20.01.2022 At the time of the 9/11 attacks I had just clocked up 9 months as the Operations Manager, Counter Terrorism First Response at Sydney Airport. I will never forget receiving the phone call, watching the footage and then listening to the coverage as I headed in to work. The commentary as the towers came down, knowing how many occupants and first responders would still be inside, was beyond gut wrenching. Amazing courage and sacrifice shown by so many. Lest we forget.

WINDS AND SURF ALONG THE COASTAL DISTRICTS A trough along the New South Wales coast, together with multiple low centres within the trough, are bringing increased winds and surf along the southern and central parts of the coast. The areas of winds and surf should shift to the northern coast on Monday as the system heads north. DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with gusts in excess of 90 km/h, are currently occurring about the Illawarra and Sydney coast,and forecast to extend to the Hunter coast this morning, before extending to the Mid North Coast in the afternoon. DAMAGING SURF, with waves exceeding 5 metres in the surf zone, may lead to significant beach erosion along coastal parts of the Illawarra, Sydney and Hunter coast this morning, and forecast to extend further north to Smoky Cape this afternoon. Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas. Surf conditions should ease in the south later Monday, but hazardous surf conditions should persist until Tuesday. In conjunction with DAMAGING SURF, a Hazardous Surf Warning is also current. COASTAL WINDS AND SURF TO INCREASE A trough along the New South Wales coast is deepening with multiple low centres developing within the trough. This system is currently bringing widespread rain to the Illawarra coast and adjacent ranges, and is set to bring increased winds and surf along the coast from this afternoon as one of the low centres make landfall. HEAVY RAINFALL, which is leading to RIVERINE FLOODING, is forecast to continue for the Illawarra, northern half of the South Coast, and eastern parts of the and Southern Tablelands districts today. The areas of heavy falls may extend to the Sydney Metropolitan area and the Hunter Coast late this afternoon or tonight depending on the position and the movement of the lows. Thunderstorms embedded in the rain or any development of a small scale low within the trough may exacerbate the rain rate leading to FLASH FLOODING. The rain should ease around late this evening as the trough starts to move northwards later tonight or early Monday. In addition to his 41 years of service with the NSW SES, Graeme retired from NSW Ambulance in 2018 after 32 years service with the rank of Inspector. On top of his other commitments Graeme is a board member with The Newcastle Beacon, a not for profit organisation dedicated to assisting serving and former members of the Australian Defence Force, Police, Emergency Service Organisations and Corrections. 09.01.2022 Showcasing another aspect of recent storm and flood operations on the NSW South Coast and the truly multi-agency approach that is second nature in contemporary emergency operations. Michelle is the Local Commander for Sapphire Coast which incorporates the NSW SES Units at Bega, Bermagui and Eden. In addition to her command role she is a qualified Level 2 Incident Controller; General Land Rescue, Vertical Rescue and In-Water Flood Rescue Operator; and boat operator. Michelle is one of thousands of amazing volunteers who give their time to serve their communities in times of need.

This can have equally serious consequences such as inducing a heart attack in someone who has a heart condition. Between 2003-2016 SafeWork Australia recorded the deaths of 47 emergency service members while on duty. Since then we have lost several more, including firefighters during the last bu...shfire season and the four Victoria Police officers tragically killed in April. 01.01.2022 Incredibly proud of the NSW SES volunteers and staff supporting communities impacted by the recent weather event. More than 3,400 calls for assistance were received across the state resulting in over 2,100 jobs including 41 flood rescues. The attached photos give an indication of the conditions faced by our members and colleagues from across the emergency management sector.
