15.01.2022 On Monday 18th of November the Community First Step Youth Team assisted Fairfield City Council with hosting their Redefining Normal Youth Mental Health Event at Fairfield Youth and Community Centre. The event was organised and led by the Fairfield City Councils Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) and aimed to decrease stigma and normalise conversations surrounding mental health. The Youth Advisory Committee from Fairfield City Council organised fun and engaging activities to lo...ok at the 5 Ways to Wellbeing for the youth attending FYCC and during the event the Mayor of Fairfield Mr. Carbone addressed the young people drawing on his own experiences of mental health and the importance of breaking down stigma and starting conversations. The next part of the event saw a Mental Health Discussion Panel answer questions from the YAC and other audience members. The panel comprised of: Brendan Bennett from South West Sydney Health, Jenny Holmes from Lifeline Macarthur, Terry Tierney from Community First Step, and Shawn Spina who works in IT and has lived experience with mental health. The panel spoke about the importance of viewing mental health on a continuum. There can be days of good mental health and there can days of poor mental health. If these days of poor mental health continue for a period of time it is important to seek professional help. The attitude of "just getting over it was also discussed. Panel members emphasised the importance of education in breaking down this attitude The example of a broken arm was given. You wouldnt tell someone with a broken arm to get over it, the same applies for someone with a mental health condition. One of the audience members asked if a friend confides in them if they should keep it a secret. The panel said that its best to give your friend the best opportunities to speak to someone themselves. This could be going with them. But they stressed that if you believe theyre a chance of hurting themselves, then you have to tell someone, even if its against their wishes. This could be a matter of life and death. The event concluded with a video," Redefining Normal", made by the YAC. This video highlighted the importance of breaking down stigma and emphasised the importance of seeking help. The event was a success, with the attendees enjoying the content and the effort of the YAC.
