18.01.2022 Meet Our Tenant: Asha. Last year, following issues with her health, Asha found herself without a job or a home. Having worked as a nurse for four and a half years, Asha was always very independent and so when she found herself in CHL’s supported accommodation at Queens Road in St Kilda, Melbourne, it was unexpected. I never expected to end up being in supported accommodation but unfortunately due to my mental illness getting significantly worse in my late twenties, I reall...y needed help to support my functioning. With the help of the team at Queens Road Asha was given the time and space she needed to prioritise her mental health and build a solid routine to help gain back her independence. Asha has since successfully secured a private rental in the north-western suburbs of Melbourne with enough space for her and her partner to grow and make a home of their own. 17.01.2022 The holiday season has arrived early for one of our tenants!! Please meet Ali.... Ali arrived in Australia in 2010 as a refugee. He had no family and friends, no job and knew very little English. Ten years on, he is a husband, father, works full-time and is well versed in English. And now, he departs his CHL property to move into his very own home. Read how Ali went from hardship to home ownership here: https://bit.ly/37u36q8... #endhomelessness #homeownership #homeowner

16.01.2022 MEET OUR TENANT: VICKIE Following the loss of her husband, her bakery business and home, Vickie, found herself on the brink of homelessness. I had to sell nearly everything I had just to pay the rent. So, I ended up without a car. The rent I was paying was $355 a week and I was a pensioner, and I thought, this is ridiculous how am I going to survive. I’m going to be homeless, and so I phoned DHHS. Vickie says it was through DHHS that she found out about CHL. She met wit...h the CHL Housing Team in East Melbourne and applied for a home. She was then offered a CHL apartment, which she has lived in for the last nine years with her cats. I absolutely love it. I have got a beautiful apartment. It is a ground floor one-bedroom, got my own little garden at the back and the front. I said to Robyne (Vickie’s Housing Worker), if I won one million dollars I’d probably give it all away because I wouldn’t want to move from here. Vickie wanted to share her story to show how much of an impact community housing has made on her life over the last nine years, and hopes there will be more homes built for those in need. 16.01.2022 CHL proudly supports NAIDOC Week 2020 celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This year’s NAIDOC Week 2020 theme: Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplo...mats, first astronomers and first artists. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies, they built and engineered structures - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek

13.01.2022 Tyrown Waigana, a Perth based artist and designer, has been named as this year’s winner of the prestigious National NAIDOC Poster Competition for his winning entry - Shape of Land. A proud Noongar and Saibai Islander, Waigana’s entry depicts the Rainbow Serpent coming out of the Dreamtime to create this country and how we are strongly connected to it. The Rainbow Serpent is represented by the snake and it forms the shape of Australia, which symbolises how it created our lan...ds. The colour from the Rainbow Serpent is reflected on to the figure to display our connection to the Rainbow Serpent, thus our connection to country. The overlapping colours on the outside is the Dreamtime. The figure inside the shape of Australia is a representation of Indigenous Australians showing that this country - since the dawn of time - always was, and always will be Aboriginal land, Mr Waigana added. #naidoc2020 #naidocweek
