13.01.2022 Incase people were wondering where we got to last week at the salty tackle box, We needed some fishing time too! With the weather favorable the destination of I...nnisfail was chosen as a starting point for a Commercial deep drop fishing session. While the weather wasn't as good as we expected when we arrived 2 days later we quickly assessed the viability and decided if nothing else we could idle around mapping the waters to the east for future trips. We loaded the boat with Ice and fueled up along with added jerry cans for a extended range. For the first day we ran over some ground in around 70m of water while idling out at 6 knots, we quickly set up a drift and the fish were quick to take the baits, after we decided we had taken enough fish we quickly motored on to look for more types of spots on the way out, with these small areas its imperative to "Farm" them for future fishing sessions and to give them a good break between fishing them for future fish stocks to recover. Along the way we found a few more such places and quickly took a basket of fish off each mark while looking for the next, we found a nice area to anchor in for the night behind the reef and listened to the wind howl past the aerial for most of the night. We awoke to snotty conditions in the morning and quickly decided to look for a few coral trout, RTE, Parrot and hussar behind the reef while we waited for the conditions to abate, about 9am the wind dropped enough and by 12pm the seas has started to settle, we set off for 200-450m of water in search of new deep drop ground, we continued to map throughout the day looking for inconspicuous spots that we believe hadn't seen much fishing pressure. About 11 pm that night we found just the spot, while it was dark and we sounded the area thoroughly looking for other seafloor features which were non existent, Knowing that this rock was a very secluded spot we knew on previous experience in the area that we were going to be in for a good session on bar cod, Bass grouper and the likes if we could get them to bite We headed in for a sleep once agian behind the reef as the wind was starting to howl solid 25knts and the seas had picked up, which made the travel very uncomfortable in the 6.8m plate boat. The following morning the seas had abated and the wind was about 10knts, We quickly made our way out to the spot we had previously sounded and dropped our Salty tackle deep drop rigs baited with whole cuttlefish which were pounced upon in Innisfail Bar cod fashion, We fished the isolated rock for about an hour before we decided we had taken enough cod and left the area to recuperate for future trips, We sounded the rest of the day which was pretty quiet in regards to areas that aren't obvious. We decided we were running low on fuel and headed in back to the ramp, On completion of the trip we had used 897L of the 900L fuel we had taken out. During the trip we exclusively used our own in store built deep rigs which really worked well. We also used #Blackmagic leader on most of our rigs we fished with. 04.01.2022 Just a quick Post... With the bad weather experienced in SEQ the past week, We decided to go further north in search of new fishing ground, The first two days w...ere spent exploring North of Gladstone on the back side of the Swain Reef, the particular area we decided to explore was known trawl ground and flat country, So we were in hope of finding a couple of quality isolated bommies and rubble patches. For the most part we found lots of desert as expected. We did however find a few new potential spots, With the fishing being slow we managed a few quality fish off the few spots we did manage to find, We are however keen to explore them once again in the near future when the barometer and fishing improves. On the third day we hopped down to Breaksea in an attempt to explore the area, However conditions had deteriorated and made fishing impossible, which is often the case with this area. We did 3 days sounding and mapping, with the first two days being glamour weather, the third day being very limited with weather and tide however. Over the course of 3 days we covered in excess of 800 km in our Honda powered trailer boat and the engine performed flawlessly. We did manage some nice Pearl Perch on our deep drop rigs kitted out with the BFG Grubs, Interesting note that they were not keen on our mullet strips, Pilchard and Squid But quite willing to engulf these massive grubs on the bottom hook.
