22.01.2022 As a parent and small business owner, I pride myself on being able to do eleventy billion things a week before breaking a sweat. When my son was running around with his pull-up diaper hanging fashionably low from his waist, I would look back on my pre-parenthood days with wistful condescension. ‘Look at mid-twenties me,’ I’d muse, ‘thinking I never had any time - HahahaHAHAHA.’ But now, with school in full swing (so long daycare hours) and Covid wreaking havoc on my client ba...se, the feeling of having no time at all ever has become a concrete reality. So I’ve decided to take the bull by the horns - and get all the money work done in just 5 hours a day. Here’s how: 1. THE TO-DO & NICE-TO-DO LIST Write this up at the end of each day, so you’re not faffing about with lists before your first coffee. Most importantly, divide the list into the non-negotiable to-dos and nice-to-dos. Get the non-negotiable things out the way first and then spend the afternoon smashing out the fun stuff. 2. EXERCISE. EVERY DAY Going from bed, to school drop-off and then straight to your desk is a brilliant way to feel like you never have any time. Find a way to make the time to exercise. Even if it’s as simple as parking a few blocks away from school and walking there and back - especially living on the Peninsula! (thank you beach ) 3. BE AN EMAIL NINJA Rather than drowning in overwhelm every time you open your inbox, make a pact to keep those emails short and sweet. And if you’re fretting people may think you’re brusque, think about it this way. It’s much nicer to receive a short reply quickly, than to hear nothing for weeks on end. 4. NEVER EVER MULTITASK Countless studies have proved that multitasking is the gateway drug of inefficiency. So take a deep breath and STOP. Turn off those notifications, put the phone where you can’t be distracted by the screen and just do one. thing. at. a. Time. 5. ALWAYS BREAK FOR LUNCH I know, it seems SO counterintuitive, but look up . Yep, eating and working at the same time counts as multitasking, which equals: INEFFICIENCY. So take a break, time it and eat your lunch. Your brain will work better. Trust me.

16.01.2022 Hi, I'm Taylor! I manage the admin behind Common on West and make sure things run smoothly. I handle desk/meeting room bookings, invoices and customer enquiries as well as the day to day tasks like managing the mail, watering the plants and most excitingly - setting up the printer! What do you like most about working on the Central Coast? I love being close to home and working locally. It’s so convenient not to have to waste time commuting, you can get so much more do...ne in your day when you don’t have to travel to Sydney and back. I also love the Coast lifestyle; being able to go straight from work to the beach is the best. Greatest movie of all time? Pulp Fiction Favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon is to watch a movie with my family. It’s nice to unwind and spend time with them before the week ahead. Got a motto you live by? Fake it till you make it!

14.01.2022 Happy New Year! 2020 has changed so much in the way we live and work. Working remotely is more viable an option now than ever and this is a pretty welcome outcome for many of us living on the Central Coast. As the Peninsular's first and largest co-working space, we know how important it is to have a place to go that is close to home and keeps you just as productive (if not more) than in the office. So put it on the list. A new space to work could be just the thing... you need to make 2021 the brightest, and most successful year yet! #2021 #happynewyear #nye #newyearresolution #brighterfuture #brighteryear #commononwest #coworkingcommunity #coworkingspaces #coworkingoffice #uminabeach #umina #centralcoastnsw #smallbusinessowner #worklocal #lovecentralcoast #remotework #coworkingspace #coworkspace #centralcoastsmallbusiness #smallbusinesscentralcoastnsw #woywoy
14.01.2022 Let’s face it. The days of slaving away in a grey walled office cell are over. We’re in 2020 now. We’re all about running our own businesses and spending time with the family. We think global and shop local. Also, we’re nuts about indoor plants. Here are 6 indisputable reasons to get a whole lot of green in the workspace. 1. THEY LOOK AWESOME... Whether you want to impress potential clients, look great on Zoom, or are inspired by beautiful things, a bit of greenery is an incredibly simple and cost effective way to get your space looking amazing. 2. THEY MAKE YOU MORE PRODUCTIVE According to a study conducted at Washington State University, the presence of plants in an office environment reduced workers' blood pressure and increased task completion speeds by 12%. Workers also reported that they felt more attentive when plants were present. 3. THEY’RE A NATURAL AIR PURIFIER Office plants eliminate indoor pollutants through photosynthesis, improving air quality. 4. PLANTS CALM ANXIETY Did you know that plants help with loneliness, anxiety and depression? Being in the company of another living thing gives us purpose and can be very rewarding - also, they don’t gossip or ask incessant questions like Sharon in cubicle two. 5. PLANTS ADD GOOD HUMIDITY TO THE AIR Tired of drying ventilated air? Houseplants lose 90% of their water through transpiration, which makes them great natural humidifiers - who would’ve thought?! 6. PLANTS MAKE YOU MORE CREATIVE Being out in nature is a known way to increase creativity. Having office plants in your space will cause you to get different perspectives, help you feel more relaxed and better able to concentrate on your tasks.

