23.01.2022 Commatters is committed to supporting Top End families who care for those with additional needs. Following some discussions with local families, we are hoping to host a number of events. These include: a relaxed get together for special needs families to connect with one another, a group for families to connect who have children with less common diagnosis and some education sessions. We recognise everyone leads busy lives and would like to make these events as accessible as possible. Please comment below, DM or email [email protected] and let us know what day/time suits you best (weekday evening, weekends - day/evening). We look forward to hearing from you! #topend #specialneeds #support #education #darwin #palmerston #ndis #commatters Photo courtesy of Darwin Trailer Boat Club

21.01.2022 #repost Speech Pathology Australia Today, 3 March, is World Hearing Day. Speech Pathology Australia welcomes the launch of the first-ever World Report on Hearing. The theme in 2021 is Hearing care for ALL! Screen. Rehabilitate. Communicate. As a member of the International Communication Project we understand that good hearing and communication are important at all stages of life. The number of people living with unaddressed hearing loss and ear diseases is unacceptable. We hope that World Hearing Day 2021 will be a massive call to action. #WorldHearingDay #hearingcare #deaf #deafness #SpeakUp4CommRights #signlanguage #StandUp4HumanRights

20.01.2022 Many people under estimate the role positioning plays during meal times. It’s important to ensure your little one has good postural stability to make their mealtimes more effective and efficient. Your little ones hips, knees and ankles should all be at 90 degrees. Their feet should be on a foot rest. If your highchair doesn’t have one, make one out of books or other items around the home. The surface of the table/tray should fall between your little ones belly button an...d chest. And yes you are right...this little one isn’t positioned optimally!! Good postural stability provides your little one with a sense of security within the seating arrangement, better hand to mouth coordination and fine motor manipulation of foods as well as range of motion in the jaw for chewing of more difficult textures. #speechpathology #speechtherapy #speechpathologist #speechlanguagepathologist #feeding #mealtimes #fussyeating #pickyeating #toddler #autism #asd #ndis #palmerston #darwin #commatters

20.01.2022 The Division of Responsibility in Feeding is a feeding philosophy developed by Ellyn Satter. This philosophy can be applied across the age range, from infants to teens. By adopting the Division of Responsibility in Feeding, it can help take the stress and frustration away from family mealtimes. As a parent or carer, it is your responsibility to decide:... * WHAT food is being served * WHERE the food will be served (after transition to solids) * WHEN the food will be served (after transition to solids) It is the child's responsibility is to decide: * IF they are eating * HOW MUCH they are eating Using this philosophy, children learn to eat what their body needs. It sets your child up to trust themselves and listen to their body when it comes to food choices. It also takes the pressure off you as a parent, as you are not responsible for getting your child to eat anything specific. It's also important to remember that often our fussy or restricted eaters have underlying medical, sensory or oral-motor challenges which require the additional support of a speech pathologist or occupational therapist to facilitate their engagement with meal times. #speechpathologist #speechpathology #speechie #feeding #feedingtherapy #fussyeaters #DOR #ASD #autism #sensory #earlyintervention #palmerston #NT #commatters

15.01.2022 100% - we need to look beyond the behaviour and figure out what children are trying to communicate.

14.01.2022 This is a common question asked by parents and carers when exploring Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) options to support their child’s communication. While there are many factors which can influence a child’s ability to learn and use spoken language, use of an AAC system does not stop a child from learning or using spoken language. The evidence tells us that use of an AAC system can in fact support spoken language by increasing opportunities for interaction, ...using language skills and providing a model for speech (Millar et al, 2006 and Schlosser & Wendt, 2008). There are many different AAC systems available including; PODD books (as pictured) speech generating applications on iPads and eye gaze devices. It’s important to discuss with a speech language pathologist what may be the best AAC system for your child and for a full assessment/device trial to be conducted. This will help to ensure the most appropriate system is selected to support your child to develop communicative competence. #speechpathology #speechtherapy #speechpathologist #slp #speechie #aac #communication #podd #complexcommunicationneeds #NDIS #darwin #palmerston #NT #commatters

14.01.2022 Today marks International Literacy Day, and the theme for this year is Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. It is an important op...portunity to reflect on the existing inequity in our education system, with ever-widening learning gaps between students of different backgrounds. This is particularly true of our very remote Indigenous communities, where year nine Indigenous students can be 7 to 8 years behind in writing. All evidence tells us that literacy is one of the most important indicators of future health, wellbeing and prosperity. Literacy is the pathway to accessing education, employment and enjoying a healthy and happy life. Please stand with us and donate now to make literacy a reality for all Australians: alnf.org/donate/

