25.01.2022 Time for greater collaboration! Tune into ABC News at 5:30pm to hear from our CEO Martine Letts commentary on the report commissioned from SGS Economics and Planning entitled 'Reimagining Australias South-East' released today. The report, produced prior to the COVID-19 crisis, details the extensive economic and social benefit that could be achieved if an East Coast Megaregion were established from Geelong to the Sunshine Coast.... The conversation continued today in The Age in its coverage, East coast mega-region would boost national growth: report, by Matt Wade and Jennifer Duke. https://www.theage.com.au//east-coast-mega-region-would-bo Read the report here: http://melbourne.org.au//blog/reimagining-australias-south

24.01.2022 Committee member, Nous Group discusses the strategic opportunities presented by Covid-19. As we collectively grapple with the imminent challenges appear clear, what does it mean for the long term? And what strategic opportunities may be presented by the pandemic? Participants at a recent Nous group panel discussed the issue. There was a sense of determination and optimism to bounce forward, not bounce back. https://www.nousgroup.com//higher-education-covid-19-oppo/

24.01.2022 Martine Letts, CEO Committee for Melbourne featured in Saturday's Herald Sun when asked about the use of water taxis on the Yarra River. The Yarra River provides an opportunity to take pressure off our roads by trialling water taxis linking precincts such as Docklands, Southbank, Fishermans Bend and the Arts and Sports destinations, such as Melbourne Olympic Parks. Make the Yarra the central feature connecting all of our city like other great cities of the world. The Yarra... goes from Docklands to South Wharf, Crown Promenade, Federation Square, Birrarung Marr to Melbourne Olympic Parks. It’s a once in a generation opportunity to connect all our workspaces, sporting, arts and outdoor attractions as we approach the summer season. Sweep aside the crippling bureaucracy to make this happen by fast-tracking water taxi permits, activating the promenades. https://www.heraldsun.com.au//faba507da28705b3549422bcd798

23.01.2022 Join us for a free webinar at 11am on Wednesday exploring Eastern Seaboard Collaboration with special guest Geoff Roberts, Chief Commissioner of the Greater Sydney Commission. The benefits of collaboration across Australia have been demonstrated by the rapid and co-ordinated health response to the COVID-19 crisis, through the newly formed National Cabinet. It has been recognised that Australia should try to retain such cooperation following this crisis, in recovery and beyond.... It is timely therefore that the Committee for Melbourne has identified the benefits of collaboration across an East Coast Megaregion, in its report released on 18 May, entitled Reimagining Australias South-East. The report, which was commissioned from SGS Economics and Planning, details the extensive economic and social benefit that could be achieved if an East Coast Megaregion were established from Geelong to the Sunshine Coast. The findings in the report reinforce that an East Coast Megaregion will facilitate enhanced export capabilities and co-ordinated innovation, infrastructure investment and settlement strategies. Though commissioned before the bushfires and COVID-19, its recommendations appear to the Committee, more apposite than ever. Join Martine Letts, CEO, Committee for Melbourne, the author Terry Rawnsley, Principal Partner, SGS Economics and Planning, and Geoff Roberts AM, Chief Commissioner - Greater Sydney Commission, to hear about the benefits of an East Coast Megaregion. https://melbourne.org.au//sgs-mega-regions-event-eastern-/

22.01.2022 Its a match! Sign up today to Australian Volunteers International SkillsBank, Australias first dedicated skilled online volunteering platform, free of charge during the pandemic. Almost 80 per cent of Australian companies offer staff a number of volunteer days each year as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitments. Yet, despite actively encouraging participation, only 17 per cent of companies reach their volunteer days target. At the same time, Austral...ias 59,000 registered charities struggle to access the skills they desperately need. Time poor and resource stretched, it usually feels like more trouble than its worth. To address this, AVI has launched SkillsBank, Australias first dedicated online skilled volunteering platform. https://www.avi.org.au/skillsbank/ #volunteering #skills #skillsforthefuture #notforprofit

20.01.2022 Committee for Melbourne welcomes the Victorian Government’s timely announcement of an investment of $5.3 billion into building 12,000 social and affordable homes over four years. We have long advocated for such a move, given the growing number households on waiting lists across Victoria and the growing need for affordable housing for key workers who are increasingly being placed under financial stress or being pushed further away from where they work. There is an imperative to increase social and affordable housing in Victoria across the spectrum of need (very low, low and moderate-income households) which has been exacerbated by COVID-19. https://melbourne.org.au/taskforce/housing-mix/ https://www.theage.com.au//this-will-change-lives-5-3-bill

16.01.2022 Without an effective vaccine or preventative drug treatment for COVID-19, isolation, quarantine and physical distancing are the crucial tools we can use to reduce the impact of the virus. These interventions rely on the support and engagement of communities to ensure this response strategy is successful. The highly innovative Australian-led Optimise Study will provide real-time epidemiological information and modelled predictions on the impact of isolation, quarantine and phy...sical distancing measures. This information will help inform national policy and response strategies, in alignment with community needs, to restore economic activity whilst keeping new infections of COVID-19 at a low level. Burnet Institute Deputy Director, Professor Margaret Hellard AM and the presenters will discuss how the multidisciplinary Optimise team will engage with government, community organisations, advocates, and leaders to ensure strategies and interventions are informed by the diverse needs of our society. 11.01.2022 The Committee for Melbourne welcomes the Federal Governments commitment yesterday to fast-tracking key nation-building infrastructure, but would seek a consultative process that involves a range of stakeholders, to determine the appropriate investments aligned to a transparent settlement strategy for Australias East Coast. 09.01.2022 Yesterday, Committee for Melbourne members explored the findings of Infrastructure Victorias latest report; Good Move: Fixing Transport Congestion, highlighting the real costs of congestion. We need to change the way we think about future transport systems to achieve optimum value-for-money infrastructure investment. This includes exploring the way we pay for our roads, transport, and parking.... Whilst the COVID-19 crisis has temporarily reduced transport network congestion, failure to implement policies that address pre-existing issues means that congestion and over-crowding will likely re-emerge when full economic activity resumes. Thanks to Infrastructure Victoria, our expert panel, and our members for a great forum. You can read the report here: https://www.infrastructurevictoria.com.au//executive-summ/

08.01.2022 Let’s Melbourne Again.and rebuild Connectivity, Capacity and Confidence. Melbourne has achieved significant milestones in suppressing COVID-19. With the welcome reopening of many internal borders, we must work hard to regain its once renowned connectivity and deliver a much-needed return of interstate air capacity. This will require a concerted effort to restore consumer confidence in Australia’s ability to travel, visit and stay. Australia is losing $319 million dollars a d...ay in domestic travel and the impact on commerce, families, communities and major events is profound. The direct economic gains in restarting domestic aviation over the summer holiday period could be $3.3 Billion (Source BCA). Committee for Melbourne in partnership with Victoria Tourism Industry Council - VTIC Australian Tourism Industry Council Business Council of Australia is calling for us to work hard and fast to promote confidence and capacity to encourage safe access and return travel to Melbourne.
