21.01.2022 If you're feeling overwhelmed by the world's climate challenge, this doco by Craig Reucassel (who also made 'War on Waste') explores tangible ways we can all tackle the problem and save planet A! First ep screened last night on ABC Australia, but you can catch up here:
20.01.2022 Nothing like a visit to the Recycling Discovery Hub, complete with 'MRF snow' and landfill 'birthday cakes', to encourage us to cut down on our packaging. Did you know that 250 tonnes of recycling per day enters the ACT regional centre? Some hot tips from the experts:... - Don't dispose of batteries in the bin (they can cause fires when they reach the centre) - Only packaging and containers and bottles can be recycled - Nothing smaller than a credit card - Wipe, scrape or rinse containers - Lids in the bin and bottles in the recycling - Think about what you are buying is a drink in an aluminium can just as good? 20.01.2022 How do we save the ocean?! Was the first question Dr Sophie Lewis heard when we visited Pinnochio Early Learning Centre for #NationalScienceWeek. We explored the ways that our actions in Canberra can affect the Ocean, and how we can take care of it from afar

18.01.2022 We visited Dickson College - Official Page’s design and textiles class, who have been researching and practising sustainable ways to make clothing. This semester is all about #upcycling. Their first challenge, ‘Wham! Bam! Slacks!’, was to modify a second-hand pair of jeans or pants. Stay tuned for future projects. We are going to visit again to capture their final upcycled works!... #circulareconomy #sustainablefashion
15.01.2022 We may have achieved 100% renewable energy, but the ACT's ecological footprint might surprise you. For more info on the state of Canberra's environment and how sustainable we really are as a region, check out our new State of the Environment website: https://actsoe.com.au/report/
15.01.2022 Here fishy fishy fishy fishy Monday was #ThreatenedSpeciesDay. Of the kaleidoscope of beautiful wildlife that need protection in the ACT, fish often get overlooked. The Macquarie Perch is an #endangered species that has been impacted by habitat modification. This video was taken by ecologist Mark Jekabsons during a translocation in 2017, in an effort to increase genetic diversity.... To learn more about the 54 threatened species we have in the ACT, and what we can do to help them, visit our new State of the Environment website: bit.ly/329c3Cp
14.01.2022 From July next year, no more single use plastic in the ACT!!
14.01.2022 Welcome to Dhawura Ngadjung - the Northside Hubb of the Academy of Future Skills! As part of her appointment as ACT Scientist of the Year, Dr Sophie Lewis donated equipment to the Academy for students and teachers across the ACT region to access. Yesterday we saw this equipment in action with educators, Lake Ginninderra College Girls in STEM demonstrators and Evatt Primary School students, all learning together - measuring the water quality of local ecosystems.... If you are a teacher who would like support teaching STEM, or need a space to experiment and problem solve with your class, this is the place!: https://bit.ly/2PLvme8

08.01.2022 Earlier this year Salon Canberra was delighted to host Thinking in Circles: Canberra's Circular Economy Forum, held in partnership with the Office of the Commis...sioner for Sustainability and the Environment. The forum featured speakers including Dr John Hewson AM, Sophia Hamblin Wang, Noam Maitless and Dr Sophie Lewis and provided real-world case studies from leading Canberra businesses ONA Coffee Girls on Bikes and Capital Brewing Co. who have become recognised leaders in the blossoming Canberra circular ecosystem. Some of the ideas presented were captured in a short series of clever infographics put together by Canberra based artist and creative Arran McKenna. Take a look for some practical examples and ideas you might be able to use in your own home or business. See more

06.01.2022 Something else to celebrate - well done citizen scientists!
06.01.2022 "A social enterprise start-up powered by a City of Sydney grant has devised the zero-waste solution, of ‘lending’ coffee beans to local businesses and taking back the coffee grounds for reuse." https://bit.ly/3hx5GOJ City of Sydney #sustainability Kua
06.01.2022 Yesterday we visited Majura Primary’s year 3 class who had been designing, testing and building energy efficient shoebox houses! Working with the Academy of Future Skills they learnt about the positioning of solar panelsrelative to the movement of the sun and earthand tested insulation materials to put together a ‘cool home’. It was so inspiring to see how enthusiastic these students were. And that the science they learnt could be applied to their home life, helping them to craft a #sustainablefuture for themselves.

04.01.2022 Today is World Car-free Day, and in a city dominated by cars, it's a great time for Canberrans to be thinking about the ways we can veer away from internal combustion engine vehicles. From this year, 62% of our annual emissions will be from transport. We have reached 100% renewable electricity, now let's mirror that in the ways we get around!... This story, about a company in Tassie working to make second hand electric vehicles more available, is a great example of the momentum we need:
04.01.2022 'Thick as a brick' just took on a whole new meaning... 'The humble house brick has been turned into a battery that can store electricity, raising the possibility that buildings could one day become literal powerhouses.'

01.01.2022 99% of Natural Temperate Grasslands have disappeared since European Settlement. In Canberra, less than 30% of this habitat is found in conservation areas (reserves or national parks). This makes the recent protection of the Franklin Grasslands a big deal! To have your say on how this Canberra Nature Park is managed and used in the future, go to https://bit.ly/2QM7d7I to fill out the survey, or attend the open day this Sunday. You can learn more about Canberra's grasslands, and what we recommend, at our new State of the Environment site: https://actsoe.com.au/report/ by Mark Jekabsons
