23.01.2022 At Learn Play Grow Colyton Educators gave children a blank card, collage materials, pencils, stickers and glue for the children to create their own hand made card to give to their Dad or dad like person for Fathers Day. By giving children the opportunity to express themselves and have freedom to create it can help to develop their sense of belonging and establish trusting relationships. You can fold a piece of paper in half to make a card or even just give them a piece of paper and some pencils and ask them to draw a picture for Dad. By asking children to tell you about their drawing and if they would like to write a special message also encourages children to express their feelings and builds on communication skills.

22.01.2022 At our Learn Play Grow Colyton (held at Autumnleaf Neighbourhood Centre this week), Amanda set up a table top activity of some paints , paper and cotton tips for the children to use their imagination and creativity skills. The children can explore freely and demonstrate their fine motor skills by dipping the cotton tip in the paint and dabbing it on the paper. It also allows them to use their senses by feeling the paint or using their fingers/hands to paint as a way of play based learning. If you dont have cotton tips you could just use some sticks from the garden , pegs with cotton balls or straws, and if you dont have paint at home you could always try making your own by mixing a little flour, water and food colour together, that too could be a fun way to experiment with colours and talk about the different colours.

22.01.2022 Stop Elephant Stop

22.01.2022 At our Learn Play Grow group at Colyton, Educators set up the table with the tea set so that children could use their imagination and communication skills. You could always just use some old cups, plates, cutlery or sauce pans at home and let the children lead the imaginative play with their own ideas. It is a great way to build on childrens vocabulary and provides them with the opportunity to use play to explore and investigate.

21.01.2022 At our Learn Play and Grow Group at Werrington , children really enjoy painting and we added some cotton wool and pegs to explore different techniques. Using paint brushes and pegs with cotton wool improves their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Painting and creative play promotes social and emotional development while they are using their creativity and imagination.

20.01.2022 Boo to a Goose with Kelli

19.01.2022 Learn Play Grow Colyton (which was held at Autumn Leaf Neighbourhood Centre) Educator Amanda set up whiteboards, markers and shapes as a table top experience , the children can practice drawing different shapes and pictures onto the white boards and then rub off and start again. The children can also practice writing their name or using their imagination to try drawing diffferent things and to be able to mirror/copy the pictures that were placed on the table. You could also u...se a laminated sheet of white paper as a whiteboard and reuse it or, give the children some paper and coloured pencils/textas. If you dont have shapes you could always place some different coloured objects on the table for the children to draw on their paper and ask them to name the object/shape they are drawing and talk about the colours as this will help to develop their communication skills and use their fine motor muscles. 19.01.2022 Tummy time/Floor play Educators encourage babies to spend time on a mat on the floor, with an educator close by to offer comfort. This floor play time is important in developing babies gross motor movements. Tummy time also encourages baby to feel safe in the environment and lessen the need to be held all the time. This activity doesnt need to be filled with toys/objects, just needs space to be explored.

19.01.2022 Today at Learn Play Grow Colyton the children Participated in a science experiment by gathering different objects from around the yard and placing them in a tub of water. The children were asked before they placed their item in the water if they thought their object would sink or if it would float, this got the children thinking about density and buoyancy of an object. We talked about how buoyant objects float and dense objects sank. The children quickly realised that the rocks sank to the bottom and the leaves and sticks floated and were able to make predictions of what they thought their item would do before they placed it in the water and communicated their prediction to the educator.

19.01.2022 My Nanna is a Ninja

18.01.2022 At our Tresillian groups we used Baby Rattle Bottles. By using these bottles babies are encouraged to grip hold of the bottle, strengthening their grip on objects. They are also develop babys hearing and the ability to follow sounds. Playing with these bottles is also a great way to develop babys hand to eye co-ordination as they work out how to make the bottles roll/shake/stay still/etc. These bottles are just recycled water/coke bottles filled with some objects I had lying around home that were small enough to fit in. Pasta shapes make a great sound, but cotton wool would also work.

16.01.2022 Water Sensory Bottles By providing bottles filled with water and random objects, children will be encouraged to use larger muscle movements to push and roll the bottles along the floor. Educators can use these bottles to talk about what objects are inside and modelling language to the children. These bottles will also encourage the babies to use skills such as balance, position and movement while having fun pushing over them over and rolling them across the floor.

