However, many still dont have a listening strategy. Social media listening is more than simply checking notifications and responding to direct messages. A good listening strategy is a proactive approach to seeking out what current and potential clients are talking about. ... Not everyone is going to directly engage with you and tell you what they think of your business, products or services. However, they will talk about them to friends, colleagues and their wider social media networks. You may not be able to track what people are saying face-to-face but you do have access to what is being publicly talked about through internet and social media channels. When was the last time searched for your business or brand name to see what is being said? Or do you check what people are saying what they like and dont like about your industry sector? Especially if you outsource your social media to a third party, it is vital as a business owner or manager to keep track of direct and indirect feedback. You cant truly engage with people in your market until you understand what they want and how you are viewed by them. Getting your listening strategy right is the important first step in this process.

09.01.2022 A positive article on our interest in local news from Geelong Advertiser in todays paper. What the article doesnt say, though, is the bulk of the readership increase between October 2017 and October 2018 was on its digital platforms. According to Emma Insights,print readership fell by 1,000 readers in that 12 months while digital readership increased from 184 thousand to 243 thousand - a 32% rise. Therefore, it is more important than ever to monitor what is being published online rather than simply in the printed paper.
09.01.2022 Are you still using Vanity Metrics for measuring your social media effectiveness? If so, you are way off target. Vanity metrics are measurements such as number of followers, reach and number of likes.They may look exciting but they are just for show. For some time now, there has been a move away from simply basing social media success on quantity. For example, its no use if you are a local bricks and mortar shop and all your Instagram likes are coming from overseas accounts.... Or if your accounts are just getting likes and comments from auto-bots (ie programmes designed to like or make a generic comment in response to a specific hashtag term). Instead, you need to analyse the Quality of the engagement you receive. Are the likes coming from people who are already customers or are very likely to become a customer? Are the comments on your post genuine and helpful? Are people asking questions in response to your posts? Are there particular people who regularly engage with you on social media? Many businesses still rely on the vanity metrics because they are easy to monitor. However, put a bit more effort into your measurement strategy and you will get far greater benefits and a more relevant insight into your social media activities.

04.01.2022 7AFL has rightly reinstated this photo on their Facebook and Twitter pages after making a bad judgement to remove it. It was removed after trolls started posting lewd and despicable comments. While trying to do the right thing, 7AFL unfortunately made a wrong choice and has been widely roasted for not properly moderating their social media. Even the player in the photo - Tayla Harris - and the photographer - Michael Willson - publicly expressed their disappointment and anger at having the photo removed. Congratulations to 7AFL for owning up to the error. However, it is a reminder social media management is more than just being able to use Facebook or Twitter or Instagram and write catchy intros. It is as much about understanding community sentiment and having good judgement.
