. Thank you for your care, compassion and humour. But for a lot of people the reality of retirement is very different. I often go to visit my mum and she is doing headstands in the lounge room (yoga is great!). My uncle and father still ride their bikes, run, play golf and lead a very active life. A friend of my parents recently did the Hawaii Iron Man. This event involves a 5 km swim, 140 km bike ride and 42 km run. It took him over 12 hours. He is 71. Once you finish work there is a lot of time and how you use it is up to you. A friend once told me you get busy living or get busy dying. Use your retirement years to volunteer, tackle new challenges, or learn new skills. There is only one rule don’t sit still. W: comemonday.net.au M: 0414 5769 230 E: [email protected]
08.01.2022 A photo wall is a great way to display all those memories!