Simon's a fan of working close to home: "With a large family (5 kids) the move to set up SGF on the Central Coast has been one of the best things I could have done for work. I’m close to home, so I can see my wife and kids at those critical times each day and I get to enjoy the magic of the Central Coast. The surfing, mountain biking, social activities it re...ally has everything (don’t tell everyone)." 12.01.2022 Where you work matters: This is why you’re more productive when you love your workplace Research by Oxford University's Saïd Business School, in collaboration with British multinational telecoms firm BT, has found a conclusive link between happiness and productivity. It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. We all know how long the day can take when your micromanaging boss is breathing down your neck, and the only thing making you smile is #CareerEndingTwitterTypos.... An extensive study into happiness and productivity has found that workers are 13% more productive when happy. (https://buff.ly/2IVvzbp) The authors state that while the link between happiness and productivity has often been discussed, their study provides the first causal field evidence for this relationship. ‘There has never been such strong evidence,’ said Professor De Neve. Recent research into the mood of the UK has found that paid work is ranked near the bottom in terms of activities that make the population happy. ‘There seems to be considerable room for improvement in the happiness of employees while they are at work,’ comments Professor De Neve. ‘While this clearly in the interest of workers themselves, our analysis suggests it is also in the interests of their employers.’ Workers participating in the study were asked to rate their happiness on a weekly basis for six months using a simple email survey containing five emoji buttons representing states of happiness from very sad to very happy. Data on attendance, call-to-sale conversion and customer satisfaction were tracked, along with the worker’s scheduled hours and breaks. The researchers collated this information alongside administrative data obtained from the firm on worker characteristics, work schedules and productivity. The researchers found that happy workers do not work more hours than their discontented colleagues they are simply more productive within their time at work. So why not ask yourself, 'is my workplace making me happy today?' If the answer is a no, it may be time to make that change.

11.01.2022 Hi I'm Tiff and I've been working here for seven years! I helped set up the space - so all the great furniture, plants and our rad mural was my idea. We commissioned Bianca Cardis - @avocamarkets - to paint it and we it! The best thing about working local is not having to commute, and meeting local people and businesses. Our space means people really have the ability to network - I've seen some great collaborations happening as a result. On the weekends I really enjoy ...bushwalking with my family - we're so spoiled for choice on the Peninsula. But being a mum of two, being able to spend time with my friends and have actual adult conversations is the best! #commononwest #coworkingcommunity #coworkingspaces #coworkingoffice #uminabeach #umina #centralcoastnsw #smallbusinessowner #worklocal #lovecentralcoast #meettheteam

10.01.2022 For many of us Central Coasties, the Covid-19 restrictions of the past three months have not been without their challenges. But you’ve got to admit, no longer having to travel to Sydney for work has been pretty great. Whether you’re a small business owner, or an employee, the flexibility of remote working has a whole lot of benefits. As restrictions ease, many of us are itching to get back into a more social office environment - but do we have to leave the coast to do so? Her...e are 5 excellent reasons to make the change and stay local. 1. THE EARLY MORNING OCEAN SWIM/SURF It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but for those coasties that have experienced the invigorating joy of hurling themselves into the ocean before work, you know the truth. Try it once and you’ll never go back. 2. WE LIVE IN PARADISE Hands up who revelled in those lunchtime walks along the beach, thrived by starting the day with a bushwalk or couldn’t help but take in the landscape and think, ‘thank God we’re not in Sydney - how lucky are we to live in paradise’? 3. TRAVEL IS EXPENSIVE! SAVE THOSE You know what you could do with the cash you’d save on travel? Anything. Pretty much anything. 4. MORE TIME WITH THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE How many dinnertimes are missed because the traffic was rubbish, or the train was delayed, again? How often do you start a thought with the sentence, ‘I’d love to, but I just don’t have the time.’? If lockdown has taught us anything, it's that spending time with the people we love matters - and a work-life balance matters too. 5. YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORK FROM HOME TO WORK CLOSE BY Common on West is a cowork space in the heart of Umina. With full time, fixed and casual options available, you really don’t have to do the commute to get all the advantages of a CBD office space. #commononwest #coworkingcommunity #coworkingspaces #coworkingoffice #uminabeach #umina #centralcoastnsw #smallbusinessowner #worklocal #lovecentralcoast #remotework