14.01.2022 WELCOME TO THE TEAM! I am very excited to have Amanda joining Commatters Speech Therapy. Amanda will be working behind the scenes in administration and book keeping (so this frees me up to get back to the clinical work which I love!). Amanda has a background in customer service and management. She also has lived experience working with children who have additional needs - she is in fact Aunty to my boys and her eldest was born with a submucous cleft (now repaired). ... You can expect to "see" her around (more likely hear from her as she is joining remotely from NSW) over the next couple of weeks. 13.01.2022 Visuals are a really useful tool to help manage anxiety, expectations and transitions between tasks. They are also helpful for our clients on the autism spectrum or with language disorders as they provide a concrete representation of words/labels. I’ve spent my afternoon organising my visuals pack I purchased from @speechpathologyresources TpT site. Developing visuals for all my clinic resources has been on my to do list for what seems like forever! But I simply never have t...he time. This pack is truly a lifesaver for busy clinicians. Tomorrow’s job is to make a few additions to add to the different categories. 12.01.2022 For our anxious ‘fussy’ eaters, it’s really important we make our feeding therapy sessions FUN! Whether that be the games we are playing or utensils we are using. I found these cute little knives at House @gateway.nt . They are a fun design with an easy grip handle and stainless steel blade. They are recommended to be used to cut up soft fruit and vegetables . A great way to engage and explore foods which are less preferred. I cannot wait to use them once sessions res...ume in 2021! 11.01.2022 THE READING ROPE - This image depicts ‘The Reading Rope’. A term coined by psychologist Dr Hollis Scarborough to highlight how efficient reading requires the reader to use a range of skills which are intricately linked. Efficient reading requires language comprehension strands - understanding of grammar, vocabulary, semantics and verbal reasoning. It also requires word recognition strands - awareness of the sound structure of words, letter to sound correspondence and recogn...ition of familiar words. If a reader is struggling with a particular skill which forms one of the strands, this can impact their overall ability to decode and comprehend written information. Speech Pathologists play a crucial role in identifying and supporting readers to develop their language and/or reading skills. Scarborough, H. (2001 Connecting early language and literacy to later reading (dis)abilities: Evidence, theory and practice. In S. Newman & D. Dickinson (Eds.), Handbook of Early Literacy Research.pp. 97-110. 10.01.2022 Sounds-Write is an evidence based phonics program that teaches how the sounds of our language system are represented in writing. It incorporates the crucial skills of segmenting, blending and phoneme manipulation into each unit. 09.01.2022 Do not underestimate the power you have as a parent/carer to support your child on their journey! This is a direct quote taken from Autism CRC's most recent publication "Interventions for children on the autism spectrum: A synthesis of research evidence". Active caregiver involvement in intervention was reported to have SIMILAR or at times GREATER intervention effects when compared to intervention delivered only by clinicians or educators. You and your Speech Pathologist are... a team who are working together to support your child to achieve their communication/feeding goals. Parent coaching and the integration of strategies and skill development opportunities into your daily routine is so important. This will help your child carry over gains in communication/feeding into their home environment as well as other settings. 06.01.2022 It’s important to provide our families with strategies to support skill development while carrying out their daily routines. Quite simply another job on the to do list can just seem too much! Christmas is often a very busy time and many families will be in the kitchen prepping food for a Christmas feast. Keeping this in mind we wanted to offer some ideas on how to support your child’s language development while cooking together: practice labelling food and items you ...would find in the kitchen e.g. we can use this big knife to chop the carrots. use verbs to describe what you are doing e.g. I’m doing to MIX the cake batter. 1 use quantifiers to describe the quantity of an object e.g. we need SOME milk. discuss the sequence of events e.g. FIRST we will...THEN we need to... practice following instructions e.g. can you find the eggs? Today I’ve got my kids in the kitchen helping make Nutella cheesecake for Christmas Day, what are you cooking?#speechpathology #speechtherapy #speechpathologist #speechie #slp #kidsinthekitchen #cooking #language #development #teaching #earlyintervention #darwin #palmerston #NT #commatters

04.01.2022 Quick trip to Adelaide River today for a language assessment. The longer than usual drive gave me the opportunity to multi task and complete some PD. 03.01.2022 RESOURCE SHARE - Understanding emotions and reading non verbal cues can be tricky for some kids, especially those on the autism spectrum. I found this ‘How and I feeling?’ game at Kmart. It could be used to teach emotions vocabulary, practice reading non verbal cues and identifying scenarios where you may have experienced a specific emotion. ... To teach and reinforce the reading of non verbal cues, it’s really important to talk about how our body may ‘show’ that emotion e.g. facial expression, posture, gesture. #speechpathology #speechie #SLP #SP #pragmatics #socialcommunication #emotions #NT #topend #commatters