16.01.2022 We use collage regularly at our Outreach groups. By providing the children with paper, glue sticks and collage materials they will have the opportunity to use their imagination and create and construct a craft while engaging in a learning relationship. You can use all different kinds of art and craft materials that you have lying around the house such as ripped up coloured pieces of paper, patty pans, foil, scraps of material, old packaging , wrapping paper, magazines, children , while the children are creating their art works you can talk to them about what they are making as this not only helps with their creativity but also language skills.

14.01.2022 Baby Toys/Rattles By providing a bunch of baby toys (ie rattles, balls, toy phones, bead frames) in a safe area, babys will be encouraged to grab, roll, and manipulate the toys. This in turn will help develop their hand to eye co-ordination, as well as extend on growing gross motor skills (ie sitting alone, spending time on tummies). Babies are encouraged to feel the toys in their hands, and practise gripping the toys.

14.01.2022 At learn play Grow Colyton today the children used bubbles to practice their hand eye coordination skills and use their fine and gross motor muscle groups by trying to catch the bubbles in different ways. Educators encouraged the children to try and pop the bubbles with their pointer finger and also to catch the bubbles with their pointer and thumb or by jumping or stomping on the bubbles that landed on the ground.Bubbles are a great way to teach spatial awareness and visual... tracking skills. We used a battery operated bubble machine with a bubble mixture at our group but by allowing children at home to blow their own bubbles with a wand\stick has many benefits too. You can make your own bubble mix by adding 1 cup of water, 4 tablespoons of dishwashing liquid and 2 table spoons of light Karo syrup or glycerin. You cans make your own bubble wand with pipe cleaners, drinking straws or plastic bottles. See more

13.01.2022 It was our last Learn Play Grow group at Colyton for 2020 and the children celebrated by decorating baubles and making cards for some of their family members. We enjoyed a special morning tea together before reading a story and participating in some action songs which are a great way to incorporate learning gross and fine motor movement skills. We had a special guest (Santa) attend our last group for the year and bring the children a small gift. Wishing all of our families a safe and happy holidays and can’t wait to see you all in the new year.

13.01.2022 Hand Games/Singing By educators sitting next to babies and singing/playing with their hands, this helps to extend the babies hand to eye co-ordination. It will encourage the children to follow the movements and focus on the hands above them. This also promotes early language skills for the under 12 month olds. Try Twinkle, Twinkle, Open Shut Them

13.01.2022 Action/Movement Songs The baby’s in one of our groups have shown an interest in hand actions (ie clapping) and moving along to sounds. Based on this Educators will spend time singing songs like Twinkle, Twinkle, 5 cheeky monkeys, Head Shoulders Knees and Toes, etc, close to the children and encourage them to mimic the actions. This will help develop hand to eye co-ordination, and encourage balance while sitting up alone. It will also allow the educators a chance to celebrate the developmental achievements of these children.

13.01.2022 Today at our Learn Play and Grow group in Werrington we set up a Tool kit for the children to use their fine and gross motor skills while they are having fun. The children used the tools to fix the tables and chairs around the room. Pretend play encourages imagination, creativity and develops problem solving and social development.

13.01.2022 At learn Play Grow Colyton we had blocks out for the children for them to build their own constructions with . The children were able to manipulate , invent ,construct and take apart the blocks. They built tall towers and experimented in building / joining the blocks in different ways to try and make the tower as tall as they could which then got us talking about tall and short and having a discussion all about heights and measurements. You can use any kinds of blocks ie. lego, duplo , wooden blocks or even even empty cardboard boxes and let the children experiment with them to build/construct .

12.01.2022 At Learn Play and Grow group today, we set up a variety of musical instruments for the children to explore different sounds each instruments makes. Music and movement is a fun activity to promote fine and gross motor skills and improves mobility, memory and cognitive development. It is also a way for children to express their imagination and creativity through music and dancing.

07.01.2022 Soft Sensory Toys By providing children with soft sensory cars Educators will extend on already shown interest in moving toys. This activity will also provide the chance to continue supporting baby’s large motor skills by providing the chance to sit up unassisted. The cars have flaps to open, crinkle parts to press on, and wheels to roll, which will provide the opportunity for the children to explore their curiosity and practise new fine motor skills in a safe and supportive environment. This activity will also allow babies to interact with each other both verbally and non-verbally. You can purchase similar toys at the shops for your little ones to play with at home.

06.01.2022 Music Time By playing a mix of calming and playful/dancing music the children in our care can help feel safe, secure and supported by the Educators. Educators will respond sensitively to the young childrens cues and non-verbal signals to help build secure attachments. The music will also encourage the children to move their hands/bodies (dance) and experiment with movement to music. Music/songs can also be a great tool in expanding childrens vocabulary/beginning sounds.