08.01.2022 Meet Eloise! She is a Visual Communication Designer who recently took up residence in our offices. We decided to find out a little about what she does. First of all, what exactly is a Visual Communication Designer? My work can range from motion graphics, graphic design, logos, branding, typeface design, magazine layouts and web design. In all these tasks I always put in 110% to try and exceed the client's expectations, with bespoke and innovative design solutions. At its ...core, design is creative problem solving, and decision making. What do you like most about working on the Central Coast? I am a born and raised Central Coast custodian - so it only feels natural to be practicing my craft here. I love how creative the Central Coast is! It is full of wonderful diverse people with minds bursting with creativity. I feel blessed to live in a community of inspiring and creative people where we can bounce ideas, and collaborate on exciting projects. What’s your favourite thing about working from @commononwest? I am only new to the space but I have already felt such a massive improvement in my working life. Being a young creative I am inspired by all the established professionals in the space. It's amazing to be able to ask for help or to share knowledge with other creative people. Favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Broooo, Im a hardcore foodie. If I'm not designing, I'm lounging all day at local cafes or bar hopping. My favourite place to chill is @bartotoettalong with my mates, and @lordsofpour for weekend coffee dates. Got a motto you live by? 'Put yourself out there, take risks, and don't give a f***.' It's really confronting as a young creative to put yourself out there and 'announce yourself to the world.' Design is super subjective and so criticism and critique is all a part of the process. You have to embrace this criticism or else you will never make it in this cutthroat field. Follow Eloise on Instagram: @ee.designstudio https://www.instagram.com/ee.designstudio/
07.01.2022 Meet Nathaniel! He is the Managing Director of Architects of Entertainment, an Event Production Agency that specialises in outdoor events - primarily music festivals. They are the planning and operational backbone of a number of large outdoor events in Australia. What do you like most about working on the Central Coast? A healthy work life balance has been much more achievable since I started working on the Coast. I can swim everyday, hang out at the skatepark with my 6yr o...ld, be home to cook delicious dinners and still get a solid work day in. It is possible. What’s your favourite thing about working from Common On West ? The chilled sparkling water on tap. Favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Anything outdoors with my family. Got a motto you live by? Good manners cost you nothing and get you everything.

06.01.2022 Working local has SO MANY advantages - and being able to grab delicious food, seven days a week, right in the heart of Umina Beach is one of the best. 1. WANDEE THAI Wandee Thai Restaurant Two blocks from @commononwest is some truly kick-ass thai food. I’m a sucker for their Pad See Ew, and with Spring well and truly on our doorstep you can’t go past the Som-Tum Thai salad for something fresh and zingy. ... 2. BMX BURGERS BMX Burgers Anyone who has been bold enough to turn their back on the golden arches knows that this place is LEGIT. With bad-ass burgers that cater to even the most annoying and fussy foodies (yup, that’s me) and decor that brings on instant flashbacks to the days of VHS movies, it’s got Friday lunch covered. 4. UMINA HOT BREAD KITCHEN Umina Hot Bread Kitchen Who can go past a Vietnamese Pork roll? Nobody can go past a Vietnamese Pork roll. Thankfully, when you need to grab some lunch on the run, this place never lets you down. 3. MIORI JAPANESE RESTAURANT MIORI Japanese restaurant I recently discovered Miori’s lunch specials and I’m hooked. If you’re keen to venture past their (awesome) sushi rolls, try out the Zaru Soba (buckwheat noodle in a dashi broth with your choice of meat or vegetable). Yuuuuum! 5. JASMINE GREENS Jasmine Greens Park Kiosk You probably already picked up a coffee from here some time around school drop off, but the likelihood of extended fantasies involving those house made pork and fennel rolls around lunchtime is high. And when you work local, not only is enjoying that lunch right on the beach possible, it's perfect. 7. HOME I have to admit, one of my favourite things about working from Common on West is its proximity to home. Being able to whip up a salad and enjoy it in the sun, in my backyard is one of the best things on earth! What are your favourite places to eat local? #commononwest #coworkingcommunity #coworkingspaces #coworkingoffice #uminabeach #umina #centralcoastnsw #smallbusinessowner #worklocal #lovecentralcoast #remotework #locallymade #lovecentralcoast #eatlocal #localfoodie #localfoods #supportsmallbusiness
