25.01.2022 Mobility Scooter Trial One of our OTs is trialing these scooters for a home care client with decreased mobility. She no longer drives, so a scooter will allow her to mobilise independently to the local shops to do her groceries and attend to her doctor's appointments.... We schedule trials at the clients' homes or at the equipment provider's store, depending on the type of equipment required and the person's condition and mobility. #occupationaltherapy #ot #healthallied #assistiveequipment #assistivetechnology #wheelchair #scooter #agedcare #disability #disabilities #ndis #ndisprovider #mobility

This day is dedicated to raise global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Worldwide, fractures affect one in three women and one in five men over the age of 50. Osteoporosis is the underlying cause of broken bones known as fragility fractures.... 22.01.2022 October 24th commemorates the birth of Jonas Salk, the virologist and medical researcher who developed one of the first successful poliomyelitis vaccines. This day celebrates polio eradication in almost every country in the world, and highlights the remaining challenges to ensure that no child will ever again be paralyzed by any poliovirus anywhere. Australia recorded its highest peak of polio epidemic in 1938, affecting 39.1 per 100,000 population, and recorded its last epid...emic between 1961 and 1962. The last case was registered in 1972. Today, there are an estimated 400,000 polio survivors in Australia. Since there is no cure for polio, the focus of treatment is on improving functional capacity through exercise, pain management and preventing complications such as falls. 18.01.2022 An Occupational Therapist (OT) is qualified to work with people of all ages, from newborns through to older adults. Our OTs specialise in supporting people living with disabilities and older adults. Some key ways in which an OT can assist older adults are: Making the home environment safe and accessible Preventing falls... Learning new strategies to help with day to day activities Overcoming challenges Regaining skills Managing pain and fatigue Boosting confidence when a client's functionality is limited, focusing on what they CAN do rather than their dysfunctions and limitations Enhancing their independence, which is the OTs main goal #OTweek #thisisOT #OT #occupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapist #alliedhealth #OTaustralia #agedcare #eldercare #olderadults #seniors #homecare #residentialcare #myagedcare

18.01.2022 Regaining independence! This beach wheelchair trial was a total success! Peter is living with an incomplete spinal cord injury. He is still a very active person, and enjoys kayaking on the lake and going to the beach with his wife and three kids. The local surf club offers 2 beach wheelchairs with oversized wheels, but wide wheels means that he can't self propel - he needs to ask 3 or 4 random people to push him.... His main goal is to be able to go to the beach and move around independently We tried a Hippocampe Wheelchair, with double width wheels that are wide enough to ensure the chair doesn't sink in the sand, and that are narrow enough to allow Peter to self propel. Peter managed to access the beach on his own and move independently in the sand! Exiting was a bit harder due to the inclination and the soft sand, but Ellen was able to push him and pull him (as you can see on the pics), which means that in case of needing help, his wife or kids will be capable of doing so. Peter is more inclined to a self propelling chair because that is his way of exercising and staying fit. However, there are other power options that we will trial so he can decide which one is best for him. We will be showing you some footage of the trial tomorrow! Stay tuned!!! #occupationaltherapy #wheelchair #spinalcordinjury

17.01.2022 What do Occupational Therapists do? These pictures of Jess's last session with Jacob are a great example! Jacob was involved in a car accident which changed his life due to a brain injury. He was lacking motivation to get out of bed which is why our OTs have been working with him to boost his confidence, self-motivation and social participation. Jess has been supporting Jacob to safely increase his activity and independence by creating and following a daily routine, engaging ...in activities such as cooking, cleaning, doing the laundry, feeding the chickens and - Jacob's favorite - gardening. His veggie garden and his flowers are stunning! In Occupational Therapy, "occupation" refers to actions and everyday activities that people do. The main goal of out OTs is to encourage and enable people to do the activities they find meaningful. It is such a privilege to support people to improve the quality of their lives each and every day #ot #occupationaltherapy #otweek #ndis #ndisprovider #disability #agedcare

