09.01.2022 Construction Industry Update from City of Greater Geelong The City of Greater Geelong is continuing to adjust and respond to the impacts the COVID-19 pandemic is having on all parts of our community, including the construction industry. They are regularly engaging with stakeholders, including the Master Builders Association and Urban Development Institute of Australia (Victoria), to ensure they are well informed about challenges being experienced and ways in which we can assi...st the industry. City of Greater Geelongs FAQs page can provide you with more information (link can be found below). City of Greater Geelong understands the introduction of necessary health and safety measures, such as social distancing, is limiting the number of construction workers allowed on site and impacting project timelines and productivity. In response, and as part of feedback sought by Mayor Steph Asher from the industry, a measure was introduced in recent months for temporary changes to operating hours on a case by case basis. Applications are restricted to multi-storey commercial, multi-storey large residential and mixed-use development construction settings. Suburban residential development cannot be considered as the EPA Residential Noise Regulations apply and cannot be varied. If you wish to apply for changes to operating hours please email your details through to [email protected] and you will be contacted by an officer to discuss your request.

08.01.2022 A budget like no other, for a time like no other Victorian State Budget 2020/21 Statement from Jennifer Cromarty, CEO ... The 2020-21 Victorian Budget unveiled by Treasurer Tim Pallas yesterday does a lot and needed to do a lot as our state moves toward recovery from the impacts of the pandemic and Melbourne’s shutdown. While there is unprecedented investment to help our state recover, there is also unprecedented levels of debt. In general terms, the Committee for Geelong welcomes this budget as it provides a strong and balanced focus on both the health and well being of the community and on the significant supports required to stimulate the economy and support jobs growth, Ms Cromarty said. It was great to see a range of initiatives and projects funded, including support for our tourism and visitor economy sector, Deakin University, Anam Cara House Geelong, Skilling the Bay via The Gordon and also previously announced projects including Kardinia Park Stadium, Geelong Fast Rail, and the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds rail duplication. These are all projects that Committee for Geelong has advocated for and we welcome the Victorian Government’s inclusion in this budget. However, we were disappointed to not see funding specifically for the Northern Aquatic and Community Hub project but note that there is a significant up-kick in funding of $110 million for the Economic and Community Development Fund to support priority community projects that can be activated quickly to create and retain jobs. This fund may provide an avenue for State Government support for the Hub. We were also concerned that there was no reference to the $15 million required for road funding for the GeelongPort to support the arrival of the Spirit of Tasmania in 2022. The Committee for Geelong will continue to work with our members and local stakeholders with a view to advocating to both the Federal and State Governments for the 2021 May Budgets, Ms Cromarty said. 04.01.2022 Christine Couzens MP has asked the Committee to share this message with the community: As you may be aware there are some in the Victorian community who are distributing misinformation in relation to the proposed amendment. To ensure that you have correct and transparent information, I am providing the details to this amendment. Some of the key public health protections required to manage this pandemic are only available when a State of Emergency has been declared.... It is necessary to amend the legislation so that a State of Emergency, and powers under it, can continue to be used if there are low or no confirmed cases in Victoria. This is to ensure public health risk powers can be exercised - for example, we can still have restrictions that require a person to self-isolate when they are diagnosed with coronavirus. The State of Emergency allows all the Chief Health Officer (CHO) directions to be made that allow us to fight this virus. For example, State of Emergency enables: the requirement to wear a face covering when leaving home requiring a person to self-isolate when they are diagnosed with coronavirus or are a close contact of a positive case requiring workplaces to have a COVID Safe Plan requiring workplaces to keep accurate records for all workers and visitors who attend the workplace requiring workplaces to meet density requirements limiting the number of people who can attend private and public gatherings enabling different stages of restrictions to be put in place in different areas of the State, depending on the level of infection and risk."

04.01.2022 A message from Treasurer and Minister for Industrial Relations Tim Pallas - Have Your Say Over The Future Of The Gig Economy On-demand workers, businesses and Victorians who use platforms for goods and services are being asked for their views on a way forward for the ever-growing gig economy. Minister for Industrial Relations Tim Pallas has asked Victorians to provide their views as part of a consultation period. The consultation period is about Victorians providing their vi...ews on these recommendations, as the Government considers its response. The Inquiry into the Victorian On-Demand Workforce was chaired by former Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James, and commissioned by the Victorian Government in 2018 following widespread concern over the wages and conditions offered to workers in the gig economy. It found many workers have an uncertain work status, which can have consequences when it comes to things like superannuation and workers compensation, and advice about work status is often limited and fragmented. It also found that platform work is far more prevalent in Australia than previously thought, and as the economic impacts of coronavirus demonstrate, its casual workers who are often the first to be let go. Targeted consultation meetings will be chaired by Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer Nick Staikos, and written submissions must be lodged by October 13. For more information or to have your say on the recommendations, visit engage.vic.gov.au/inquiry-on-demand-workforce.
