01.01.2022 NFPs looking to increase the level of professionalism on their board often find it easiest to recruit early career directors. Those directors are reporting a level of dissatisfaction with NFP boards and boards also report being disappointed with these appointments. The problems can be overcome by developing a board recruitment strategy that: 1. Considers Director remuneration;... 2. Identifies the skills & qualifications required in a new director; 3. Targets the type of individual the Board is looking for; 4. Ensures applicants have sufficient information about the organisation & what it does; and 5. Utilises a considered interview process and reference checks. See more
01.01.2022 Board Tenure A perennial problem for NFPs is what limits, if any, to set on Board tenure in the constitution. My view is that a constitution should set a maximum tenure that Directors can serve before being required to step down. Even if they are allowed to return after period of time. This does not mean the Board has to loose valuable expertise. Directors can seek advice at any time and so can call on a previous Director to provide insight into a particular issue if that ...is necessary. More importantly, it will: 1.Act as motivation for the Board to develop a succession strategy; 2.Ensure there is renewal of expertise and ideas; 3.Overcome the problems that I have seen created when a long standing Director or Chair steps down and there is no one to step in.
