25.01.2022 Richard Denniss reminds us that it is our public services that will serve us best in times of crisis, not the 'market' and what all levels of government need to do is spend and invest in our public services and focus on community building and community security.

24.01.2022 via David Brand, Councillor for Lake Ward, Port Phillip. "Melbourne Water are running a community consultation on the Shakespeare Grove stormwater outfall upgrade project. But we all know it as the former Brookes Jetty (the one that Parks Victoria tore down). Since then, Melbourne Water fenced it off (in the most ugliest but functional way) as the concrete deteriorated. MW are now making a VERY welcome move to put forward some money to help resolve this major community amenit...y issue on our St Kilda Beach. You NEED to do your civic duty (before Valentines Day 14 February, so do it TODAY) to go online and complete the Melbourne Water SURVEY (link via the page below) as to which design you prefer. It would also PERHAPS be your civic duty to write in the COMMENTS section that you would like a new design that featured "MORE JETTY" to be added to the end, so that we can Bring Back Brookes Jetty."

24.01.2022 Will the City of Port Phillip entertain something similar? Regular local communication about the crisis is vital for community wellbeing.

23.01.2022 What is happening with who gets COVID-19 fines in Victoria? What about in Port Phillip?

16.01.2022 We all need to get behind calls like this.

11.01.2022 Yesterday Save Childcare in Port Phillip parents, friends and union organisers met with the new Mayor, Bernadene Voss, Mayor, City of Port Phillip, at Josh Burn...s MP’s office, to constructively talk through some of the issues that have caused considerable community concern and to find out where council’s childcare review is now going. Cr Voss made an undertaking to better inform the community by publishing a progress report, and to provide us with answers to many of the frequently asked questions. She acknowledged that the long silence and lack of clarity from council has caused anxiety and confusion amongst parents and staff. Cr Voss also said that council will soon make public the PWC analysis of data and resolutions that was commissioned to inform the preparation of the childcare business case. We want to thank everyone in the community who has participated in this campaign so far attending meetings, on social media or just signing up to the mailing list. This campaign has helped raise awareness, demonstrated community determination to save childcare services in City Of Port Phillip from hurtful changes, and shown just how much council childcare is supported. We hope that we’ve helped push privatisation off the table and ensured that any move to alter council childcare services is done in the best interests of local children and parents, not just as an easy budget cut. An advisory group will soon be formed by council to help finalise the business case - and SCiPP has argued for the inclusion of parents and staff and local early childhood experts. The ASUVicTas will continue to meet with their members to ensure input. We’ll let you know when we hear anything more from council. https://savechildcare.org/update/

10.01.2022 The Coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the vital role early education and early childhood education plays in our community. We acknowledge all our early child...hood educators in this extremely difficult time and thank them for their work. While we welcome the Federal Government’s initiative to make early childhood education free, the childcare subsidy alone, from the federal government, is not enough for providers to survive. All local early childhood education services also require the JobKeeper subsidy and cash-flow support subsidies in order to stay open. We welcome the news that federal government will also subsidise council run services and we hope that this is the beginning of more support for the sector and our hardworking staff. The changes to the early childhood education system are significant and there is no long-term certainty for the sector at the moment. Therefore, it is vital that the City of Port Phillip halt the process to develop business cases for retaining or transferring out their Council run early childhood education services. Now is a time instead to promote and support the role our Council run childcare centres play in our community. We also call on the City of Port Phillip to postpone their proposed sale of the York St site or commit to putting that funding back into the childcare services.

08.01.2022 Not a photo from NASA as some suggest, but still an accurate depiction of the situation in this country that is affecting us all. A 3D visualization of the Australian fires by Anthony Hearsey - Creative Imaging, compiled from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration satellite data collected across the span of a month. From The Age: Victoria's chief health officer Dr Brett Sutton reiterated that generic surgical masks and bandanas were basically useless in filtering the harmful effects of smoke. Vulnerable people, such as those with asthma, pregnant women and the elderly, are encouraged to purchase specifically-designed P2 or N95 masks.
