25.01.2022 Committee for Ballarat wishes Michelle Whyte, Executive Officer of Leadership Ballarat & Western Region (LBWR), every success as she moves on to a community development role in the Western Region. Michelle has been an indefatigable advocate for the program and an asset that we will miss. That said, we are thrilled to know that her knowledge and expertise can be deployed elsewhere in the region for the betterment of the common good. Since November 2017 Michelle has led the org...anisation, which sits within the Committee for Ballarat, as a mechanism to populate the region with forward-thinking leaders. You can read more about Michelles great impact here http://www.committeeforballarat.com/latest-news.php

23.01.2022 Along with the City of Ballarat, Commerce Ballarat and Ballarat Regional Tourism we joined a growing list of submissions to the Prime Minster directly, to extend Job Keeper payment beyond 30 September, for those industries who need it the most. "Almost 6000 people in Ballarat have lost their jobs since the pandemic began. More than 2800 JobKeeper applications have been lodged by businesses in Ballarat (April figures). Our consultation with industry, has told us that the JobKe...eper program has been integral to keeping people in some form of paid employment during this time. With the Victorian business restriction environment likely to remain uncertain for many months ahead, it is clear there is a growing concern about the cessation of JobKeeper at the end of September." You can read the letter here http://www.committeeforballarat.com/latest-news.php
23.01.2022 CEO, Michael Poulton is proud to be nominated by Ballarat Council as the Ballarat Champion for The Regional Australia Institute, Regional Activators Alliance; "Living in Ballarat is a conscious decision for me. I worked in Melbourne and commuted from Ballarat because it offered a lifestyle that could not be matched. For me and I’m sure many others, regional living connects place, purpose and people. It’s hard to measure in quantifiable terms but it’s incredibly powerful ...and emotional. It’s hard to imagine unless you’ve actually experienced it, but having done so, its very hard to leave. To be involved in the Regional Activators Alliance is an opportunity to tell the rest of country just how good it is to live and work in regional Australia" https://committeeforballarat.com//ballarat-a-destination-/

22.01.2022 Fast rail which includes a Melbourne Airport Rail Link tunnel, combined with the long-term jobs during construction, equals a winning prospect for the economys slow recovery from the pandemic. "(Its) a post-COVID recovery that has a bold long term vision, (that) can set Australia up for the next 30 years and beyond," said CEO, Michael Poulton. "Weve always been confident that investing in regional rail will energise regional Victoria, and now we know by how much, the NIEI...R report makes the overwhelming economic, social and environmental case for investment in the next generation of fast, high frequency and reliable regional rail." Mr Poulton encouraged the state and federal governments to look to the long term and seize the opportunity presented by building a new tunnel, instead of using existing infrastructure. 21.01.2022 "We have been talking for a long time about zero emission energy targets and renewable energy. The current pandemic gives us two things: the certainty that we have been having an adverse impact on our environment and an opportunity to take the solutions from rhetoric to reality. Committee for Ballarat recently held a webinar on sustainability featuring experts Professor Ross Garnaut, Eytan Lenko, Heidi Lee and Philip Harrington. They made it clear that sustainability is no lo...nger a future dream, but a current reality" https://www.thecourier.com.au//covid-19-is-the-end-of-li/ The Courier

12.01.2022 Governments have been saying for years that our reliance on Melbourne needs to shift, and that we need to build centres outside the CBD. Whether its decentralisation, regionalisation, or polycentrism how do we shift people and focus away from the city? Today our CEO, Michael Poulton joined hosts Richelle Hunt and Warwick Long on The Conversation Hour to discuss all things regionalisation and population growth. 10.01.2022 Our members come from regional Victoria which represents approximately 25% of the State’s population and the regional economy which accounts for approximately 21% of the State’s overall economy. We acknowledge the recent five-day state-wide ‘Circuit Breaker’ was imposed to prevent a third wave and the potential for further catastrophic health and economic impacts. We now urge the Government to reflect deeply on the implementation of the ‘Circuit Breaker’ and prepare a compreh...ensive plan for any further ‘shutdowns’ that may be necessary in the months ahead of us. As leaders in regional Victoria representing business, there are a number of key learnings we ask the government to consider: A more nuanced approach when shutting down the state. A ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach is not the answer in response to every potential outbreak Greater clarity and consistency for restrictions at each stage Communication through the relevant Government departments to handle the enquiries of business and the community in a more consistent, accurate and timely manner Greater clarity for the unique circumstances of our border communities. 10.01.2022 Committee for Ballarat have joined with Ballarat Council and Commerce Ballarat to call for a review of the COVID-19 Roadmap. We believe a more appropriate, regionally specific set of targets should be applied. To subject the whole of Victoria to 0 new cases for 14 days and only after 23 November is too high a threshold and will unfairly disadvantage the majority of regional Victoria. We cannot sit by and watch our regional communities being impacted unfairly by restrictions. ...We call on the government to consider each LGA discretely, to identify regions of concern, and allow others to move forward as quickly as possible. You can see the full statement here http://www.committeeforballarat.com/latest-news.php
