19.01.2022 Today our first group of Aboriginal Community Advocates had the pleasure to be involved in a full day workshop with Anglicare SA where they got to meet some amazing people and learn not only about what Anglicare SA can offer our Aboriginal Community in which we live and the program and support services they have to do this but to also be involved in helping Anglicare make some positive changes within their organisation to better service our community and discuss future job op...portunities that may be of interest for the Aboriginal Community Advocates. This is a very exciting space at the moment and to watch these ladies grow, become more confident, to be heard, to have a voice for their community and to give some very constructive criticism to a big Not-for-profit organisation is something special and Im very proud of each and everyone of these ladies and how far theyve come along this journey. Just want to thank Anglicare SA for this amazing opportunity for our Aboriginal Community Advocates. This is only the beginning See more

12.01.2022 When Korey Penny was released from prison, he was knocked back for more than 20 jobs because of his criminal record. The 31-year-old Noongar man, who served tim...e for drug offences, had almost lost hope and was considering turning back to drugs and jail. "It was like a cycle you get out, you look for a job, you go back in," he said. Then he found Ngalla Maya: Aboriginal Employment Access, a Perth-based organisation which helps Indigenous people find employment and training after being released from prison. The organisation guided Mr Penny to a construction job on the state governments $1.86 billion Forrestfield-Airport Link project. Mr Penny quickly worked his way up the ladder within a contracted company, and now works in a supervising role on the $20 million tunnel-boring machines. Now married with two children, a salary of close to $150,000 and his own home, Mr Penny said there was no way he would ever return to prison. "Ngalla Maya helped me break that cycle. I dont have to look over my shoulder anymore. "I have a job, a future, a house, kids, a wife. I dont even think about going back inside. "For that company to give me a go, a person of my background, and now Im running machinery like that, its pretty huge. "Every day I go to work proud." Employment and training schemes like the one which helped Mr Penny turn his life around could be key to reforming WAs prisons, according to a new report by conservative think tank the Institute of Public Affairs.
