25.01.2022 MEET OUR VOLUNTEER | Helen Cruse is one of our Community Fire Unit (CFU) volunteers based in Turramurra in Sydney’s Upper North Shore. After joining back in 1999, Helen moved overseas for a few years, but joined again on her return in 2013. "What I enjoy most is getting to know our neighbours and seeing how much community spirit there is. Some of my most memorable moments were being involved in hazard reduction burns with our unit members and learning about fire prevention... and protection in real-time. "I really appreciate the time and patience of the local firies who help our CFU with training and personal development. Thank you for your support, Helen! #FRNSW #MoreThanFire #OurPeople #Community #NVW2020

23.01.2022 IMPORTANT COVID-19 UPDATE - Please read and share where appropriate. FRNSW Volunteers, An email has been sent to all members today regarding the delivery of Covid-19 consumables to all units, including face masks and hand sanitiser. ... Direction has also been provided regarding training and activations moving forward into the future. 23.01.2022 MEET OUR VOLUNTEER | As an FRNSW Community Fire Unit (CFU) volunteer for more than a year, Menai’s Denis Astles works closely with other Community Fire Units to prevent the impact of bushfires in his local community. One of my greatest memories was after completing our first training; after we received our uniform and seeing the members faces full of pride and their enthusiasm for the tasks they were performing. Being involved in the CFU has helped bond the relationship o...f neighbours, and there is a sense of security. Last Christmas we held a street party where all residents (including non-CFU members attended. Thank you for your service, Denis! #FRNSW #MoreThanFire #OurPeople #Community #NVW2020 #Volunteer #Volunteering

14.01.2022 MEET OUR VOLUNTEER | Epping’s Community Fire Unit (CFU) Team Leader Keith Buckley joined the program in July 2014 following an FRNSW Open Day. I helped the volunteers pack up their operational equipment and they remarked that they needed more young enthusiastic people like that. Just like that I signed up. I stepped into the role of Coordinator in 2016 and have a great, supportive unit. I now have five units in my local area who are all outstanding in their own right. ... "The CFUs are a fantastic initiative by FRNSW to engage and harness the skill and ability of local communities, helping to reduce the risk and workload required by firefighters during large events. The addition of Community Emergency Resilience Teams will only strengthen these community units and I'm sure the full potential of their abilities is yet to be found. I'm excited to be part of the journey. Thank you for your service, Keith! #FRNSW #MoreThanFire #OurPeople #Community #NVW2020 #Volunteer #Volunteering

13.01.2022 MEET OUR VOLUNTEER | Ken Morton is a Community Fire Unit team and training coordinator at North Rocks, in Sydney’s north west. Ken has been a CFU volunteer for an amazing 17 years and a team coordinator for 14 of those years. Being a team leader has allowed me to exercise some of the skills from my naval career in people management, training and team development. ... I have enjoyed seeing the way each unit has earned the respect and admiration of the communities in their area of operation. I remember the first time we participated in a pile burn exercise with Castle Hill fire station. Our CFU members had their first experience with the heat and smoke that firefighters have to endure. "We have also been fortunate to attend a back-burn exercise in the reserve behind our estate and observe firefighter skills this gave the members the knowledge that we were part of a much bigger system and highlighted the importance of the CFUs in the event of a fire in our area. It has been most rewarding being able to give back to the something for the pleasure of living here for the last 46 years. Thank you for your service, Ken! #FRNSW #MoreThanFire #OurPeople #Community #NVW2020 #Volunteer #Volunteering

06.01.2022 MEET OUR VOLUNTEER | Doreen McCulloch has been a Community Fire Unit (CFU) volunteer at Windsor Downs in the Hawkesbury region for five dedicated years. Doreen has been instrumental in coordinating a Community Emergency Resilience Team of more than 80 CFU volunteers to service the needs of the local community. "I enjoy the opportunity of helping our community to become more resilient, through the invaluable resources provided by FRNSW. ... Meeting new people and witnessing the growth in knowledge and confidence of individuals has been instrumental in creating great community spirit and long-lasting friendships. Doreen was also involved in ‘Exercise Deerubbin 2019’: a multi-agency emergency exercise to test emergency management arrangements in case of a major flooding incident. As a CFU volunteer, Doreen also had the opportunity to attend our head office and watch our accelerant detection canines in action. Both are outstanding moments; organisation, preparation and communication are integral to the success of any operation. Thank you for your support, Doreen! #FRNSW #MoreThanFire #OurPeople #Community #NVW2020
