25.01.2022 Ahead of the premiere of FREEMAN on Sunday 13 September ABC TV + iview which recounts the incredible story of Cathy Freemans (Cathy Freeman Foundation) gold medal winning 400m race at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, we have a final preview of the film. This preview of the film is a look back to another significant moment in Australian sporting history, this time at the Victoria 1994 Commonwealth Games when Cathy Freeman won the 400m race and celebrated by carrying both the Abor...iginal and Australian flags on her victory lap of the stadium. It was a moment that divided opinion, both in the team and in Australian society, and caused debate and controversy, a controversy that then Prime Minister Paul Keating even weighed into. But through it all Cathy kept a dignified silence, telling friends she carried both flags to show her elation in what was probably the most significant moment of her life to that point. Special thanks to the Commonwealth Games Federation and and to General Strike (https://www.generalstrike.com.au/) and Matchbox Pictures for the preview vision. Make sure you watch FREEMAN on ABC TV + iview Sunday 13 September from 7:40pm AEST. #FREEMANthefilm #FreemanABC #CathyFreeman #CommonwealthGamesHistory See more

03.01.2022 This week commemorates the First Commonwealth Paraplegic Games which were held in Perth, Western Australia from 10 to 17 November 1962. The connection and eventual partnership between Para-sports, Australian Paralympic Team and the Commonwealth Games occurred in three stages over 40 years. Sports included in the program were archery, Dartchery (a combination of darts and archery), athletics, swimming, weightlifting, pentathlon, fencing, snooker, basketball and table tennis.... Not commonly known, but between 1962 and 1974, four British Commonwealth Paraplegic Games (BCPG) were held immediately before or after the British Empire Commonwealth Games, three times in the same city of the Games and once nearby. The Games were the initiative of an Australian George Bedbrook who was director of the Spinal Unit of Royal Perth Hospital. Two years after the first Royal Perth Hospital Games in 1954, Bedbrook was encouraged to organise para sport in Australia and by 1959, the Paraplegic Association of WA began to promote the 1962 Paraplegic Empire Games. The 1962 British Commonwealth Paraplegic Games were held over eight days, nine nations and 93 athletes competed, with Australia topping the medal table with 38 gold and 90 medals total. Sports included on the sport program were archery, Dartchery (a combination of darts and archery), athletics, swimming, weightlifting, pentathlon, fencing, snooker, basketball and table tennis. The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will feature the biggest Para-sport program in Commonwealth Games Federation Games history, thanks to trailblazers and pioneers like the athletes who competed at these Games.
