24.01.2022 In week nine of our 11-week campaign to celebrate Victoria’s marine environment, we are exploring the fish of #PortPhillip and #WesternPort, sharing insights from the Victorian #StateoftheBays (SotB) 2016 report. A high proportion of Victoria’s recreational fisheries catch is sourced from Port Phillip Bay and Western Port. The SotB report focuses on King George whiting, snapper and sand flathead as key species that indicate the health of fish in the bays and other ecological ...processes. These three species can tell us a lot about the state of the bays. These species indicate the health of fish in the bays more generally, as well as other processes (for example, seagrass health, snapper as an important predator etc.). You can read the full article on our website. We also invite you to head to our interactive State of the Bays website here and access the SotB 2016 report the next iteration of the report will include an expanded scope and be titled the Victorian State of the Marine and Coastal Environment 2021 report currently in preparation by the #CommissionerforEnvironmentalSustainability. #whatsthestate #sustainabledevelopment #water #marine #GillianSparkes #MichaelReid #ScottRawlings #DELWP ttps://www.ces.vic.gov.au/articles/habitats-and-their-dependent-species-fish

05.01.2022 As part of our campaign to celebrate Victoria’s marine environment, this week we share some insights on marine-dependent birds in the ecosystems of #PortPhillipBay and #WesternPort from the State of the Bays (SotB) 2016 report. Information is available on the health of a range of waterbirds in Western Port including fish-eating birds while the Port Phillip Bay analysis is restricted to roosting shorebirds. There is also a discussion of the little penguin colonies at Phill...ip Island and St Kilda. https://lnkd.in/g5peqYq The SotB 2016 identified significant knowledge gaps include improving Port Phillip Bay #monitoring activities, to bring them into line with activities in Western Port, and integrating current bird research. Other gaps include understanding the impacts of fish food stocks on birds and improving the accuracy of penguin counts. Read more shorturl.at/BGUY9 We invite you to head to our State of the Bays website here the next iteration of the report will include an expanded scope and be titled the Victorian State of the Marine and Coastal Environment 2021 report currently in preparation by the #CommissionerforEnvironmentalSustainability. https://lnkd.in/gB5Z4ey See more

05.01.2022 The #VictoriaNatureFestival springs into action this week with a diverse range of free, nature-based virtual activities featuring penguins, #UNESCO sites, park rangers, conservation lectures and Traditional Owner tours. The festival also includes school activities, nature-based activities and virtual events. Our picks include a virtual Facebook Live tour of the amazing #BudjBim UNESCO #WorldHeritage site, in the #Gunditjmara country of south western Victoria. It takes place ...on Tuesday 29 September and will be hosted by #GlenelgHopkinsCMA and #BudjBimTours. Budj Bim is the first Indigenous site to be added exclusively for its cultural significance. Virtual tourists can expect to learn about how Traditional Owners used the lava flows of the Budj Bim area to trap and harvest eels and live in Victoria's South-West. The #CommissionerforEnvironmentalSustainability featured an aerial shot of Budj Bim on the cover of its latest publication highlighting science for sustainable development to guide the Victorian State of the Environment 2023 Report [insert link and cover photo]. We recommend that you register for the tour ASAP via https://fb.me/e/cGadRYxDF.
