22.01.2022 Yesterday, I spoke about strip searching of children and young people in Tasmania on Tasmania Talks. The Government has accepted my recommendations regarding the searches of children and young people in custody in this state. However, I remain concerned at the proportion of children being strip searched, particularly Aboriginal children and I am continuing to monitor the situation. Listen to the interview here:... https://www.tasmaniatalks.com.au//50764-tasmanian-governme See more

22.01.2022 Did you miss the National Child Protection Week webinar, Rhetoric to Reality? You can watch it now! I was delighted to be a panel member along with Helen Connolly, Commissioner for Children and Young People, SA Judge Andrew Becroft, Childrens Commissioner NZ and Janet Schorer, NSW Childrens Guardian. Some of the questions we addressed were:... - How do we, as Commissioners, put kids first? - What does good practice look like? - What are the fundamental things that we can all do? This was a great session and anyone interested in Commissioners for Children and Young People's work and the rights of children should take a listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbSH-ypTMmg

20.01.2022 Have your say and help shape Tasmania's renewable energy policy! In a fantastic initiative that I hope will be emulated by other organisations, young Tasmanians are being given the opportunity to have their views considered in the drafting of Tasmanian's Renewable Energy Action Plan (TREAP). Today, the Government released a child friendly version of the draft TREAP so young Tasmanians can learn about the proposed policy and provide feedback - so that they too can shape Tasma...nia's renewable energy future. I really encourage young people to take advantage of opportunities like this to have your views heard. You can view the Governments draft Renewable Energy Action Plan at https://www.stategrowth.tas.gov.au/CCYPrenewables and provide your feedback on it by completing a short survey at: https://www.surveygizmo.com//5839970/CCYP-Renewables-Have- #HearMyVoiceTas

20.01.2022 I welcome the Tasmanian Governments acceptance of my recommendations regarding the searches of children and young people in custody in Tasmania. It's pleasing that numbers of strip searches are declining as a result, However, I remain concerned at the proportion of children being strip searched, particularly Aboriginal children and I am continuing to monitor the situation. The full implementation of my recommendations will require legislative change. I have been advised the...re is work underway to develop the legislative and other reforms. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to this process. Read my media release: https://www.childcomm.tas.gov.au//CCYP-Media-Strip-Search-

19.01.2022 I was thrilled to award Hiba Farrukh from Margate Primary with the 2020 Commissioner for Children and Young People's Young Archies Award for her beautiful piece entitled 'Mama'. In making my decision, I select a piece of work that demonstrates the importance of children and young people having a say on things that are important to them. It's a really tough decision as all the works submitted to the Young Archies Portrait are really incredible. Hibas work talked about the imp...ortance of her mama to her learning and its also a bright colourful depiction of her mum, which shows great artistic talent! The Young Archies travelling exhibition is now on display at the Hobart Library until 19 September. Don't miss out!