13.01.2022 Osteoporosis can be dangerous to live with given the constant and elevated risk of fracture. As we age, we lose bone structure, which makes our bones weaker and spongy. However, Osteoporosis affects different parts of the skeleton more such as the ribs, wrists, spine and the head of the femur (hips). Some things that people often don't know about Osteoporosis include:... early identification and treatment can make a huge difference it is possible to stimulate regeneration in the bones and reverse or manage the effects of osteoporosis with proper exercise the right kind of exercise is important you can boost your bone regeneration by increasing your calcium and vitamin D intake in your meals If you are living with Osteoporosis or know someone that is, you can reach out to us with any questions! According to the Arthritis Foundation, people with osteoarthritis experience 30% more falls than people who do not have arthritis, and people with OA are 20% more likely to break a bone than unaffected individuals. 09.01.2022 Peter's trial was a total success! His main goal was to be able to self propel on the sand, and his OT made it happen! Ellen also tried pushing and pulling the wheelchair on softer sand to see if Peter's wife would be able to do so in case he needs some help. This chair will allow Peter to enjoy time at the beach with his wife and 3 kids - it is so rewarding to know we can provide this kind of support! ... #occupationaltherapy #wheelchair #accesibility #assistiveequipment #disability #spinalcordinjury

06.01.2022 Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy are two different kinds of therapy which complement each other to assist people with movement and function. There are quite a lot of common areas of therapy and interventions that both professions deliver but also very distinct differences. An Occupational Therapist is highly skilled at helping people increase their independence in their life through therapy, prescription of equipment or modifications to an environment.... A Physiotherapist is highly skilled at helping people restore, maintain or optimise a person's mobility, function, and well-being. A Physiotherapist will focus on rehabilitation, exercise therapy, manual therapy, use of electrophysical agents, taping and adjunctive therapies to decrease pain and improve function. A broad and common saying is: a PT will help someone walk to the door; an OT will help them open the door. A more related example would be someone recovering after a stroke: a PT will help them improve muscle strength, balance and movement, while an OT will help the person with life skills (such as walking, eating or dressing independently) and with the prescription of home modifications or necessary equipment to assist them. An OT is also skilled in upper limb therapy and may assist someone living with a stroke to work on fine motor skills to regain hand and arm function. Most importantly, both professionals collaborate to work towards a person's common goals and focus on the area's of therapy that they are most skilled at for the person they are supporting. We treat a wide range of conditions - find out how OTs & PTs collaborate! https://www.communitytherapy.com.au/conditions/ #physio #physiotherapy #physicaltherapy #occupationaltherapy #OT #rehabilitation #healthallied #agedcare #disability #ndisprovider #homecare #residentialcare

03.01.2022 During OT Week, Occupational Therapy Australia celebrates and promotes the many ways in which Occupational Therapists help all people to reach their potential. There is a general misconception around the word "occupational", which actually refers to all actions a person may do. OTs focus on enabling people to participate in the everyday occupations of life, like cooking, cleaning, getting up out of bed, showering, etc. We asked our OT Team what being an Occupational Therapist... meant to them, and these are the words that came up. We are very proud of all the beautiful OTs that are part of our Dream Team; this week is for you! #OT #occupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapist #OTweek #thisisOT #alliedhealth #OTaustralia

01.01.2022 Choosing the right size sling is important not only for adequate functionality reasons, but also to ensure comfort, dignity and safety at all times. Factors to have in consideration include: The task and type of transfer The amount of support required... The environment The client - medical condition, functional ability, sitting ability, medical attachments, body shape, weight, height Equipment - compatibility with the lifter, carer's knowledge on how to apply the sling and safely operate the lifter This picture shows how a general purpose sling with head support should be measured. First, the sling must be positioned in the correct place - the u-shape part of the sling should be aligned to the sacrum/coccyx, and the line up the middle of the sling along the client’s spine. To measure height, the top edge of the sling should be lined up between the top of the ear and the top of the head To measure waist and shoulder size, the sling should be wrapped around the front of the client’s shoulder area and fall at the point where the shoulder meets the chest To measure thigh size, the leg straps should be placed around the sides of the client’s hips and legs and then under the thighs and cross the straps between each other. The material under the client’s thighs should be the padded portion of the sling (not the straps/loops). Weight load may vary according to manufacturer Every case and person is different, which is why assessments should be completed by an OT to ensure safety and comfort. We provide Manual Handling Training courses to carers and to staff of organizations we partner with. Follow the link to find out more about the course! https://www.communitytherapy.com.au/manual-handling-traini/ #occupationaltherapy #disability #disabilities #homecare #residentialcare #ndisprovider #alliedhealth #assistiveequipment #assistivetechnology
